“A daily routine embeded in imagination. - Concealed Situation On waking up in the morning, we have experienced familiar landscapes routinely. Whether we like or dislike, our thoughts have been ac- cumulated through the daily experiences However, you’ve ever experienced that the affair of fixed routine transformed itself into a totally different and strange landscape. Just like sometimes feeling awkward in hearing your own name. Though that is a trivial routine such as trees or grass, With primitive observation and suspicion, I’d like to read out a novel context against the identity of the dai- ly routine embeded in its own circle and assign virgin- ity to the routine just like being faced with everything first ,which is the artist’s imagination, speaking to daily routine and opportunity to expand the meaning of the matter and reality and to acquire freedom. Artist Statment by Sun, Jong-Sun Jeoung Gil-Chae experimented on the possibility of communicating artistic thoughts on the mechanism of the authority and violence immanent in the con- temporary daily life while identifying the position, as a symbolic sign, of the material property or shape of the materials used for his formative works such as objet installation in the early years of his career. His explora- tion method using symbolic signs and interest in the structure of society has continued, while focusing on flat format works such as painting and Printmaking in a new work environment since his movement to New York. The works created in this period, which might seem to have some features of abstract painting, can- not be simply explained as an experiment of a form of abstract flat painting although they featured simplified lines and color planes. Considering that shapes are used as symbolic signs, which worked as an allegory constantly liking to his personal experiences, those ab- stract images can be considered as a result of symbolic transformation and arrangement. This creation method was changed again due to the oc- currence of several incidents he personally experienced, resulting in the further modification of the way to ex- press his interest in social matters. Such change began from his uncommon experiences when he was living in New York; he witnessed the 9.11 incident under his very nose and was badly injured while he was working. He said that during this period he not only felt an extreme anxiety but also realized an existential fact that he was alone and his attitude towards his creation was gradually shifted from the previous view focusing on the structural issues of the society to a view that allowed him to see his body and mind and his relationship with society from the more existence-oriented perspective. The change in his view on the world, which had begun from his past expe- rience of such incidents, has fundamentally contributed to the changes in his works; since this period, the direc- tion of his interest expressed in his works has turned to how to secure and recover the balance between oneself and others and between different beings from bringing up issues on social matters. As a result of that, his works have advanced one step further achieving works with healing aesthetics that incorporate symbolic features closely related to his own experiences, communicate and converse rather than revealing his ideological thoughts. 03 2013 Vol. 42 l lery in June1980, participating in The Times Square Show, with art ists such as Jenny Holzer, Keith Haring, and Kiki Smith.
