students from the country for its Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programmes.

I am glad to know that the M.Phil batch of 2007-09 of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is bringing out a campus placement brochure. M.Phil programme of the department is an interdisciplinary

programme consisting of postgraduate students from various disciplines. This course offers vast academic exposure to interdisciplinary studies on Planning and Development and facilitates the students with a creative and

pragmatic approach to research problems and contemporary development and policy issues.

Wish you all the best

Indian Institute of Technology (IITB) is celebrating its Golden Jubilee. It is a matter of great pride for the IIT Bombay family that today we are recognized as one of the

leading institutions in the world. I am happy to mention that the Institute, over these years, has continued to attract high quality faculty from across the globe and the best

Message from the Head of the Department

Department of Humanities and Social SciencesIndian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Powai, Mumbai-400076

Its give me immense pleasure in writing this message for the placement brochure for the 2007-09 batch of M. Phil students in Planning and Development.

Like all post graduate programmes at the IIT Bombay, students admitted to the M. Phil programme have to face a

rigorous selection procedure. As can be seen from the placement brochure they come from a wide range of socialscience backgrounds with a common commitment to serve society. At IIT Bombay, the interdisciplinary M. Phil programme in Planning an Development offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

provides them both a theoretical and practical thrust to develop a holistic perspective of socio-economic reality. The programme introduces them to the various stages and levels of expertise involved in the formation and

implementation of policies of sustainable development.

Their training in the two year programme includes a rigorous course work,

field visit, R&D project, seminar presentation and dissertation work. I am confident that with the training they receive at IIT Bombay, they develop the competence to contribute to the national, state and regional development

process. They are adept at both quantitative and qualitative modes of data analysis. They are trained to formulate and implement projects independently.Besides academics, IIT Bombay provides opportunities to students to

develop their personality to their fullest potential. The breath of talents is here and I invite recruiters to tap it.

The M.Phil. Programme

Department of Humanities and Social SciencesIndian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Powai, Mumbai-400076

l

The two year M.Phil. course with specialization in Planning and Development admits students with post graduate degrees from various disciplines of Social Sciences and Pure Sciences. The students have to qualify the MET (M.Phil. Entrance Test ) written examination followed by an interview.

The first year comprises of extensive course work, seminar, R&D project and field work in the area of developmental studies. This is followed by a one year of dissertation (submitted in 3 stages) with an interdi sciplinary approach. This course offers greater intellectual exposure to other disciplines and facilitates a creative and pragmatic approach to research problems and contemporary issues.

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences came into being in 1958. The importance of this department in a technology institute arises from the fact that the receiver of the technology is the society in which we live. Knowledge remains incomplete without having looked at the arena of humanities and social sciences. Hence a complete science and technology education must include liberal arts, economics, social and behavioral sciences where the students unite application of scientific princ iples along with human, moral and social understanding,

The department offers PhD programmes in the disciplines of Economics, English, Philosophy, Sociology, Sanskrit and Indian Astronomy and Psychology. The M.Phil course in Planning and Development started in 1993 to enable research scholars to develop acumen for the micro and macro dimensions of policies and planning.

Theoretical Foundation

Seminar and R and D

Department of Humanities and Social SciencesIndian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Powai, Mumbai-400076

The theory classes lay a strong base which

helps in understanding development issues and critically appraising the same. The major thrust is its applicability in the field.

For seminar, the students are encouraged to work on the topic other than their area of specialization.

R&D is a semester project. It is a preparatory stage for the dissertation in terms of exploring areas of interest, using research methodology and enhancing report writing skills.

On the whole they develop further acumen for the research

process.

It is a one year intensive research work undertaken by the students in their area of interest. Themes are generally chosen in line with contemporary issues in developmental sectors. This foster linkages between academia and social concerns.

The M.Phil. program at IITB has a mandatory field visit requirement in the first semester for the duration of one week. This is designed to provide an exposure to the field. In the recent years students have carried out impact assessment of various projects.

An ardent thinker and a passionate learner is what I would like to describe myself. Myself lies in my ‘thinking out of box approach’ which is evident in the entire projects that I have undertaken so far. Quantity does not fascinate me as much as quality and this explains the reason for Qualitative approach in my research studies. Though I would like to work out of things in an independent manner, I would much more love to be a part of a team. I believe that the enhancements of my learning and success grows parallel to the development of the organization I work for.

Nexus between Fiscal Policy and Monetary policy in India with special reference to Pension Schemes

With globalization, it is not possible to keep interest rate at levels different from those prevailing in the rest of the world. In this view, various saving schemes promoted by the government, such as pension schemes, provident fund schemes and other small saving schemes are likely to increase government indebtedness which have consequences for the conduct of monetary policies and inflation etc. Which empirical evidence it will be clearer that how far this nexus exists and what could be proper policy implic ation for the government and the central bank.

: Inflation Targeting Versus Monetary Targeting: A Critical Apprisal of Indian Economy

The transition of the Indian economy from a nearly closed and administered economy to a liberal economy requires restructuring and inventing policies that best function in the economy.
