The High Museum and Midtown Alliance pres-
ent a parade of classic cars on May 8th, 10 am - 1 pm on Peachtree.
To celebrate the High Mu-seum’s exhibit “The Allure of the Automobile,” fifty classic cars will caravan down the Midtown Mile on Peachtree from the Fox
to Woodruff Arts Cen-ter. Once they reach the Woodruff Arts center, the cars will park on Peachtree Street and be on display to the public from 11 am to 1 pm. Mention the event at select restaurants along the route to receive a 20% discount.

TransportationFaced with multiple funding challenges, Atlanta is lagging behind other major metropolitan areas in implementing transit alternatives
As an experiment, I once took MARTA to
work and reported back to my office community. The buses were clean, the ride uneventful. However, the six-mile trip took over 1-1/2 hours to complete - one way. I would gladly ride MARTA if it were at least marginally convenient to do so. However, faced with a serious lack of funding, rather than expanding services, MARTA is facing drastic service cuts.
Georgia is the only state in the U.S. that doesn’t allocate any funding for alternative transit. This leaves Georgia transit projects at a serious disad-vantage when competing for federal grants. Recently, the Peachtree Streetcar, which needed to receive 100% of its funding from federal grant money, failed to receive any portion of a $1B federal grant oppor-tunity. Funds were instead awarded to projects like the
Tucson Streetcar, which had pledged 50% of its funding from local sources.
Although a lot of hard-working people in the tran-sit movement are feeling seriously disillusioned about Atlanta’s transportation future, a faint glimmer of hope remains. As this publi-cation goes to print, we are within two weeks of a deci-sion on Governor Perdue’s transportation funding pro-posal, which would allow regions to vote on whether or not to levy a penny sales tax to fund transporta-tion. If the state is willing to take baby steps toward a broader transportation solution, I can’t help feeling like I should get off my duff and support MARTA by rid-ing whenever possible, no matter how inconvenient it is. Next time you’re heading to Piedmont Park, why not bike to the nearest MARTA station instead of driving? It won’t solve the problem, but it’s a start.

Bootcamp 4a CauseYou shouldn’t be the only one to benefit from boot camp. That’s why these trainers created BC4C, a boot camp that donates 100% of its proceeds to local causes
Maybe you’ve heard murmurings about
these strange characters, known as boot campers. Maybe you’ve noticed a grass-stained, mud-splattered group of them laughing and boasting about how many “burpees” they can do as they drink post-workout coffees in cafés near Piedmont Park.
A few years ago, boot camp was a little-known way to work out. Today, there are several boot camps operating out of Piedmont Park alone. Brand new on the scene is BC4C, the brainchild of veteran boot camp trainers Andrew Whitney, Lauren Mross, and Andy Abend.
After volunteering as boot
camp trainers for years, the BC4C founders decided to create their own boot camp and donate 100% of the proceeds to benefit local causes. “We’re passionate about boot camp and passionate about giving back to our community,” says Mross. “Since we were already volunteering our time anyway, it made sense to create a way for our time - and yours - to benefit causes we believe in.”
50% of BC4C’s net profits go to the Piedmont Park Conservancy every month. The other 50% benefit other local causes such as Open Hand and Camp Twin Lakes. Find out more about the bootcamp workout and BC4C at:www.bc4c.com.
