Missions Conference Notes

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord.

Always be preparedto give an answer

to everyone who asks you to give the reason

for the hope that you have.

But do this with gentleness and respect.

As we look to what God will do in the future, we pause to give thanks for what He has done in the past. We are grateful for the leadership of four members of Westwood (Joe and Sarah Ford, Vance Rutan, and Rick Kennedy) who accepted the responsibility to organize our first World Missions Conference, which was held in April, 2006.

Dr. Frank Barker, pastor emeritus of the Briarwood Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, AL, came to challenge us to be more intentional in engag-ing the world for Christ. Our collective response was, and continues to be, an overwhelming “Yes!” Since that time, we have established an an-nual missions conference, developed a missions manual, established long-term relationships with missionaries in South America, Europe, and Asia, and provided more than $500,000 in direct monetary support to missionaries and missions agencies (this is in addition to our support for our denomination’s missions agencies—Mission to the World and Mis-sion to North America).

This year’s theme is based on 1 Peter 3:15,

Notice that the key to our “answer” is “setting apart Christ as Lord.” We have hope because of the salvation we have received through faith in Jesus. We share with others out of the overflow of our salvation and in light of their desperate need to call on the Lord for salvation. It is our desire that those around us today, and the next generation to come, will look at us and find our example of persistent prayer, sacrificial giving, and faithful going to be a source of hope, joy and encouragement.

As we welcome our missionaries and keynote speaker, the Reverend Al Baker, we look forward to hearing more about how God is working across the street and around the world. And as we do, our prayer is that we will embrace the challenge to pray, give, and go—for the glory of Jesus Christ and the advance of His Kingdom. To that end, let each of us prayerfully ask, “What steps will I take by faith?”

Grace and peace, Pastor David

Al Baker is ordained in the Presbyterian Church of America and has been in the gospel ministry for over thirty-five years. He graduated from the University of Alabama, Birmingham in 1974 and received his M.Div degree in 1981 at Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi.

Last year Al began serving full-time as an Evangelist with Presbyterian Evangelistic Fellowship (PEF) in Bristol, Virginia. Prior to this, he split his time between being an Evangelist with PEF and serving as President of the Alabama Church Planting Network (ACPN).

Rev. Baker was the organizing pastor of Christ Community Presbyterian Church, West Hartford, Connecticut. He served there for nine years. Prior to that calling, he was the pastor for ten years of Golden Isles Presbyterian Church, St. Simons Island, Georgia.

During his career, Al has been actively involved in foreign missions, travel-ing to Central America, South America, Africa, India, Great Britain, Europe, Japan, and Indonesia. He is currently spear-heading a 10-year effort to plant 100 churches in India through evangelism and leadership development. He has also traveled extensively around the United States preaching in churches and in the streets. He is the author of three books— ,

, and .

Al’s passion is to promote a revival culture in churches. He leads revival prayer weekends and preaches on revival and evangelistic themes at Bible conferences. He is working to raise up the next generation of revival and evangelistic preachers akin to the great 18th century Presbyterian preacher from Richmond, Virginia, Samuel Davies. To that end, Rev. Baker has helped establish the Samuel Davies Conference on Evangelism, which meets every year at the Bancroft Bible Camp, Kingsport, TN. The next conference is August 16-19, 2017.

Al and his wife, Wini reside in Birmingham. They have been married for over forty-one years and have three grown sons, three daughter-in-laws, and ten grandchildren.

Westwood partners with Rebuilding Hope Ministries in their effort to use mercy ministry to share the love of Christ. We also support Grace PCA’s outreach efforts by conducting a Backyard Bible Club. Westwood holds fundraisers each year to help defray the cost of meals, transportation, and housing for anyone who wishes to participate in the annual trip. A signup sheet is available at the church.

“Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:21. We use Faith-Promise giving, not as a

gimmick, but as a means to foster a heart-attitude toward Kingdom work. Our Faith-Promise giving is above our tithes. By faith, we give as God provides.

The WMT provides the vision and leadership for our world missions work and needs your support. Please join us as a regular team member or an active participant!

Join Westwood this summer during the week of June 19-22 to help build wheelchair ramps for folks in the Dothan area. Signup sheets are available at the church. A great opportunity for fellowship and serving others!

Join us as we take surveys in specified neighborhoods and invite folks to come learn more about Jesus. Dates to be determined.

Westwood regularly hosts a book table at Wallace College to provide reading materials and gospel tracts on a variety of life issues, and to engage with students about spiritual matters. Materials are free of charge to students.

The Davilas are an international family. Rodney, a Costa Rican met Jana, an American, who was studying Spanish

while preparing to serve in Ecuador. Their two children are true third culture kids. Both were born in Bogotá during their first missionary assignment with MTW. The family served in Chile for over 10 years and have been in Costa Rica since 2010.

In 2009, MTW entered a partnership with (ICRICEN) to serve and empower the vision for a Reformed church-planting movement in Costa Rica and throughout Central America. This became a unique opportunity for the Davilas to use their 20+ years of experience.

ICRICEN, located in San Jose, has three existing church plants. Ongoing mentoring groups and mobile seminary classes train leaders and future pastors for the growing needs of this church-planting movement. The training in Christian counseling addresses the church's emotional needs as it faces family trauma. Another new area of future ministry as the national church becomes self sustaining will be community development.

This ministry provides numerous opportunities for service. Contact them individually or through the church to see how you can help!

The public schools of Dothan open their doors to volunteers who share the history of Christmas and Easter from the Bible. Scripts and training are available.

Jennifer Boykins founded 2:20 Ministries out of a love for women and girls and a desire to restore Biblical Womanhood to current and future generations. She and five ministry leaders strive to impact the lives of young girls and women in ways that will ultimately strengthen families and change communities.

Based on Galatians 2:20, this ministry is rooted in and young girls

and women through faith-based initiatives. It provides resources and a "safe place" where girls (ages 7-18) and women can grow in relationship with Christ. Small Bible study groups, health awareness classes, networking/mentoring programs, and life-skills training are resources that are currently available in the communities of Enterprise and Geneva, Alabama. The ministry now has a “transitional living” component in progress that will provide a temporary residence for girls in transition who have outgrown foster care and need a bridge to adulthood.

Join us again this summer in bringing the Backyard Bible Club to Dothan neighborhoods, June 19-22, 2017.

Clete Hux is the Director of (PAM) and the (ARC), both headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. He is also a teaching elder in the PCA and has pastored churches in Alabama and South Carolina. Clete holds a M.Div from Birmingham Theological Seminary where he teaches a number of courses in apologetics, personal evangelism, world religions, and contemporary movements.

As Director of PAM, Clete will travel to Bangalore, India, in the summer of 2017 to teach and encourage native pastors. He also travels regularly within the USA to visit partners that share in PAM’s mission. Clete and his wife Karen have two grown, married sons.

Find out how you can help provide support for those without food and shelter. Your prayers, time and gifts will be greatly appreciated.

Ben Thomas, India’s director and talented lead trainer for , actively promotes a key component of

methods for winning people to the Lord. The “multiplication effect” spreads the gospel by training believers to train others one-by-one. Ben is known for using stories to share the gospel with rural and illiterate people. He teaches his methods to hundreds of Sunday School teachers who then train children to share their faith with other children. Ben is also the director of Vacation Bible School (VBS) for the

Averages of 3,000 children attend VBS annually from April to May in over 26 locations of south India. Many of the events are held outside under the trees because no facilities are available.

Ben is the son of TP Thomaskutty, a pioneer of Christian mission work in India who has been actively involved for over 50 years. At age 73, he is the founder and director of India’s national pastors known as the . Ben’s mother, Alice, is a homeopathic doctor who works with the team’s Karunalaya Children's Home. Ben’s brother, Bejoy, and sister, Betsy, also live their lives as multipliers. Ben’s wife, Pearl, is educated and licensed in teaching special needs children. Pearl makes recommendations as to which type of therapy would benefit each child. Her clients usually come by recommendation of the public school system. She also teaches adults.

Ben and Pearl have three teenage sons: Johaan, Jackin, and Jaden.

Westwood has a large collection of mission books in its library. Challenge yourself to read a number of them before the 2017 conference and document them here.

In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus teaches us thatAsk the Lord to send our

workers into His harvest field. We do not lament the lack of workers - we pray! We do not expect a great harvest to come through us, individually or corporately, until there is a widespread movement of prayer among us. Pray on your own, using the prayer guide in this booklet, or join Pastors David and Lynn weekly as they pray for missions and revival.

Every three years, the PCA sponsors the Global Missions Conference. This year’s conference will be held in Dallas, Texas, Nov. 10-12, 2017. Westwood has several options available to help defray costs for any member who wishes to attend this conference.

As Director of Professor Relations for Third Millennium Ministries, Scott travels within the US and around the world, interviewing pastors and seminary professors and collecting materials with which to create the multimedia curriculum, lesson forums, and videos that educate pastors and church leaders who lack sufficient training for the ministry.

Scott also teaches Frontier Venture’s course, which explores the biblical, historical, cultural, and strategic dimensions of God's redemptive story. Scott and his wife Sundee have three children: Nathan 20, Emily 18, and Julianna 11.

Matthew DeLong is Campus Minister for Reformed University Fellowship International (RUF-I) at Auburn University. He and his wife Sherrene have been officially welcoming students and

scholars from around the world to the Auburn-Opelika community since 2014. Both are graduates of Westminster Seminary, California: Matthew with a M.Div (2010) and Sherrene with an MA in Theological Studies (2011).

Matthew and Sherrene believe that it is a privilege to serve these students who are so far from home. The DeLongs meet their physical needs (airport pickups, Walmart runs, etc.), help build community through weekly dinners and cultural events, and provide a safe environment in which students may explore the foundations of the Kingdom of God. Through individual conversations and exploratory Bible studies, they share Scripture and the Good News of Jesus Christ. They also hold discipleship Bible studies for believing students to help equip them in following Christ and loving the church wherever God sends them. In addition to being a resource to these students who are far away from family and friends, Matthew and Sherrene promote international friendship and cultural exchange for the local Auburn-Opelika community.

It is our privilege and duty to support our missionaries. Thegiving commitment is not simply an appeal to support our missionaries; it is an invitation to become intentional in the greatest cause on earth -- extending the Good News and sharing God’s compassion.

Missionaries need an army of faithful prayer warriors who will daily bring their names and needs before God’s throne of grace. They need us at the home front to befriend them, keep in touch with them, stay alert to special needs, and welcome them graciously when they return.

Faith-Promise giving is a way to encourage one another to step out in faith. By turning in a Faith-Promise card, we are saying to God and one another: I am looking to God in faith to provide the desire and means for me to give systematically, sacrificially, and supernaturally.

What are we promising when we turn in a Faith-Promise card? We are promising that as God provides for us, we will provide, above our tithe, for the support of his missionaries.

This is between you (and your family) and God. The key to answering this question is prayer. Ask God to lead your thoughts as you reflect on your resources to show you how you can give systemati-cally. Ask Him to show you ways you can change how you live in order to give sacrificially. And ask him to provide in unexpected (supernatural) ways so you can give out of these blessings.

Your pledge for missions has the potential to have a greater impact on your spiritual life than any other event. It is not about how large a gift to give; it is about how large a place God has in your heart.

By God’s grace and as He provides, I promise to give ______ to missions over the next year. A record of my giving:

As young adults, Bert and Cheryl had placed their faith in Christ but had not yet committed to a church. When they discovered a group of young believers in Christ and a church planter at Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church in Florida, they become a part of the body of Christ. From that time on, Bert and Cheryl watched in wonder as a continuous transformation began to take place in their hearts and lives.

After retirement, Bert from a busy career in local government and Cheryl, as an educator and school administrator, they joined their church's international ministry. God began to cultivate in them an openness to serve Him in a new culture and a new world. For them, the opportunity in Bogotá, Colombia, seemed to be a match for their life experience and spiritual giftedness. Their home is now moving from Tampa to Bogota where they will join Reformed University Fellowship’s (RUF) global ministry in teaching English, extending hospitality, and assisting with campus ministry functions. The Barbers have four children and five grandchildren.

Pete and Ruth, church planters in Toulouse, France, work in collaboration with the French Reformed Evangelical Church and MTW-South France. As team leader and co-pastor of the congregation on the east side of Toulouse, Pete provides vision and pastoral care to the larger team. Currently, the team is composed of three career missionary families and two couples appointed for three years. Primary goals include evangelism training, personal evangelism, leadership development, the discipleship and nurture of believers, prayer, and networking with various Christian denominations.

By the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, the Mitchells are seeking to revitalize this church so it will help in the development of a new evangelical church plant in the western suburbs of Toulouse.

Pete and Ruth reside in an area of France where there are no Protestant churches. Their focus is to develop a relational network and prepare a launch team for a new church plant. The Mitchells have four children: Roger, Charlie, James, and Mary Ellen.

Since its 1972 inception as a Christian ministry to leper colonies in Thailand, PAM has been a compassionate care

ministry in partnership with national pastors, indigenous evangelists, and church planters of SE Asia. It exchanged the traditional missionary role for that of facilitator and supporter in order to reach a lost world for Christ.

PAM partners with and focuses on people living in outlying and underdeveloped areas of India who have never heard the Word of God. EE’s “multiplication effect” works to win people to the Lord one person at a time. The a group of national pastors founded by TP Thomaskutty over 50 years ago, has the vision and courage to go where the name of Jesus has never been preached.

Harold and Sarah are church planters who serve in Great Britain with formerly World Harvest Mission (WHM).

The Schepians have been in England since 2000. During that time, Harold served as evangelist, discipler, and deacon with the church planting team in West London and as evangelist/church planter in High Wycombe since 2010. Harold also partners with USA teams to organize, co-lead, and support short term evangelism activities.

There are 2 million Indians, Pakistanis, and Bengalis in England with over 500,000 living in the greater London area. Harold, Sarah and their three sons, Thomas 11, Nathanael 9, and Owen 6, are seeking to evangelize and establish a new church fellowship of Muslim converts in Reading where they now live. Their daughter, Elizabeth Grace Schepian was born March 30, 2016.

Joe and Becky Harrell have been with since 1986. Joe is a member of our S.E.

Alabama Presbytery. Their ministry began in Mexico where they served from 1986 to 2006, mentoring and sup-

porting national church planters. Joe became increasingly more involved in theological education during that time, which eventually led the Harrells to Colombia, South America.

In the past year, Joe completed all required classes for the Doctor of Ministry degree at Reformed Theological Seminary. He hopes to complete his thesis and graduate in 2017. During the year, he also traveled to Bucaramanga to conduct sessions in elder training, women’s seminars, marriage retreats, and diaconal vision casting. New team members have begun to arrive and will help lay the groundwork for a RUF-I ministry on the National University campus. Joe hopes to see more pastoral candidates ordained in 2017.

The Harrells have two married daughters, Elizabeth and Rachel, and five grandchildren.

Missionaries struggle in their relationship with God just as we do. Pray that your missionary will mature spiritually, have a strong prayer life, be filled with the Holy Spirit, love and study God’s Word, and make progress over personal sin.

Pray for financial security and good health. Our missionaries have busy schedules, travel often, and may live in difficult climates filled with disease. Pray for safety, stamina, and a sense of priority. Pray against discouragement, loneliness, and depression. Pray for family members left behind.

Pray that your missionary’s family life will provide an excellent model for local Christians and the unsaved. Pray for health, education, salvation, and the spiritual growth of their children. If your missionary is single, pray for strong, healthy friendships and contentment in singleness.

Pray for the stamina and understanding to demonstrate Christ cross-culturally. Learning a new language and adapting to a new culture can be frustrating and difficult. A superficial understanding of a language is insufficient for communicating spiritual truths and defending the faith. Even an elementary knowledge of a language takes years of study and practice.

Remember to pray for the things your missionary is actually doing: witnessing, visiting, teaching, preaching, counseling, and nursing. Pray for the people to whom they minister. Pray for boldness, open doors, open hearts, and excellence in the effort. Ask the Holy Spirit to em-power your missionary for productivity.

Missionaries often team up with other pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and local believers. This personality mix is de-signed to strengthen the ministry but can sometimes become weakened or strained by poor relationships. Pray for fellow workers mentioned in your missionary’s letters, and pray that they will all serve one another in good and healthy ways.

Expand your prayers to include the total country where your missionary is located. The political situation, its government and its leaders, freedom to preach the Gospel, and visas are all important factors in world evangelization. Pray that the entire country will become responsive

The Dothan Rescue Mission is a 100-bed facility that provides hot meals, temporary shelter, clothing, and hope to those who call the streets their home. Brad Hardy has been the Executive Director since 2004, and his wife Brandi is the ministry’s Human Services Director.

The mission has not received federal or state funding in its 38 years of service because it is faith-based. It runs solely off local donations and proceeds from three local area thrift stores that provide 80% of its income. The mission has a 16-bed Family Lodge, a 60-bed Men’s Lodge, a 25-bed Women’s Lodge, a chapel, and kitchen. The mission’s community center provides training in GED competency, job and life skills, discipleship growth, and computer skills. Brad and Brandi have three children: JP, Abbie, and Anna.

The Wilsons are church planters in Nagoya, Japan with a unique approach to spreading the Gospel: Start a choir first! They use this method as an opportunity to share the mes-sage of Jesus. Later, when their choir members become friends, the Wilsons are able to share the hope of Christ in a more personal way. Tom and Teresa lead two gospel choir groups: one for adults and one for elementary and junior high school boys. A primary goal of the Boy’s Choir is to bring boys into the church to find that it is a place full of true joy, affirmation, and hope.

One of the greatest challenges facing the Japanese church is the lack of male community and leadership. Boy’s Choir rehearsals are full of fun, good music,

and Bible instruction.

Most Japanese people who come to faith as adults had some exposure to the gospel as children. The Wilsons pray that their boys will put their faith in Jesus. Tom and Teresa have three children: Ian 11, Liana 6, and Anna 2.

“As they grow older, we want the boys to remain in the church but, even if they do not, we pray that they will remember the gospel message that they have heard here, sung, and witnessed.”
