The Origins of THE National Society SAR

formation

The SAR traces its roots to the SoForns of Revolutionary Sires which formed in San Francisco to celebrate the centennial of the signing of our Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1876. On April 30,1889, the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was formed at Fraunces Tavern in New York.

chartering

The National Society was chartered by an act of the United States Congress on June 9, 1906. The Charter was signed by President Theodore Roosevelt who was an SAR member

The Charter authorized the granting of charters to societies of the various states and territories.

SAR Membership

SAR membership consists of 29,000 in 535 chapters in the United States. There are also societies in Mexico, Canada, France, Spain Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Membership has included 16 Presidents, Brigadier, Lieutenant and 5 –Star Generals, Ambassadors, Presidents of several colleges and Universities , members of the Supreme Court, U.S. Senate and Congress.

Historical Goals

We commemorate and provide memorials for the people and events of the American revolution.

We preserve records relating to the events leading up to and during the American Revolution.

We support research and presentations related to the history and people of the period 1750-1800.

We inspire the community with the principles on which our nation was founded.

We maintain institutions of American freedom and preserve US History.

We carry out the promises expressed in the preamble of the US Constitution.

We provide recognition for public service.

We honor, respect and support veterans.

Educational Goals

We sponsors essay and oration contests for high school students based upon historical and patriotic themes.

We distribute curriculum focused on the American Revolution.

We inform the community about events and the philosophical roots of the American Revolution.

We help people locate and evaluate genealogical records.

As a part of our educational outreach, the SAR conducts several programs across the country.

Some of our most active programs are targeted to our future leaders, our children, and those who are educators.

Outreach Programs

Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest The aim of this contest is to stimulate interest in

American History in support of the established school curriculum.

This contest is directed at students in the 3rd, 4th or 5th grades, depending on which year the American Revolution is taught in their educational system

The contest is also open to members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who are in the same grades but whose school system may not be participating in the contest.

Outreach programs

The Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest

The contest is designed to explore the influence of the Revolutionary War on present day America. Contest is open to all students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools who are in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior (grades 9 through 12) year of study.

Purpose Of The National Contest

To support historical research in our high schools by promoting oratorical presentations related to our Revolutionary War period 1750-1800.

To emphasize American History to the high school student and focus on and intelligent relationship between the past and the present.

To place a positive emphasis on the plans of our founding fathers.

SAR Outreach programs

The George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest

The George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest was originally established and named in honor of President Calvin Coolidge, who won a local SAR essay contest while a student at Amherst. The contest was reestablished in 1988 by Compatriot McCarthy DeMere. In 1995, the contest was renamed the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest in honor of their generous gift to the SAR to support this contest. The program is designed to give sophomore, junior and senior students an opportunity to explore events that shaped American history.

Conducted at the Chapter, State Society and National Society levels, the students must submit an original essay with topics based on original research and deal with an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence or the framing of the United States Constitution.

Outreach Programs

ROTC/JROTC Recognition Program

The SAR awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the "citizen-soldier", exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This award is presented by a Chapter, a State Society, or the National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing and general excellence.

Arthur M. & Berdena King Eagle Scout Scholarship

Open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of application. The year that Eagle was awarded is not restricted.

Three cash scholarship awards are given on the National level:First Place winner - $8,000.00Runner-up - $4,000.002nd runner-up - $2,000.00.

SAR Outreach ProgramsTom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award

The Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award winner will represent a teacher whose instruction on the Revolutionary War era from 1750 - 1800 demonstrates educational efforts in the classroom that exceed and excel above current, accepted, curriculum requirements.

Award Description:

The Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award winner will be able to choose a trip to one of the following seminars;

1) Freedoms Foundation Summer Teacher Graduate Workshop at Valley Forge, Pa.,

2) Colonial Williamsburg Summer Teacher Workshop in Williamsburg, Va.,

3) Jefferson Symposium at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., or

4) SAR Annual Conference on the American Revolution.

This award, valued at $1,400.00, will reimburse the winner for expenses including tuition, room and board, and transportation

NSSAR Partners in Patriotism Program

NSSAR Partners in Patriotism program is for the SAR to partner with any Veterans organization i.e. American Legion, VFW, AMVETS or one of the numerous others veterans groups in grave rededications, grave markings, parades, flag retirements or any program that the SAR conducts with the help from the Veterans or any Veterans organization that ask the SAR for help in conducting an event.

American Flag recognition Program

The American Flag is the living symbol of our national heritage reminding us of America’s greatness and our fortune to live in a country that values freedom. Our flag signifies the commitments of our fallen soldiers and all who served to bravely defend the honor of our country. The flag is our sacred emblem of American unity and purpose and exemplifies the commitment of our leaders to uphold the promise of liberty, justice and freedom for all.

NSSAR Color Guard

The NSSAR Color Guard is the most visible public face of the NSSAR. Color Guardsmen provide an easily identifiable and colorful focal point at parades and memorial events. The variety of uniforms and flags invite children, spectators, and potential members to come forward and ask questions about the American Revolution.

Patriot Grave identification and markers

One of the many activities of the Sons of the American Revolution is identifying and marking the grave sites of Revolutionary War Patriots.

Memorial wreath laying

SAR members honor those who fought for our freedom with memorial wreath laying ceremonies at Revolutionary War site anniversaries and dedications of Revolutionary War soldiers grave sites.

National headquarters

In 1979, the NSSAR moved its National headquarters from Washington DC to Louisville, Kentucky which houses the SAR National Museum Gallery and Genealogical Research Library.

The library collection has grown to 58,000 items and includes family histories, state genealogy materials, federal censuses, Revolutionary War pension applications, and CD collections. The primary focal point of the collections is the Revolutionary War period, but the collection does include other materials of a genealogical nature. The online catalog allows you to see what is available.

Children of the American Revolution

The National Society of the Children of the American Revolution is an organization for boys and girls through 21 years of age who are lineal descendants of a patriot of the American Revolution.

The C.A.R. is an independent organization which looks to the DAR and SAR for its leadership and financial support.

Children of the American Revolution

The N.S.C.A.R. has six primary objectives in its Bylaws; these objectives are the foundation of the organization:

1. To acquire knowledge of American History.

2. To preserve and restore places of Historical importance associated with men and women who forwarded American Independence.

3. To ascertain the deeds and honor the memories of the men, women and children who rendered service to the cause of the American Revolution.

4. To promote the celebration of patriotic anniversaries.

5. To honor and cherish the Flag of the United States of America above every other flag.

6. To love, uphold and extend the principles of American liberty and patriotism.

Daughters of the American revolution

DAR Founded: October 11, 1890 (16 months after the SAR)

Incorporated 1896 by an Act of Congress Objectives: Historic Preservation, Education,

Patriotism Motto: God, Home, and Country Membership: 170,000 members 3,000 chapters in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.;

International chapters in Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom

More than 890,000 women have joined the DAR since it was founded.

Eligibility for Membership: Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.

South Carolina Society

The South Carolina Society was organized April 18th, 1889 in a room at the State Capital in Columbia. The South Carolina Society began granting charters to chapters in 1923. Currently seventeen chapters promote the American spirit through fraternal meetings, commemorative observances of events and battles, educational materials, projects, lectures, tours and publications. South Carolina is rich in historical events of the American Revolution. From the mountains to the coast, South Carolina experienced the most battles and skirmishes of the war. The chapters of our society sponsor annual anniversary ceremonies of many of the battles and events. Since the organization of the South Carolina Society, over 3,000 have filled the membership ranks. The present membership is about 780 men.

South Carolina Society Annual Scholarship Award

The South Carolina Society SAR Scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior

at the society’s state convention. The scholarship is not awarded solely on academic achievement, but also on

demonstration of those characteristics that best reflect the principles and beliefs of the

SAR, such as character, good citizenship, patriotism, both school and non-school

related extracurricular activities, and well articulated, achievable goals.
