IntroductionFamous Quotation: "We must be the change we wish to see in the world."
Best known for: To 350,000,000 people Gandhi
was the Mahatma meaning "great soul." He
believed that peace and non-violence could be
more affective on change than weapons. Gandhi
helped India get independence from Great Britain
without a bloody war with change. Gandhi fought
for freedom because he didn't like the thought of
slavery and he thought that everyone should have
the same rights as others.3 Key Qualities:1. Demonstrated bravery2. Persevered3. Took action
What I find interesting: It's cool
that he helped 350,000,000
people overcome a very hardchallenge and lead India to
freedom with no harm.I chose this person because...He was a great leader and he
was a non-violent person, and
he persevered through hard
times.

Overcame a Hardship/Challenge
When Gandhi went to law school in
1889 he was very shy. There were
barely any vegetables, and he was the
only vegetarian at his school so
people would tease and taunt him. He
also wore different clothes from his
classmates. He was very smart but he
always walked around by himself.
Gandhi was also very careful with
money, goods and wealthy stuff.I think that even though life was
tough he studied hard and became alawyer. He was very shy because he
had never been to a country like
Britain before. Also he was a
vegetarian and in Britain they eat a lot
of meat.

Showed Compassion and Empathy
Gandhi returned to his country
determined to free his country of
British rule. He wanted to end his
caste system, which separated society
into different levels of rich to really
poor (the untouchables). He believedthat hurting can cause someone to
be just like that one. "Someday India
will be its own country with non-
violence and peace." Around 1915 he
was fasting for weeks. Gandhi was in
jail for 6 years and 6 months because
he believed that this should change. I think he did this because he wanted
India to be a free country with no
guns with no slaves and with love
peace and food and water for every
person in India.

Took Action
People of rich and wealthy
backgrounds and good living would
not be friends with the untouchables
and would not treat them the way
they should be treated. Gandhi stoodup and said it is wrong this way.
Gandhi decided to stand up and
protest to the laws of the England
rule. In 1942 participating in the
"Quit" India protest. I think India did this because theywanted to take over their country
and they wanted to be known as a
rich and wealthy country. At one
point Britain wanted to take over a
third of the world including India.

Persevered
Gandhi would not stop protesting the
only thing he wanted was freedom
with peace. He didn't care if it meant
breaking the law, going to jail or
fasting for weeks. Gandhi worshipedmillions of people. Then in 1947
Gandhi put up another protest.
England was done. Gandhi had done
it! In 1930 Gandhi started collecting
salt for his self which was against the
law. Gandhi always persevered in his
life especially in hard times.I think Gandhi thought that people
should be treated the same as other
people. He was a great role model for
other people and a great person
himself.

Impact: How Things are Different TodayGandhi continued to protest on
British control of India. Then in
1947 Britain said India could
rule itself. Gandhi's integrity
helped India become free.Gandhi went from an
untouchable to a priest and a
leader to South Africans and
Indians. Gandhi was a role
model for MLK in the U.S. and
Nelson Mandela in South Africa.Gandhi was good at getting
people to join his protests and
all that protesting led up to
what Gandhi wanted.

Demonstrated Bravery
On April 6, 1930 Gandhi bathed in the
sea water. Then he picked up a lump
of salt left on the shore. When he did
this he was breaking the law. Others
in the crowd started doing the same
thing. The law was that you're not
allowed to just take a free lump of salt
because in India salt was very
important and the British made them
pay for it. He did this because he
wanted to show that he was brave
and he didn't want the English to rule
India.I think this law was unfair because for
the poor people and some Indians
they didn't get the same laws as the
British.
