Flight Systems
• Maturing the JPL ION DTN implementation to common NASA-wide implementation• Include in Goddard core Flight Executive• Use common codebase across APL, Goddard, JPL, JSC
missions• More from Jane when she talks about the ION Working
Group
28 October 2009 SIS-DTN 3
Demonstration and Validation
• DTN supporting BioServe on ISS
• Operating 24x7
• Getting operational experience
• 2nd on-orbit DTN node due to become operational March 2010
• DTN Experimental Network (DEN)
• Multi-center testbed
• Supports experimentation and validation of new capabilities
- Performance in errored / delayed environment
- Bundle Authentication Blocks (hop-by-hop security)
• Operations Scenarios
- Lunar Habitat Scenario: Streaming video over DTN Tunnel (tested between
JPL and JSC)
28 October 2009 SIS-DTN 4
Demonstration and Validation
• DINET-I Flight Demonstration
• Report available
• DINET-II Flight Demonstration
• Operations in mid-November 2009
• CFDP / DTN / LTP implementation
• DTN capabilities in TDRSS
• DTN at TDRSS Ground Station
• DTN over LTP over Encap over AOS
• Planning demo at SpaceOps 2010

Protocol Engineering
• Network Management• Have been working ‘SMTP-like’ approach: local monitoring and control
coupled to DTN gateway for remote communications• Basic MIB under review
• Routing• Have been experimenting with Contact Graph Routing; used on DINET-I and
–II• Implemented in ION and soon in DTN2
• Security• Bundle Authentication Block implementation for ION, full Bundle Security
Protocol implementation for DTN-2
• Naming and Addressing• ‘ipn’ scheme consistent with compressed bundle header encoding• ipn://X.Y where X and Y are self-delimiting numerical values (auto-scaled
integers) for node number (interface) and service number (port)• Implemented in ION and soon in DTN2
28 October 2009 SIS-DTN 7
Specification and Standardization
• Green Book continually revised• Talk Thursday about additional requirements and operational
scenarios• Want to come to consensus on a schedule for completion
• Concept papers for protocol specifications distributed in July / August• Step 1: Slap a service specification on the existing
specifications• Step 2: Revise specifications / service specifications in
response to requirements, operational scenarios from October Green Book inputs
• Step 3: Testing and experimentation by agencies• Step 4: Submit for Red-1 Status
