Spirit of Curling

In the BeginningCurling began centuries ago in Scotland where it was played on frozen rivers and streamsby people seeking not just competition, but the friendship and camaraderie that comeswith a team sport. By the mid-1800s, cold winters and the popularity of the game drovecurling indoors and necessitated a uniform set of rules.

In the late 1700s, Scottish immigrants introduced curling to Canada. In 1832,Scottish farmers, immigrating by boat to Chicago, were shipwrecked on the shore ofLake St. Clair and decided to stay there. They formed the first U.S. curling club, shap-ing blocks of hickory to use as “stones.” Other clubs followed, formed primarily bypeople seeking sport and friendship in areas where lives were shaped by harsh winters.

The first curling club in Chicago was formed in 1854. The first U.S. curlingchampionship was held in 1957 when winners from ten state competitions met onthe ice at Chicago Stadium.

Olympic FameCurling gained Olympic status with the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan. The 2002 games in Salt Lake City gave greatimpetus to the sport, and many United States curling clubs have grown substantially since then.

Today there are some 20,000 registered curlers in the United States. More than a million participate in the game in35 countries, with 90 percent of these in Canada, where curling continues as a major national pastime.

“The Roaring Game”Curling is a game of finesse, strategy, talent, and etiquette that is played on a sheet of ice, 146' long and 14-15' wide. Two teams of four players each try to get as many “stones” as possible closest to the center of a horizontal bull’s eye, or“house.” The leader of each team, called a “skip,” stands in the house and calls the game; all players take turns deliveringa 44-pound honed granite stone with a handle on top. While one person calls the game and one delivers the stone, theother two members of the team, equipped with special brooms, travel alongside the stone and help determine its speedand path by sweeping the ice in front of it to reduce the friction of the moving stone.

As the stone turns and moves down the ice, it makes a grumbling sound, and from this has come the nickname, “theroaring game.”

Page 23: Mixed Nationals Program

History of Chicago Curling Club

The Chicago Curling Club, organized in 1948, is a mem-

bership organization centered around curling. The Club is

recognized as one of the finest curling facilities of its size,

with four sheets of ice, locker rooms, a fully equipped

kitchen, a dining area, and a large social area.

Curling at the Chicago Curling Club encourages skill

development for novice, intermediate, and advanced

curlers. There are women’s, men’s, mixed, senior, junior,

and open events. Generally an event includes one game

per week for a set number of weeks. Many events are offered throughout the curling sea-

son; in fact, full members of the Club can curl almost every day or evening. Curlers can

also participate in “bonspiels,” multi-game tournaments held throughout a curling season

by all curling clubs, including Chicago.

It isn’t just the sport that makes curling attractive. After a game, curlers engage in

the traditional “broomstacking,” a period for socializing with teammates and opponents.

Beyond broomstacking, curlers at Chicago enjoy parties throughout the year, including a

summer Cornspiel, golf outing, and the traditional celebrations marking the opening and

closing of the curling season.

The curling season begins in November and ends in March, about the time that

curlers are hoping to see those first flowers spring from the thawing soil!

As with all sports, it’s the players that make the game, and the members of the

Chicago Curling Club have created a warm and welcoming place where you can enjoy a

competitive sport and make and expand friendships.
