You’re expecting a baby.But you’re about to receive a miracle.

Before You Leave.

A s every mother discovers and continually rediscovers- having a child is a joy that

lasts a lifetime. So it’s important that before you check out of the hospital, you take care of several items that will affect your baby throughout his or her life.

Birth Announcement Announce your new born baby to the community by filling out the announcement form in your welcome packet. The announcement will appear in the newspaper you have chosen when space is available.

Birth CertificateState law requires that a Certificate of Live Birth be filed with the State prior to leaving the hospital. This form will include the baby’s first and last names. Both the baby’s birth certificate and the baby’s official footprint sheet must be signed by you. Also, one of the baby’s bracelets must be retained by the hospital for its records. Please read the enclosed Birth Certificate Worksheet carefully.

Social Security CardApplication for a Social Security Card for your baby can be completed during your hospital stay. The card will then be mailed to you after the baby’s birth certificate has been filed (approximately 3 months).

Infant ScreeningTo ensure your baby gets off to a strong start in life, we conduct a thorough assessment of your baby’s health, including eyesight, hearing, reflexes and other vital functions through a series of screenings. We’ll also provide you with verbal and written instructions for caring for yourself and your newborn once you go home. You may call our staff 24-hours-a-day, if you have any questions after you leave the facility.

Infant PhotographyDuring your stay, you will receive a free photo session for you and your newborn. A photographer from Mom365 will come to your hospital room and take the portraits. Because HIPAA prevents us from distributing your baby’s information including names, dates and photographs, Mom 365 will provide you with a password so that your friends and family can view and order prints of their own. The Mom365 baby portrait page lets family and friends meet your baby online. Visit mom365.com/prenatal to register or text “PRENATAL” to 89183 for more information.

Car SeatBy law, all children, under the age of four, including your newborn infant, when traveling by vehicle, must be securely fastened into a car seat. Many area fire stations will assist you and check if your seat is properly installed.

Discharge Instructions SheetPrior to your departure from the hospital, we want to make sure you feel comfortable in caring for your newborn child. Our nursing staff will demonstrate basic care techniques to assist you and answer any questions you may have. Please address any concerns before you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Who can stay with me in the Obstetrics Triage room? One visitor may stay with the patient in the private Obstetrics Triage room. Because of the sensitive nature of this service, no children will be permitted in the assessment room at any time. Pregnant women 20 weeks and beyond will be assessed and cared for at our Bayfront Baby Place. Women experiencing concerns who are 20 weeks or less should go to Bayfront Health’s Emergency Department for immediate triage care.

Who can be with me for the delivery? As long as your labor is proceeding without complications, and with your doctor’s permission, you may have three adults with you in the labor and delivery suite. Other visitors can wait comfortably in our family waiting room. In extreme circumstances, children may be allowed in the room. Please talk to your nurse to make special accommodations.

Who can be with me if, and when I get an epidural? At the time of your epidural, your nurse will be with you to provide comfort and assistance. For your safety, the anesthesia staff requires that only the nurse offer you assistance.

Will I be allowed to videotape or photograph the delivery? We know this is an important moment worth remembering. We ask that you obtain permission from the nursing staff prior to any photography. We also ask that video and photographs take place five minutes after the APGAR is conducted on the baby.

How long can I expect to stay after my delivery? For a vaginal birth, the stay is typically 24-48 hours. For a C-section, the stay is two to four days.

What procedures can I expect to be done on my baby?Upon delivery, infants are identified with ID bands that match the bracelets given to mom and significant other. Babies are also foot printed and security tags are placed on their ankle. All babies receive a vitamin K shot to assist blood clotting, eye ointment to prevent complications from possible STD, and are tested for PKU. Our thorough assessment also includes tests for sickle cell anemia, hearing, vision and other vital functions.

You'll have plenty of questions. Here are some answers to a few.
