Business Issue: A small market research firm was having problems processing reports efficiently and began missing client deliverables. Furthermore, with so much time focused on report generation, time spent analyzing and strategizing results were being greatly minimized. In the end, not only were reports being delivered late, but they did not meet the standards of the firm.

? Process Analysis: Upon review, it was determined that the firm was being held up significantly by their current back-end processing techniques. Data tabulations were being provided in Word, and in turn data had to be hand-entered into PowerPoint slides and tables. Each number had to be checked individually as the margin of error during this form of report population was high. Moreover, tabs did not include statistical significance testing and testing was being conducted manually.

MRS’ Process Solution: MRS completely overhauled the back-end processing for this firm. Tables were now developed in Excel, and significance testing was embedded into tabs. This gave the client the accessibility to copy and paste, and even manipulate the output if needed. Furthermore, a report automation tool was brought in to streamline report generation. By having the ability to link tables in Excel to objects in PowerPoint (e.g., charts and tables) via report automation software, weeks were shaved off of project timelines while the report quality increased substantially.

Business Issue: A market research firm was spending an exorbitant amount of money outsourcing Advanced Analytics to an external statistician. With the majority of studies requiring these types of analyses, the firm needed a more cost effective solution and needed it quickly.

? Process Analysis: Upon review, it was determined that the firm was partnering with a high-end statistician to provide a fairly remedial advanced analytics service in the form of perceptual mapping and key driver analysis. On some studies, the final bill was approaching $10,000 in fees.

MRS’ Process Solution: In the short-term, MRS provided these analytic outputs at a fraction of the cost. In most cases, the generation of these outputs would only take a day or two of professional time ($1,000 to $2,000). Eventually this task was brought in-house as a junior project manager was trained by MRS as part of an all inclusive SPSS training program.

Business Issue: A pharmaceutical market research firm specializing in qualitative research was looking to expand their quantitative capabilities. Having partnered with MRS for the past two years to provide backend DP and reporting solutions, more quantitative studies were coming down the pipeline quickly. Unfortunately, the internal front-end tasks related to questionnaire design and programming had some serious deficiencies which needed to be addressed.

? Process Analysis: Being a strategic partner of this firm, MRS was well aware of the deficiencies in place as a handful of studies had programming issues which lead to respondent re-contacts and additional data processing time. Ultimately, the project staff was lacking experience in quantitative research as a whole and needed help and direction.

MRS’ Process Solution: As a first-step, MRS identified these front-end deficiencies and put together a quantitative process flow which identified the tasks and sub-tasks associated with each phase of the quantitative project life-cycle. The next step (which MRS is currently is the process of incorporating) is identifying who internally and externally will be responsible for performing each task. Once identified, MRS will train project staff on these pertinent tasks to ensure future quantitative research flows seamless from project inception through to final deliverable.

Biography

Matt Sperling, President

Matt formed Market Research Solutions, LLC in 2007 and brings extensive experience working with internal and external client teams to assess, design, and implement quantitative market research across various industries. Since forming MRS, Matt and his organization primarily partner with research and consulting firms to execute research for industry-leading clients in the areas of pharmaceuticals, communications, and sport & sponsorship.

From a research design standpoint, Matt has experience across a multitude of quantitative research methodologies including brand tracking, choice analysis and decision modeling, market landscaping, pricing optimization, and messaging & positioning research. Matt primarily executes research in the U.S. and Canadian markets, but also provides significant global experience and has worked directly with various EU clients. Areas of expertise and proven research skills include research design and strategic analysis, survey programming and hosting, data processing and Advanced Analytic techniques. Matt also provides consulting services to other research firms by developing optimal processes for increased operational efficiency. Consulting areas of expertise include process analysis, design, and implementation in small to mid-sized market research organizations.

Prior to starting his own company, Matt headed the Quantitative Operations Group for Genactis Inc. There he was primarily responsible for executing quantitative research for major pharmaceutical industry clients. Matt has previously held positions at TNS Intersearch where he managed and directed the accounts of ESPN Sports Poll subscribers and at Charlton Research, a company specializing in sport, sponsorship and branding.
