Why Satellite?

Enable the Digital Economy

• Building a National Broadband Network

for ALL Australians

• Using a Multi Technology Mix (MTM) of

technologies to deliver broadband

Close the Digital Divide

• Satellite becomes a cost-effective choice

beyond the economical reach of other

technologies

• Uniform National Pricing to deliver LTS

services at subsidised prices.

“* We’re designing the NBN to provide these speeds to our wholesale customers, telephone and internet service providers. End user experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the NBN, depends on the technology over which services are

delivered to your premises and some factors outside our control like equipment quality, software, broadband plans and how the end user’s service provider designs its network.”

ISS Capacity Upgrades

Upgraded Capacity

• Satellite capacity upgraded

• Re-balanced network with ~1,200 end-user services re-pointed

Agreed New Fair Usage With RSPs

• New WBA & Fair Use rules to access to capacity

• New control mechanisms for breaches

Developed Tools to Monitor & Enforce Fair Usage

• New tools for RSP compliance with Fair Use,

along with end-user experience

• Work with RSPs to help them manage plans, customers and

network configuration – eg. 2% of users consume 20% of capacity

Launched NSS

• Launched to plan 1 August 2014

• Early pulse of customer experience highlighted some teething

issues but overall good satisfaction with the service

After

Space segment congestion largely eliminated

The Long Term Satellite (LTS) Program

The LTS is a large, complex program where NBN Co acts as the

integrator across multiple suppliers and specialist functions

Security & HSE

We have a $1.8 billion budget, 50,000 scheduled activities, hundreds of design

and specification documents, 1000 major dependencies and 3,000 people.

LTS: On track for success!

• NBN Co is on track to launch the product

late 2015 or early 2016

• Strategic Review recommendations on some

further risk mitigation also included in plans for

implementation

• The LTS network build continues to

track to budget

• There is no room for complacency:

Building and launching satellites, and the

space industry in general is a

RISKY BUSINESS!

LTS: Covering Australia….

Unprecedented High-Throughput

Satellite performance in the region

• Ka-Band

• 101 tailored spot beams

• Large geographical coverage

• Aggressive reuse of limited

RF spectrum

• Highly available solution design

• Two satellite system ~

Space Segment: Progressing Well

• Manufacture of the NBN 1A and 1B spacecraft is

progressing well.

• SS Loral manufacturing both satellites in US.

• Both satellites will be launched by Arianespace

in French Guiana.

• The thermal vacuum testing for NBN 1A has

recently been completed with favourable test

results.

• This is a major milestone for the space segment

of the program with the vibration dynamics,

acoustics and deployment tests remaining.

Ground Systems: Moving Ahead…..

• The first production versions of the modem are in being tested now in the

US with excellent results (BER, link performance etc).

• The first product launch ready version of the system software is currently

being testing in the Ground System Test Bed at the National Test Facility

• This represents the first ‘production ready’ version of the system software.

• Testing is underway at 9 of the 10 gateways.

The Reality: This is a huge project…..

Ariane-5

Launch VehicleNBN Co 1-A and 1B are two of the most advanced broadband

satellites ever designed – and are heavier than a bus!
