“Still Cant Beleive This!”

An evening with the latest band on the Alternative scene

It’s a cold December evening, I’m waiting backstage at Birmingham Academy, shortly after Decades have finished their homecoming gig , the last of their UK tour.

Birmingham lads Decades, are the latest band to come out of the Alternative scene, claiming to have drawn influences from bands such as Interpol and Joy Division, with dark, delaying sounds, and massive soundscapes created by the wizardry of Alex Hughes’s guitar genius, and the powerful dark vocals from front man Matt Millard. This dark feel runs deep into the young bands sound, with tracks such as vultures, with catchy distorted bass riffs, and vocal melody lines.

The band enters the room that I’ve been waiting in for the past 30 minutes. First to enter is Sam (drummer), covered in sweat, baring a towel, the rest of the band shortly follows, dressed from head to toe in black, escorted by a full manage-ment team. The lad’s greet me and i sit down with Alex to start the interview.

“you guys although not in the mainstream of alternative music, have been round for quite a while?”

Alex- “Yeah we started up when we were school kids, must have only been like 13

couple of line up changes along the way, but mostly stayed the same, the last year has been crazy for us though, its what we always used to talk about, just glad people are enjoying our music”

“How did things start out for you lads then?”

Alex- Well, we have been friends since school at an early age, we started playing at bars and clubs round Birmingham when we were still kids (chuckles to himself) we would be like the youngest guys there and we’d be in the band! We were lucky enough to get on some good club nights, with great bands such as tantrums. This helped us out loads , love those guys. Really started the ball rolling for us.

“How have things changed now you’ve re-leased your debut single “Age like wine”?

Alex- It hasn’t stopped for us. It really hasn’t. It’s been incredible. Playing venues I could have only dreamed of playing when we were younger. And coming back to Birmingham tonight has been incredible. Our fans are so loyal to us and without them we would be no-where. I can’t think of anything better than playing in front of your home crowd of thousands of people.

“So what are the plans for decades in the near future? Alex- well we are getting straight back into the studio in a couple of months time to start work on the second album. We have a few ideas float-ing around from our tour, so hopefully shouldn’t be too long until you hear the next release from us guys!

“there’s alot of talk of you guys having a new sound on the new album. How much of this is true?”

Alex- Some ... there will still be elements of the last album, but we’ve been toying with the idea of adding more synths to the sound, this might be a new element that will be included on the new album. We’ve also been talking with Manchester Orchestra to help us out, but I’m not giving any more away, you’ll have to wait and see.”

“Well Thank you Alex, you guys have been an inspiration to many. Hope the new album works as well as the last one.”

Decades should be releasing their new album which is yet to be titled in late 2010, Also check out the festivals in the summer as it is rumoured that Decades will be making an appearance at most.
