NUT SHELL
• Did you ever wonder why the percentage of overweight children has doubled since 1989 Fifteen percent of the children between the ages of 12 to 19 are now overweight in our country
• In order to reduce that percentage, children need to educate themselves by understanding the importance of good nutrition, exercise and being aware of lifestyle choices that can lead to obesity.
• Children need the encouragement of others around them to make the right lifestyle choices.
NUT SHELL
• Did you ever wonder what goes on inside the body of an overweight person? When food enters the stomach, it triggers receptors to alert the brain to induce a feeling of fullness. Fat triggers this sensation and also the receptors in the mouth and brain that urge people to gulp down food before they feel too full
When this balance is upset, obesity may occur. Slow eating allows for less food being swallowed, and therefore less fat cells are formed. When a person starts losing weight, the cells decrease in size but the number of fat cells generally stays the same. This presents a real problem.
NUT SHELL
• As a result of inactivity and eating larger and more fatty meals,
• the obesity rate in America continues to climb. Nationally, more than 50% of kids are considered overweight and 30% are considered obese.
• Currently, the number of obese children is at an all-time high. The percentage of children who are defined as overweight have more than doubled since the early 1970s.
• An estimated 15% of children ages 6-19 are overweight
• Obesity already accounts for 5% of health expenditures around the world, so imagine what health expenditures will be like in 20 years.
• To decrease these percentages and health risks, we need to educate adults and teens as to what needs to be done to reduce the rate of obesity.
• We need to understand how lifestyle choices and food choices affect us.
