    What is Video?

Video is the technology of electronically capturing,

recording, processing, storing, transmitting, andreconstructing a sequence of still images representing

    scenes in motion.

A file comprising a collection of related

information organized in a manner that enablesoperations such as searching and sorting the data

    is called DATABASE.

So a collection of videos and related things is

    called Video Database.

    History

Video technology was first developed for cathode

    ray tube (CRT) television systems.

In 1951 the first video tape recorder captured live

images from television cameras by converting the

camera's electrical impulses and saving the

information onto magnetic video tape. But several new technologies for video display

    devices have since been invented.

    Multimedia Data

There are four major types of multimedia data:

    Text

    Images

    Video Sequences Sound Tracks

A video is a combination of all multimedia formats

hence, video database is a collection of these

    multimedia data.

    Content-based Image Retrieval

Image retrieval has received a lot of attention in the

last decade (CV and DBs). The main techniques

can be extended and applied also for videoretrieval.

Images were traditionally managed by first

annotating their contents and then using text-

    retrieval techniques to index them.

Frame rate, the number of still pictures per unit oftime of video, ranges from six or eight frames persecond (frame/s) for old mechanical cameras to120 or more frames per second for new

professional cameras. PAL (Europe, Asia, Australia, etc.) and SECAM

(France, Russia, parts of Africa etc.) standardsspecify 25 frame/s, whileNTSC(USA, Canada,Japan, etc.) specifies 29.97 frame/s.

The minimum frame rate to achieve the illusion ofa moving image is about fifteen frames persecond.

    Video Standards

Video compression standards attempt tocompress videos by performing an intra-frame

    analysis

Each frame is divided into blocks. Comparedifferent frames to see which data is redundant inthe two frames

    Drop redundant data to compress

Compression standards: MPEG - 1,2,3,4,Cinepak, JPEG video

    Latest Video Format- HD

Image has higher resolution than previous video

forms, All major hardware manufacturers and

software developers have agreed upon for the

future of film, TV, video and broadcasting.

Existing Standard Definition (SD) for PAL- 720 x

    576For NTSC- 720 x 480

    For HD-1280 X 720 / 1920 x 1080.

The quality is three times the size of SD.

    Video Database

    Management System(VDBMS)

    15/26

    What is VDBMS

    VDBMS means Video Database Management

    System.

A Video database management system is a

framework that manages different types of datapotentially represented in a wide diversity of

formats on a wide array of media sources

    Primary Goal Of VDBMS

The primary goal of a Video Database

Management System (VDBMS) is to provide

pseudo-random access to sequential video data.

This goal is normally achieved by dividing a video

clip into segments, indexing these segments, and

representing the indexes in a way that allows easybrowsing and retrieval.

Therefore, it can be said that a VDBMS is basically

a database of indexes (pointers) to a video

    recording

    Components Of VDBMS

Digitization and compression:hardware andsoftware necessary to convert the videoinformation into digital compressed format.

    Cataloguing:process of extracting meaningful

story units from the raw video data and buildingthe corresponding indexes

Query / search engine: responsible for searching

the database according to the parameters providedby the user.

    Visual summaries: representation of video

contents in a concise , typically hierarchical, way.

Indexes: pointers to video segments or story units.

User interface: friendly, visually rich interface

that allows the user to interactively query the

database, browse the results, and view the selectedvideo clips.

Videos do not require any particular language tocommunicate with the viewer.

The video may be a silent movie, silent tutorial or class.

    Search engines- Language dependent.

    Video databases- Language Independent.

Follow steps shown- Learn/ Solve a problem.

    Practical approach to the problem.

    Actual steps of solving.

Eg- Group 9 presented a video tutorial of the VirtualDJsoftware, similarly millions of videos are availableonline.

In the future with growth of internet the demand for goodvideo database managers would increase and demand forsites like Youtube is ought to increase.

    Award winning movie database program.

Stores information about movies - title (both original andadopted for foreign movies), director, year of release, actors, genre, description, type of storage media (VHS, DVD, AVIfile, etc.) and so on.

Data import from internet movie databases, Simply enter thename of the movie and the rest is done automatically.

Capture movie screens for DVDs and AVI files and attachthem to the database.

In addition, the program comes with password-protection

options to prevent unauthorized access. Finds videos on request.
