India is one of the few countries with long days and plenty of sunshine, especially in the Thar Desert region. Abundant solar energy available, is suitable for harnessing solar energy for a number of applications.

The western states of the country are naturally gifted with high solar incidence.

In areas with similar intensity of solar radiation, solar energy could be easily harnessed. Solar thermal energy is being used in India for heating water for both industrial and domestic purposes.

India is among top 5 destinations worldwide for solar energy development as per Ernst & Young’s renewable energy attractiveness index.

India has a great potential to generate electricity from solar energy and the Country is on course to emerge as a solar energy hub.

Most parts of India have 300 - 330 sunny days in a year, which is equivalent to over 5000 trillion kWh per year - more than India’s total energy consumption per

year.

India needs to make renewable energy evacuation a high transmission priority—as high a priority as village electrification. This is especially true for large-scale renewable energy plants. Dedicated funding should be allocated as part of existing programs, such as the government’s rural electrification initiative.

India's power generation grew by 5.2 from 73.3 billion units in December 2011 to 77.1 billion units in December 2012.

The Future of Solar Energy in IndiaBy 2050, Solar energy alone will produce 1.3 times the current energy production of the country.

By 2020, there will be cost parity between solar energy and conventional grid power, This initiative will far exceed India's plans for nuclear power generation and dwarf current solar energy leaders in domestic market size and export manufacturing.

Renewable energy ranks bottom of the total production just before the Nuclear energy. The distribution of energy resource like hydro power is skewed towards North-eastern states of the country as 70 % of the total hydro potential is located in the Northern and North-eastern region.


Why Solar in India ?

Solar is the most secure of all energy sources, since it is abundantly available in India. With crippling electricity shortages, the price of electricity traded internally touched Rs. 7 a unit for base loads and Rs. 8.50 during peak periods.The 12th Plan envisages 29,800 megawatts (MW) in capacity addition through renewable sources. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, launched in 2010, anticipates that grid parity will be achieved by 2022 and parity with coal-based thermal power by 2030.

The lack of access to energy is a key challenge in India’s growth story, with approximately 400 million people having no access to electricity and another 400 million having limited access. Solar energy, with its inherent applicability of being modular and environment friendly, can help in transforming the lives of millions.

India’s per capita consumption is one of the lowest in the world.

The Integrated Energy Policy Report, 2006, estimates that India will need to increase primary energy supply by three to four times and electricity generation by five to six times to meet the lifeline per capita consumption needs of its citizens and to sustain a 8 percent growth rate.

To increase per capita consumption to 1,000 kWh by 2012. This translates into a required generation capacity of 800GW compared to 160GW today.
