WELCOME!We hope to make this an enjoyable and memorable gaming convention for all attendees. This booklet should contain the information you need, but if you have questions just ask at our Discord server, below.

WHAT IS MIDWEST GAMEFEST?Midwest GameFest is an annual game convention bringing a number of long standing midwestern game organizations under one roof. The Role-players Guild of Kansas City (Shauncon), Heart of America Historical Miniatures Gaming Society (Borderwars), and Gamer’s Haven Game Library have banded together to bring you role-playing games, historical miniatures, board games, card games, organized play, cosplay, workshops, game designers, dealers, benefit events, a used game sale and more!

WHERE IS IT?Normally, we call Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center in Independence, Missouri our home (we are part of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area). But in the world of COVID-19 we are hosting the event online via Discord (a free text, audio, and video service) and Mozilla Hubs (a free web-based VR platform). You don’t need anything more than the cell phone, tablet, or the web browser you’re using right now. The two systems work in concert with some things in Discord, and others in Hubs. There’s nothing to download or hook up, but a mic and headset would be great. VR headsets are supported but not required. We use a number of online virtual tabletops (VTTs) including Roll20, Tabletop Simulator, and more (game hosts decide).

You don’t need anything more than the cell phone, tablet, or the web browser you’re using right now. There’s nothing to download or hook up, but a mic and headset would be great. VR headsets are supported but not required.

Talk to exhibitors in the Exhibitor Hall. Goof off in the Fun Room. Watch movies in the Theater. Visit and bid in the Art Show hosted by Dorky Dino Gift Shop. And so much more.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR YOU?

HOW TO GET IN

Goof Off

In the Fun Room you can post links, share screens, draw, fly, and use the Magic Wand to drop in objects and scenes. Go nuts!

Step 1: Lobby

Click the link. Once in the lobby, click the Enter Room button, or Enter on Standalone VR if you have a VR headset.

Step 2: Device Selection

Next, click the Enter on Screen button, or Connected VR Headset if you have a VR headset.

Step 3: Test Audio

Choose your mic and test that you can hear and be heard. Then click Enter Room.

Step 4: You’re There!

That’s it! Use the WASD keys to move, or on mobile click and hold. Problems? Reload the page or check your mic.

COSPLAY POLICYCosplay is highly encouraged at Midwest GameFest, and there are just a few rules we ask our attendees to follow.

COSPLAYERS• No real weapons of any kind will be allowed in the facility.

All costume-related items will be inspected at the registration desk each time you are admitted. Weapons are required to be replica or prop by design and should not have the appearance of a real blade or firearm. If our desk folks can’t easily tell the difference at a glance, it’s not allowed. No illegal or functioning weapons are permitted.

• Airsoft/paintball and similar weapons must be unloaded, not charged with air/gas, and rendered inoperable.

• No projectiles.• No partial or full nudity.• No pyrotechnics, smoke, fog, fire, fireworks, explosions,

concussions, etc.• No dripping or oozing of fluids, confetti, or glitter which could

create an unsafe walking surface.

NON-COSPLAYERS• Cosplay is not consent. Be considerate. Please ask for

photographs and respect those instances when a cosplayer may be otherwise engaged.

• Please do not touch a costume unless given express permission by the costume wearer.

• No harassment of any kind will be tolerated. Not only will reports of harassment result in immediate expulsion from the convention, but Midwest GameFest will take all appropriate measures up to and including contacting the authorities.

• Check our Harassment Policy for additional details.

COSPLAY RULES• No extreme gore. Remember, this is a family convention and

anything considered inappropriate will be asked to change or leave.

• No nudity or partial nudity allowed. All cosplays must cover more than a swimsuit, regardless of gender.

• Shoes must be worn at all times.• If you can’t fit through a doorway you cannot wear it. You cannot

be blocking people’s paths in the hallways.• All props have to go through weapons check.

PROP RULES• All props must go through weapons check.• You will be required to tag your prop. You can receive tags at

weapons check.• No real weapons. No steel/real swords; or shaped metal

objects.• No real firearms. Fake Guns must have something identifying

them clearly as facsimile so that those with no gun knowledge clearly know it’s not a threat. We highly recommend an orange tip of some kind.

• If it is a Nerf gun you cannot have any “bullets” in it, or on you.• Props must be able to fit through doorways and can not block

people in the halls. Large costume pieces must be removable in order to walk through halls (e.g. wings, spikes, tails, chains, props).

ERIK CARLMetagamers Anonymous Podcast

A consummate gamer and gaming overachiever, Erik strives to assuage his ego by doing everything he can to associate himself with social gaming in the Midwest. Erik is the principle administrator of the Prismatic Tsunami community for tabletop gaming enthusiasts and the producer and host of the Metagamers Anonymous RPG podcast. In his spare time, he moonlights as a budding novelist and a blues musician with a closetful of CDs he may try to sell you. For the past six years, he’s also been running TsunamiCon, Wichita’s premiere tabletop gaming convention.

Erik has been intimately involved with the tabletop RPG hobby since his first taste of D&D at the tender age of 8. By the time he was 12, he was running games for entire groups of adults, and he has run at least one weekly game almost every week since. Moving from one small Kansas town to another throughout his teenage years, Erik took it upon himself to spread his love of the hobby to numerous folks of all ages and from every walk of life. He graduated from Dodge City High School in 1992 and soon entered the field of radio broadcasting. It was only natural that he would one day combine his hobby with his professional experience and launch a game-related podcast.

Erik now lives in Wichita, Kansas, with his wife and two children. He is an accomplished musician, a renaissance enthusiast, a writer, podcaster, and game designer. He started the Prismatic Tsunami web community in 2003 to help connect the community of gamers he’d been playing with over the years, and launched Metagamers Anonymous in 2012 to give a voice to that community. He has extensive experience with every iteration of Dungeons & Dragons, and has enjoyed numerous roleplaying experiences with White Wolf’s Old World of Darkness, Champions, Rifts, D20 Modern, Star Wars, Call

of Cthulu, Wheel of Time, and more recently the Cypher System and Savage Worlds.

Jonikka started playing AD&D (1E) with Erik back in high school and went on to dabble in several other game systems over the intervening years. She is a consummate roleplayer, a writer and photographer, a Renaissance enthusiast, a fan of anime and Japanese culture, an accountant by day and a tea vendor by night. Other than roleplaying, her passions include video games, sewing, and Asian ball-jointed dolls (look it up! it’s a fascinating hobby!). She has always had a penchant for helping others enjoy her passions, so joining Metagamers Anonymous was just another opportunity to indulge in one of her favorite pasttimes. Her current system of choice is D&D 5e, though she has recently begun experimenting with Savage Worlds. Oh… and she plays a mean game of Parcheesi.

Jonikka currently resides in the City of Wichita with her husband and two kids, one of whom has reached her majority and become a passionate roleplayer and excellent GM in her own right.

Erik’s most recent projects include his dark fantasy novel, Shadow of the Spire, and his zombie-themed card game Zero Signal: Supply Run.

DOES MIDWEST GAMEFEST BENEFIT A CHARITY?Midwest GameFest is not a charity itself, and neither is its parent organization the Role-players Guild of Kansas City. However, we have historically provided a charity raffle benefitting Harvesters Community Food Network, a large community food bank in the Kansas City region. You can learn more about this at our Benefit Raffle page. Additionally, separate groups at Midwest GameFest have historically gathered donations for their own charity causes, such as Heroes of Rokugan’s annual Toys for Tots drive.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?Essentially just shoot us an email at [email protected] with your contact information and what you might want to do. See below for additional info:

Gaming Groups – We will have a table for flyers and other promotional information for area gaming clubs and conventions. Groups that are interested in greater participation should send us a message with details. Volunteer discounts are a great opportunity for your group or club. This year Midwest GameFest is partnering with Meeple-A-Thon, a charity benefitting Hillcrest Platte County’s Young Adult Housing Program. Each year Meeple-A-Thon plays tabletop hobby games to bring in thousands of dollars to help displaced youth in the area. It’s a great cause, and they’ve got a full slate of fun events to both participate in and watch live on Twitch. Check out our special Meeple-A-Thon event schedule for details on events, and our streaming schedule for details on live streams. And help make the world just a little bit brighter for someone by donating to Meeple-A-Thon this year.

USING THE MEEPLE TO HELP HOMELESS PEOPLEMeeple-A-Thon is a 24 hour board game event that raises money for the homeless youth in Kansas City. We do this by partnering with Hillcrest Platte County, their Young Adult Housing Program, and YOU! This platform gives gamers a chance to make a difference in their community while gaming with friends, family, and local gaming guilds.

This year, we are proud to partner with Midwest Game Fest for this event! COVID-19 has effected all of us and we are excited to work with Midwest in 2020 to continue growing and supporting our cause.

Meeple-A-Thon 2020 will be our 4th annual event, and we could not be more excited! Since our kick off event in 2017, Meeple-A-Thon has grown exponentially into a community of board gamers eager to make a difference in the lives of the homeless and insecurely housed youth right here in Kansas City.
