Following the huge success and popularity of Phil Cunningham's Christmas Songbook show over the last 7 years in Edinburgh, Phil is calling his pals together and touring his Christmas songbook, visiting Aberdeen, Glenrothes, Perth, Glasgow and of course Edinburgh. Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson, John McCusker and Phil, will lead you through a great fun night of modern and traditional Christmas music. Featuring Kris Drever, Ian Carr and Kevin McGuire along with a special guest Brass Band.

Oil your vocal chords and bring the family! What can you say about Phil Cunningham, a superb innovative instrumentalist, with not simply the fastest fingers in the West but some of the most sensitive ones, too! The man who, in Scotland at least, made the accordion respectable again and also plays fine keyboard and whistle. Where Phil Cunningham is now is just about everywhere. He has recently completed Secret Scots, a series of radio interviews with world-famous names who have Scottish roots including the business icon Steve Forbes and, somewhat more surprisingly, General John de Chastelain. To witness Phil Cunningham along with some of the finest musicians on the Scottish folk scene get yourself along to one of the tour dates near you. 15 December: Aberdeen Music Hall www.aberdeenperformingarts.com

When we came up with the idea of the forthcoming photography exhibition at the Eden court, it seemed to make sense that we launch a competition to acknowledge the huge amount of amateur photographers in the Inverness music scene. However we could not have anticipated the interest and the variety of material submitted to the Inverness Gigs team. The final decision did come down to the wire with four very strong shortlisted photographers. Those who made it to the shortlist were; Gillian Simpson, Ross Elder, Andy Mackenzie and Alan Cruickshank. The competition was indeed fierce but we are delighted to announce Ross Elder as the winner. One of our judges Brian Vass remarked; “Technically well executed, stylish images with interesting processing”, MUSIC NEWS Scotland's Alastair Cunningham, another member of the judging panel, added “work brilliantly and love the colour contrasts”. When we informed Ross, who also plays for band ROADWAY, he said “I do love working on the stage performing music but it is equally as fun off stage capturing all of the action that you can see. I am very delighted to win this competition as I actually have not gained a lot of experience in this line of work but I do wish to do more of it.” Ross will have his photographs displayed at the forthcoming Inverness Gigs exhibition at Eden Court as well as having a pass to take photographs at Belladrum 2014. Chris Lemon, competition organiser, commented “I would like to thank

everybody involved in running this competition , from Belladrum for donating the prize to the three judges who have had an amazingly difficult decision to make. Most of all I would like to thank all of the competition entrants who by using their time to photograph local musicians and events are helping to promote the vibrancy of the local scene”. If you are interested in gaining skills and confidence in gig photography you may wish to consider contributing to Inverness Gigs - you can contact the team at [email protected] The Inverness Gigs photography exhibition will be held at Eden Court Theatre from Sunday 26 January 2014 to Sunday 23 February 2014. Further details and updates can be found at the Inverness Gigs Photography Facebook page below.

Started in October 2013,

Edinburgh's Folk Rag

Records isn't your average record label.

Its run by artists for

artists and is already

brewing up quite a stir.

They understand the difficulties for emerging acts to break through into the limelight and provide a stepping stone to help them reach their goals. Folk Rag Records not only manage, but also offer promotion and recording facilities, aiming to provide everything artists need, whether its a studio to record their album or just a hug to get them through a hard day. The label are dedicated to their artists, they are friends, they are family but most of all, they are a collective". Folk Rag Records is extremely happy to announce two recent signings with Georgia

Gordon and Chris Yendell joining the label. Georgia Gordon is a wonderful singer-songwriter with a huge future ahead of her. She was recently a finalist in Forth 1's One to Watch competition and has previously performed at Celtic Connections. As well as having played at various festivals during the summer, Georgia has somehow found time to record her debut EP which Folk Rag Records will be releasing with her early 2014. Chris Yendell is a hugely talented singer-songwriter from Edinburgh. Now living in the 'big city' of London he has been performing regularly and is building a solid reputation as a fantastic performer. Chris has already written and recorded his debut EP 'In a Nutshell', which is available in various outlets. The EP gives a sense of the amazing musicality that Chris possesses. Folk Rag Records are really looking forward to releasing his debut album in 2014. Also signed to Folk Rag Records is Calum Baird, a brilliant singer-songwriter with a Dylan-esque feel to his music - but with a much better voice! www.facebook.com/CBairdMusic www.facebook.com/georgiakate16 www.facebook.com/chrisyendell

There's many mini-speakers on the market these days all pitching for your hard earned cash, and making wonderful claims of what they'll sound like when plugged into your ipod, smartphone or whatever other portable music hardware that probably goes everywhere with you now.

We've tried a few mini-speakers over the years at MUSIC NEWS Scotland and most serve a purpose but have had some type of drawback, however these Music Angel Friendz speakers definitely tick all the boxes. We've had them on long-term test for the last six months, after being impressed initially, to make sure the quality and battery life weren't short-lived. And we've not been let down - build-quality, sound, volume and battery life are all superb and we're delighted to give them our top '5 Stars' review score.

Music Angel Friendz is the brain-child of Baard Johannessen, a Norwegian biologist who came up with the idea of Music Angel Friendz whilst travelling and wanting to have a miniature speaker that could be used either on its own or as part of a set.

Product details: The new Music Angel Friendz is a compact stereo loudspeaker with a built in digital amplifier and rechargeable battery with over 120 hours of playback time. Finished in aluminium, the Music Angel Friendz comes in a choice of nine stylish colours, sound quality that belies its compact size and can be daisy-chained together for increased sound volume. Compatible with all smart phones, tablets and laptops, the Music Angel Friendz audio connection is via its 3.5mm stereo headphone socket. For charging, users can connect via its mini-USB socket to any PC / MAC and all standard USB chargers, where a single charge of three hours will give 120 hours of playback. For higher volume levels, Music Angel Friendz can be daisy-chained together using the supplied cables and soft feet positioned on the underside allows the user to place the speaker on any surface without causing damage. Available in black, blue, silver, green, pink, orange, red, lime or purple.

Technical specifications: Output power: RMS 6W (3W+3W) THD=10% / Frequency response: 150-18000HZ (±3dB) / Magnetic resistance: 4Ω / Power supply: Micro USB USB – 5V DC 350mA / Speaker dimension: 75 x 50 x 52mm / Weight: 150 gram

Friendz are available in Carphone Warehouse, Tesco, O2 stores and independent retailers at £30.

The Scottish music scene has reacted in horror to the news that The Picture House in Edinburgh has been sold to JD Wetherspoon and will no longer be a music venue under current plans by the pub chain. Callum Mouat who works in The Picture House, and is the drummer with The Winter Tradition, immediately started a petition calling for live music to be retained. The petition in only a few days has attracted over 11 000 signatures and overwhelming support from musicians. The petitions message is simple: "JD Wetherspoons: Stop your plans to turn The Picture House into a non live music venue. Keep Edinburgh's music scene alive and well." Calum said: "As both a musician and a member of bar staff, I am devastated to hear that my beloved place of employment and a key music venue in Edinburgh city centre has been sold of to become a Wetherspoons. I refuse to stand by and watch decades of live music history be tarnished all in the name of a burger and a pint for £6! The Picture House has a musical history stretching back three decades and has brought the best international acts to the Scottish capital with acts as diverse as Franz Ferdinand to Amadou and Mariam having graced its stage. More recently, big names such as Panic! At The Disco, Deaf Havana, Frightened Rabbit, Basement Jaxx, The Editors, Sleeping With Sirens and Amy MacDonald have all performed to over 1000 music fans." The Picture House, in the Capital's Lothian Road, during the seventies and eighties was known as The Caley Palais and hosted gigs by some of the biggest name artists of its generation including New Order, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Orange Juice, Queen and AC/DC. With no live music in any Wetherspoon pubs it seems unlikely that they will willingly give in easily to the campaign but with enough pressure who knows what can be achieved. A JD Wetherspoon spokesperson has said: "However, we are always prepared to listen to the arguments and to discuss it further". One possible avenue to apply pressure could be through a 'change of use' planning application to the City of Edinburgh Council and MUSIC NEWS Scotland will bring you details on this as soon as they are made public. A motion of support has also been lodged in the Scottish Parliament which urges JD Wetherspoon to preserve the place of live music in its plans for the Picture House, this has been supported by 21 MSP's.

Billy Liar : EP : All I've Got release date - out now : www.facebook.com/official.billy.liar

Billy Liar is an acoustic folk-punk singer/songwriter from Edinburgh, Scotland. Armed with trusty chords and lyrics that reveal an old soul, Billy Liar has been making the rounds throughout the UK and Europe for over five years, bashing out singalong anthems and bitter ballads in equal measure.

Not one to be confined by genre, Billy's sound draws from a wide range of influences, extending far beyond modern punk or the '77 sound. He fuses the traditional balladry of his native Scotland to punk urgency to create undeniably energetic music that's worth a second listen once you pick up the lyric sheet.

As word of Billy's rousing performances spread across the UK, he has been a mainstay of Rebellion Festival and Book Yer Ane Fest, plus has delivered raucous sets at Wickerman, Strummer of Love, Eden Festival, Nice n Sleazy and Strummercamp. On tours of the UK and Europe, he's accompanied Franz Nicolay (The Hold Steady/Against Me!), TV Smith (The Adverts), Oi Polloi, Lach, Thomas Truax, Dear Landlord, Beans on Toast, Kevin Seconds (7 Seconds), Star Fucking Hipsters, Sorry and the Sinatras, amongst others.

So far in 2013, Liar released a sold-out EP entitled 'The Ghosts Of Punk Rock', and was invited to play The Fest in Gainesville, Florida. The Fest appearance coincided with his first American tour, a fiveweek trek in support of the release of his new 'All I've Got' EP. Of the EP's title track, Subba-Cultcha says, 'This is a song that deserves to be heard by everyone for no other reason than that they’d really like it if they did … the most buoyantly catchy song Billy Liar has ever written.'

PAUL ANDERSON Land of the Standing Stones Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now Paul Anderson, from the heart of rural Aberdeenshire, is one of Scotland’s most respected traditional musicians.Land of the Standing Stones is really a love letter to Paul’s native Aberdeenshire as all but a couple of the 51 tunes on the album are inspired by the people, landscape and history of the North-East of Scotland. The music on the album has all been composed by Paul himself and at 70 minutes in length, it’s a considerable achievement. The music, though rooted in the traditional Scots fiddle idiom, is also contemporary in style. He has been ably supported in this by a superb group of musicians, which includes Shona Donaldson (Scots singer of the year 2009), Swedish citern genius Ale Carr, Ali Napier (Dougie MacLean band) and Scottish acting star Kevin McKidd on guitar and vocals.

Button Up single : download Release Date: 1 December

The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Heidi is touring the UK in November ande December with multi instrumentalist/Producer John McCusker and Irish Guitarist and singer John Doyle.

MICK WEST & MULDOON'S PICNIC A Scots Chorus Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Scots Chorus is a joint venture between veteran Scots singer Mick West and the fantastic a cappella group Muldoon's Picnic. In mid 2012, West and Muldoon's started exploring the different harmonic possibilities of a body of the most interesting and representative Scots chorus songs they could find and, having decided that some of these songs would benefit from instrumental arrangements too, asked well known arrangers Frank McLaughlin and Stewart Hardy to arrange, manage and perform on the project. It is hoped that the CD and booklet will not only be enjoyable in their own right, but also provide a portal for those who wish to explore the great Scots song repertoire further, and be a motivation and inspiration for all singers and musicians to take this materiel and develop to use it to make their own music. CEILIDHCATU NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. MARCH Wee Dub Festival Edinburgh March 7-9 The 2014 edition of Wee Dub Festival is by far the best line-up yet, featuring giants of UK dancehall culture, top live bands, and hot upcoming talent. For the artist line-up and programme go to the website below. Tickets are now on sale for all 5 sessions, as well as Earlybird Weekend tickets and Wee Dub Mega Tickets, which get you into both the festival and Wee Dub Hogmanay for a healthy discount. We look forward to welcoming you to another weekend of roots,

culture and good vibes in Edinburgh in March 2014. www.weedubfestival.co.uk Niel Gow Scottish Fiddle Festival Dunkeld & Birnam March 21-23 The 2014 Niel Gow Festival will be held in the beautiful Perthshire village of Dunkeld & Birnam, home of Niel Gow. The annual festival was established in 2004 to celebrate the life and music of Perthshire's fiddle legend. It is envisaged that through time the festival and other activities will gather enough funds to erect a fitting memorial to Niel Gow in Dunkeld & Birnam. Niel Gow (not Neil Gow) was born in Strathbraan on 22nd March 1727 and grew up in the village of Inver, by Dunkeld. www.niel-gow.co.uk Northern Nashville Country Music Festival Caithness 18-20 April In 2004 we took a gamble and ran our first ever Northern Nashville Caithness Country Music Festival (NNCCMF), which thankfully was a great success. Over the years it has gone from strength to strength, with country music fans converging on Caithness over Easter Weekend to be part of this 3-day 5-show extravaganza of live country music. This is truly an international event featuring top class acts from the USA, Canada, Europe, Ireland and the U.K. alongside our wealth of local talent and youth bands. www.nncmc.co.uk
