visual Style/influences• From looking at the videos he has directed he always seems so use a

Hollywood style of bright colours and settings. The clothes and make up used always look perfect, as though their not real. He seems to use setting that look rich and flawless. Amazing green grass and beautiful flowers always seem to appear out side the houses like those of wisteria lane (desperate housewives). He uses a high contrast on all the images to make each colour standout. The common influences there seems to be is the use of high contrast throughout all his videos. He also uses the theory of Goodwin, such as:

• Relationships between the lyrics and visual (he always uses a strong narrative)

• Relationship between music and visual ( the visual stays in time with the music)

• Particular genres of music have their own style( he stays with the artists styles)

• Closeups of main artists• Star iconography• Voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of women•

Background history- Biography• Dave Meyers has photographed and directed hundreds of music videos and commercials.• Born and raised in Berkeley, California, Dave developed his love for film while working for a small local

Landmark cinema at the age of 17. He attended Loyola Marymount University where he majored in Film Production and Philosophy.

• After graduating, Dave programmed the inaugural slate of the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. He also produced Copper Women, a short film that was the culmination of Project: Involve, an IFP/West program designed to introduce ethnically diverse women into the film industry. The following year, Dave worked in development for Paramount Pictures on the films Face/Off and Twilight.

• Inspired by a chance meeting with director Gus Van Sant, Dave spent the next 10 years directing music videos for over 200 of the music industry's best and brightest with the unique crossover ability to working with Jay Z one week, Britney Spears the next, and Aerosmith the week after that. With each new video, Dave seeks to innovate the field while supporting artists in the journey to define themselves. That work ethic has brought a slew of nominations and 11 MTV Video Music Awards, the most recent of which was for Pink's "Stupid Girls". Dave was a principal force in the creation of @radical.music, the music video division of the world renown commercial production company @Radical.media.

• Next, Dave tackled the world of commercials exploding into the scene with his iPod "silhouettes" campaign and has expanded his body of work to include notable work for HP, NIKE, ESPN, AT&T, THE NFL, amongst others. His work has already brought him several awards, including a Clio, a Golden Lion, and an Art Director award.

• In 2007, Dave directed his first film, The Hitcher, released through Rogue/Universal Studios and produced by Michael Bay. Dave is currently developing his next feature effort, with hopes that his self-written partially autobiographical screenplay entitled, "Free Wooly" will be the one.

Why?• The reason I like Dave as a director is because of his style. I

love the highly saturated colour palette he uses and the sleek editing he includes. He also does a lot of work with my favorite artist ‘Pink’. I like the videos he does with her as he shows a very strong, clear narrative whilst also get across Pinks sense of humor.

This is a shot of Pink from the video of ‘So What’ Directed my Dave. She riding a lawn mower down a main road in L.A. They closed of one lane of the road and only had time to do one take. The car behind her are actors shouting angrily at her. The angry traffic beside her is real. By chance this added a great effect to the narrative.

These are shots from the video ‘stupid girls’. This show the sense of humour they get across, but it also show a clear narrative of girls needing to change their attitudes.

These pictures are (top) of dave and pink, and (bottom) Pink and the crew. This shows the close bond they all share and therefore makes me think that dave most be a lovely guy to work with as will as having brilliant directing skills

This is a picture from the video’ please don’t leave’ This video is very crude and slightly creepy but by doing this it makes the meaning of song strong and the narrative very clear.

Artist and band

Dave works with a variety of different artists over the years, from Jay-Z’s to Dido. He has a rapport with the artists

and regularly collaborates with Pink and Missy Elliott.

He has worked on 11 of Pink videos, by watching them you can see a link with

the particular style he uses. You can see this from these screen grabs And the collage a created. All of them are very bright and expensive looking. Even the dark shot of Jay-Z’s video has a bright

sky.

Live performances and narrative elements

• Dave does not tend to use a lot of live performances in his work as he prefers to stay to a strong narrative. He uses the lyrics to start with, gets idea’s from the artists of how they see the narrative and then creates that into strong narrative videos whilst keeping a glamorous style what ever the subject. The main video I has noticed including a performance is slipknots ‘left behind’. He films the band performing in a woods with a creepy atmosphere. This genre of music is not one he usually works with, the genre tends to have live performances with in the videos which is why this is the main video in which Dave includes a performance.

He makes sure the narrative always comes across clearly by some times exaggerating what is happening. He also uses amazing set and props to make sure the story is overly realistic.

Editing style• Dave’s editing style tends to a medium speed of cuts. He uses lots

of different scene’s within each video and keeps a nice pace by cutting to a different shot, roughly, every 4 seconds. He keeps bright colours throughout. Even when working on a dark video with slipknot he dressed them in bright red jumpsuits. He uses a range of shots including long shots, but he tends to focus on close-ups or medium close-ups. He always uses a style so suit the performers. He cuts in time with the music to keep the narrative going. He doesn’t tend to use loads of effects, he mainly does clean cuts into the next shot.
