Welcome to summer finallyarriving within the last coupleweeks! I am not one to complainas we have been so fortunate thisseason with the weather forMAGA championships and theUSGA qualifying rounds. Theseason always flies by, but Ibelieve the weather weexperienced enhanced that fact.

The end of August means winding down, though we hada wonderful Senior Championship this month at GreenbriarHills CC. Mark Gardiner added to what was already aremarkable season by capturing the championship by a shotover Andy Frost. We are looking forward to conducting theinaugural US Four-Ball Championship qualifying for themen and women over the next two months. The women (sixteams) will compete September 23 at St. Clair CC and themen (50 teams) at Bellerive CC on October 6.

August is also the end for one of our interns, EricMendelson. Eric has headed back to the University ofMissouri for his final year at the Evans Scholar House. Ericwas a tremendous asset to our “team” this season, and wethank him for his hard work and dedication to MAGA forthe last three months. Good luck to your senior year atMIZZOU!

I also want to take a portion of my article to say thankyou to two of the most dedicated volunteers MAGA has everhad; Tom and Alice Wohlgemuth. I cannot even begin tocount the number of days and countless hours these two putin over the years officiating for MAGA! They have recentlymoved to Waco, TX to be closer to family and will be sorelymissed around MAGA championships going forward.

This edition of The Metropolitan is the final monthlyissue of the season. The next issue will cover September-October as we officially wrap up the season over the nextcouple months. This endeavor has been a great experienceand I must thank Jim Healey for his expertise in seeing thisprogram off the ground. We hope you, our members, haveenjoyed receiving the newsletter. As always, if you have anyquestions or comments please email us [email protected].

As always, feel free to reach out to me at [email protected].

Officiating during the summer at MAGA champi-onships or USGA qualifying rounds we have numer-ous situations come up that are always interesting. This occurrence happened during the recent MAGASenior Championship at Greenbriar Hills CC.

A player hit his tee shot toward an area marked as aWater Hazard (yellow) which also tied into Out ofBounds down the left of the hole . The Player as-sumed that his ball was in the lateral water hazard andput another ball in play under 26-1(a). After hittinghis tee shot under 26-1, a Fellow Competitor (not inhis group) informs him that the original ball was Outof Bounds. What is the Ruling?

If the Player WAS virtually certain that his ball wasin the Water Hazard when he put a ball in play under26-1(a), then he can proceed under 26-1, incurring aone stroke penalty.

However, if the Player was NOT virtually certain(in this case he assumed) and he put a ball in playunder Rule 26-1, he has played from a wrong placeand the original ball is lost. The player must re-playfrom the tee under rule 27-1 prior to playing fromthe next tee or he is disqualified. He incurs three (3)penalty strokes, two (2) for Playing from a WrongPlace (Rule 20-7) and one (1) for the ball Out ofBounds (Rule 27-1).

A LOOK BACK

St. Louis golf can boast of many “firsts” in the historyof golf.Glen Echo was the site of the first Gold Medal

Olympic Golf Matches and the only Gold Medal TeamGolf Event (so far) in Olympic History.St. Louis was the site of the first U.S. Amateur played

west of the Mississippi in 1921, and the first U.S.Women’s Amateur in 1925. In 1947, during the U.S. Open at St. Louis, KSD-TV

broadcast the first golf matches. It was also the firsttime that gallery ropes were used during the Open.In 1965, at the U.S. Open at Bellerive, that event

marked the first time that the event was held over fourdays. Previously, the final two rounds were both playedin one day.In 1981, Bellerive hosted the first U.S. Mid-Amateur. With all of these “firsts” you would think that there

would not be much else. However, you would beslightly off base. Two area players - Don Bliss (Norwood Hills) and

Mark Boyajian (St. Clair CC) - each earned a remark-able “first” during their play at a U.S. Mid-Amateurcompetition. Can you imagine what it was?In 1985, during the first qualifying round, Don made

a hole-in-one on the eighth and tenth holes atBrookhaven GC in Dallas. He was the first - and so farthe only one - to make two aces during a single roundin any USGA championship!Boyajian followed up the next year with an equally

impressive first. In 1986, at Annandale CC in Madi-son,Wisconsin, Mark became the first player in USGAhistory to post a 29. He did so on his first nine duringhis first round. It wasn’t until later that Jim Holtgrievebrought this to the attention of the USGA that Markwas properly recognized for this accomplishment.

Ellen Port swears by it. In fact, prior to a practice session in January for 14 prospective Curtis Cup players, reading itwas one of her homework assignments for the players. Now we’re talking about 14 of the most talented women collegiateplayers in the country at some of the top golf programs. While Ellen won’t say this was the reason why they dominated theGB&I Team so thoroughly, it certainly did not hurt!

Written by Dr. Jason Selk, 10-Minute Toughness is the first book of its kind that teaches individuals exactlywhat to do to be mentally prepared for competition and sports, and it does so in a very user-friendly manner.Targeting tools for mental toughness, it is designed to help competitors and coaches identify what it takes to be successfuland to improve focus, concentration, confidence, and motivation requiring just 10 minutes of practice per day.” So, thefirst question asked is, who is this Dr. Jason Selk? Turns out, he’s a pretty impressive guy! While serving as the Director of Mental Training for the St Louis Cardinals, Dr. Jason Selk helped the team

win their first World Series in over 20 years, and in 2011 he assisted the Cardinals in the historic feat of win-ning their second World Championship in a six year period. Dr Selk’s second book, Executive Toughness, while10-Minute Toughness, is on pace to be one of the best-selling sport psychology books of all time.

First, we must ask ourselves, what really is mental toughness? Mental toughness is the ability to have thethoughts in your head help produce your desired results. Golfers know all too well the the impact of negativethinking on performance, as there is often plenty of time between shots for self-doubt to take over.

The key to mental toughness is to have the thoughts in your head be productive. The hard part is that thenatural way of thinking, especially when the pressure is on, is to have thoughts that are unproductive. This isone of the fundamental reasons that success is so difficult to acquire. When the pressure is on, it is normal for aperson to have thoughts of self-doubt and negativity, or even the typical 'don’t' thinking.

For example the football player is likely to hear the internal words of “don’t drop this pass,” or the baseballplayer tells himself “don’t strikeout.” This type of thinking is at the opposite end of the mental toughness spec-trum, as it actually is counter-productive in terms of producing desired results. If the baseball player is thinkingto himself, "don't strikeout," he is NOT thinking about what he should focus on in order to get a hit.

Productive thoughts focus on what is needed for success. The football player trying to catch the pass mightsay, “see it in and squeeze it tight,” while the baseball player says, "track the ball, short compact swing”. Thehard part is having the productive thoughts when the pressure is on.

The two steps necessary to accomplishing mental toughness are to first identify what your productivethoughts are, and then train your mind to have those thoughts at the important times. For example, a golfermay say to himself while putting, "see the spot, roll in it." Practicing this statement in a daily mental workoutand practicing replacing all negative thinking (e.g., "don't miss this putt") with positive performance cues willnot only help prevent anxiety on the tee, but will also create more consistent performance.

Remember, it is abnormal to be mentally tough. Mental toughness does not happen on accident. Just likephysical strength and precision, it takes a lot of work. You have to know first what your mental toughnessthoughts are, and then you have to train your mind to be able to have the mental toughness thoughts especiallywhen the pressure is on.

This might sound funny but I want you to be abnormal, I want you to be abnormally mentally tough enoughto have the thoughts in your head make it easier for you to achieve your dreams. Being great isn’t easy, it’s notsupposed to be easy. Choose to be great everyday by putting energy into training your mind to have productivethoughts and mental toughness.

Glen Echo lived up to its reputation as a top-flight track as the U.S. SeniorAmateur competitors found the historic course up to the challenge during qualifyingfor the championship, to be played at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach,California. With Scott Edwards, Jim Dunn and Craig Hardcastle managing rounds of 73, they

forced a three-for-two playoff to see who would be on their way to Newport Beach. On the first playoff hole, the long dogleg right par-4 18th, Edwards made par toensure himself a trip to California, while both Dunn and Hardcastle posted bogey5s, forcing them to move to the first hole to determine the second qualifier. The380-yard first hole was playing nearly a half a stroke over par during thecompetition, with both players gladly took their 4s as they walked up the hill to the18th tee once again. The 18th, at 411-yards, was also playing difficult for the day, yielding only two birdies. Though both players made par here during regulationplay, under the pressure of the playoff both made bogey earlier and they each missedthe green again with their second shot. However, Hardcastle, short of the greenwith his approach, made a nice recovery from 43-yards away to 3-feet to give himselfa chance for par. Meanwhile, Dunn was in the area to the left of the greenside bunker. With the pin

cut to the left side, Jim tried to finesse a shot to get it close. Unfortunately, his thirdlanded in the near bunker, under a steep lip - forcing him to take an unplayable lie -giving Hardcastle two-putts to earn the second playoff spot.

Jim Dunn was the odd-manout in the 3 for 2 playoff.

In 1948, the PGA was played at Match Playand the host club was Norwood Hills.

Following the 36-hole qualifying rounds, thelow 63 players joined defending champion JimFerrier to determine the winner. A number oflocal professionals were in the group including:Walter Ambo and Frank Moore. Other notableswere: Sam Snead, Lew Worsham, Gene Sarazen,Horton Smith, Jimmy Demaret, Lloyd Mangrumand Claude Harmon.

Also qualifying was Ben Hogan at 138 (134was low qualifing score) and Mike Turnesa, ofthe six famous Turnesa brothers. Hogan hadposted a 66 - 72 while Snead had put up a pairof 68s.

There were a few upsets in the early roundsas Ferrier bowed out in round two, as didMoore. Ferrier is quoted as saying, “There area lot of hills at Norwood. No old man will winthis Championship.”

The quarterfinals saw Harmon down Snead in42 holes, while Demaret defeated George Fazio5 & 4, with Turnesa and Hogan both winningtheir matches. In the semifinals, Turnesa beatHarmon, the current Masters champion, in 37holes, while Hogan edged his good friendDemaret 2&1. During their match, both playersfinished at 10-under par

The final match should have been asinteresting. While Turnesa consistentlyoutdrove Hogan, Ben relied on his superb ironplay. His 66 on the morning round found him 4-up. His 7 & 6 victory was the 2nd largest marginof victory in the PGA at that time.

WIth the PGA played in May, Hogan went onto win the US Open in June, becoming the firstto win both in the same year since GeneSarazen in 1922. For the week, Hogan was acombined 35-under par over 213 holes in his 10rounds. But for a man of 36, he was also quiteweary.

Following his auto accident in 1949, Hogan would not compete in the PGA again until 1960.
