MIS EN SCENE -BODY POSITIONING AND FACIAL

EXPRESSION

- What is the difference?

- Where is it found ?

- How can it influence our opinion?

EXAMPLES

These images both represent different

emotions which would cause the audience

to receive them differently.

The first image would represent the

feeling of sadness because of the closed

body posture, the lowered head and lack of

colour.

Whereas the second image would

contrast this because of the happy facial

expression , open arms and bright colours.

WHAT DO CERTAIN POSES CONNOTE?

This positioning of the body would be seen as a confidence pose and would be used on a pop magazine.

This pose would be seen as quite a flirtatious pose because of the slightly tilted head and face not directly at the camera as it leaves a mysterious look. This kind of pose would usually be seen on an Indie magazine .

EXAMPLES OF THESE POSES IN MUSIC MAGAZINES

This is an example of a Q magazine

front cover.

Here is famous artist Adele ,

positioned in a way that is quite

flirtatious with an element of mystery

because of the way the body faces

one direction and the face is towards

the reader.

The raised hand over slightly

touching the face would continue this

flirtatious approach .

Different body positions will mean different things to everyone, and the

audience will only perceive what they want from an image. However ,

due to the socially constructed stereotypes of today, media editors can

use to their advantage these poses and facial expressions to express a

certain emotion or persona on the front page of their magazine .

Lots of different aspects within an image can influence the audience’s

opinion on that person of issue . For example the use of dark clothing

and a male model with long hair would stereotypically be associated

with a rock or heavy metal magazine.
