The Petrifying Well is a well in the shape of a big skull and because of this the people of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, believed it was a cursed place. The location, however, has another odd feature: whatever comes in to contact with the water turns to stone in a short time. This happens due to the high content of minerals including calcite, that by dripping on to objects create a kind of coating, a hard shell made of miner-als. The sight seen by visiting tourists is very impressive due to the presence of hats, teddies, dolls and rattles, left by visitors, all turned to stone.

The Dutch law enforcement agencies have come up with a rather effective method to intercept drones, which when flying over airports and residential areas could pose security problems. With the help of a private company police is train-ing eagles in order to recognise drones in the sky, harpoon them in flight and deposit them in a safe place. The adopted solution seems optimal both in terms of efficiency and costs. To avoid injuring these intelligent birds of prey, studies are also being carried out to create a system which better protects their claws from the propellers at the time of engagement.

The Petrifying Well è un pozzo che ha la forma di un grande teschio e per questo gli abitanti di Knaresborough, nel North Yorkshire, credevano fosse un posto maledetto. Il luogo, però, ha un'altra particolarità: in breve tempo qualsiasi cosa venga a contatto con l'acqua, diventa di pietra. Ciò è possibile grazie all'alto contenuto di minerali, tra cui la calcite, che colando sugli oggetti crea una sorta di rivestimento, un guscio duro di minerali. Lo spettacolo che si presenta ai turisti è molto suggestivo grazie alla presenza di cappellini, peluche, bambole e sonagli, tutti pietrificati, lasciati dai visitatori.

Le Forze dell’Ordine olandesi hanno escogitato un metodo piuttosto efficace per intercettare i droni che, volando sopra aeroporti e centri abitati, potrebbero costituire problemi alla sicurezza. Con l’aiuto di una società privata, infatti, la Polizia sta addestrando delle aquile al fine di riconoscere un drone nel cielo, ar-pionarlo al volo e depositarlo in un luogo sicuro. La soluzione adottata appare ottimale sia in termini di efficienza, che di costi. Per evitare di ferire gli intel-ligenti rapaci, si sta studiando anche un sistema che protegga meglio gli artigli dalle eliche al momento dell’aggancio.

Nei mesi di giugno e settembre, arrivano gli squali balena, con esemplari che raggiungono i quindici metri di lunghezza: sono docili, si nutrono di plancton, ed è perfino possibile nuotare al loro fianco. Un’esperienza indimen-ticabile.Isla Mujeres, infine, l’isola delle donne, dove i ritmi si allentano e dove il panorama è pura magia. Quest’isola, lunga otto chilometri e larga cinquecento metri, si trova ad appena sei chilometri dalla costa nord-est di Cancún.

L’Isla, come la chiamano affettuosamente i messicani, ha acqua trasparente, calda, ricca di vita marina. Il Parque Marino El Garrafón è il posto ideale per fare belle nuotate, ma anche per praticare snorkeling, nuotare con i delfini, avventurarsi con il kayak, dedicarsi alle im-mersioni e perfino fare trekking su sentieri di montagna. Nella parte più meridionale dell’Isla svetta un moderno faro da cui si può osservare un piccolo tempio maya dedicato a Ixchel, dea della fertilità. Cozumel has a formidable past linked to the Mayas, who built more than 36 cities here. El Cedral is the oldest cen-ter, the ruins of which still survive today hidden by the forest, alongside a picturesque village situated in the west of the island, a few kilometers from the playa of San Francisco. Prima di vederlo indossare i panni di Kip Stevens, in Vinyl, il giovane Jagger ha sperimentato davvero la musica, con la band Turbogeist, ma il suo talento sembra essere un altro, la recitazione. D’altronde avere come termine di paragone un padre come Mick Jagger non deve essere certo facile.

Ma, per lavorare al personaggio interpretato nella serie Vinyl, Ja-mes ha di sicuro avuto tanti spunti a cui attingere: Kip Stevens, infatti, è il leader di un gruppo proto-punk, i Nasty Bits. Per tutti gli appassionati immediato è il gioco di rimandi: si tratta degli Stooges? O dei New York Dolls? O dei Ramones? Quanto Mick c'è nel personaggio interpretato da James? Ed è questo continuo confondersi tra realtà e finzione, tra docu-fiction e fiction pura, che rende tanto attraente la serie tv che lo vede protagonista. Eventi e personaggi sono infatti estremamente re-alistici e i riferimenti ai protagonisti dell'epoca sono tantissimi: nella prima puntata si parla di un contratto per i Led Zeppelin, incontriamo Robert Plant e si fa riferimento a un certo Andy

Warhol. Ci sembra di scorgere Nico, ma non ha la frangetta, non ne siamo sicuri… Vinyl è un viaggio nel fervore musicale della New York anni '70, lì dove la sperimentazione artistica, sessuale e delle droghe si fondevano sotto un'unica stella: il Rock. Ed è sotto quella stessa stella che nel 1985 nasceva James e sotto quella stessa stella, oggi, i talenti di padre e figlio si incontrano. Mentre dal firmamento del Rock, da Marte forse o dalla sua Black Star, si affaccia anche David Bowie: nella sesta puntata ci viene regalato un commo-vente cameo del dio del glam rock, «David era un amico molto caro (...) e questa serie è anche un modo positivo per ricordare e onorare la sua vita e il suo lavoro» dichiara Mick Jagger.

in the new HBO produced tv project, there is his son, James, his mirror image. James is one of 7juniorJaggers, the third son from his second wife, the American model Jerry hall. James is thirty years old, he has his father’s voluptuous lips and mother’s elegance. From both parents he has inherited a great deal of sex appeal. Before wearing the shoes of Kip Stevens, in Vinyl, the young Jagger really experimented with music with the group Turbogeist, but his talent seems to lay elsewhere, in acting. Besides, having a father like Mick Jagger as a comparison cannot be at all easy. But, to work on the character played in the series Vinyl, James certainly has had many points to draw from: Kip is in fact the leader of a new proto-punk group, The NastyBits. To all fans the referenceplay is obvious, is it the Stooges? Or the New York Dolls? Or the Ramones? How much of Mick is interpreted

in James’s character? It is the continuous con-fusion between reality and fiction, betweendo-cu-fiction and pure fiction which makes the tv series, in which he is the main character, very interesting. Events and characters are indeed extremely real and the references to the protag-onists of the time are many: in the first episode there is talk of a contract for Led Zeppelin, we meet Robert Plant and there is a reference to a certain Andy Warhol. Vinyl is a journey through the music heat in New York in the seventies, there where the ar-tistic, sexual and drugs experimentation united under one star: Rock. It is under the same star in 1985 that James was born, and under the same star today the talents of father and son meet. Whilst from the firmament of the Rock, from Mars perhaps or from his Black Star, David Bowie is also seen: in the sixth episode we are given a moving cameo the glam rock god, «David was a very dear friend ( ... ) and this series is also a positive way to remember and honor his life and his work», has declared Mick Jagger.

nella provincia pugliese, si laurea come tanti meridionali in Giurisprudenza e poi, come tanti meridionali, emigra al Nord, a Milano. Nel 2009 esce il suo primo film Cado dalle nubi, che racconta il resto della storia: il sogno delle luci della

ribalta, la casualità di un incontro, un provino, il pubblico che impazzisce. Ma il successo non è solo quello raccontato nella finzione scenica: il film incassa quattordici milioni di euro. Così Checco Zalone smette di essere uno dei tanti comici del palcoscenico di Zelig e diventa un fenomeno da botteghino. Il suo talento comico non lascia scampo alla critica che inizia ad interrogarsi: ma questo Zalone perché piace tanto? Perché piace a tutti? Questo Zalone, si chiede la critica, quo va?Nel 2011 è la volta di Che bella giornata e gli incassi arrivano a 43 milioni e 400 mila euro: battuti la commovente e poetica La vita è bella di Roberto Benigni e il colossal Titanic. 2013, Sole a Catinelle, 51 milioni di euro e 8 milioni e mezzo

Checco Zalone però non è il nuovo Boldi-De Sica, nessun parallelismo con i cinepanettoni, per lui si smuove la critica più raffinata tanto che a certi eccessi Zalone risponde «Mi sento l’unghia dei grandi a cui mi hanno accostato. Non lo dico per fare l’umile, ma perché non li conosco. Anzi, faccio un appello per una maggior sobrietà nelle manifestazioni mondane del mondo del cinema, perché se no io continuo a fare delle figuracce: l’ultima volta non ho riconosciuto Bel-locchio e ho parlato per un’ora con Garrone pensando che

fosse Stefano Accorsi». Nove milioni di italiani affollano le sale: critici seriosi, cinefili preparatissimi, destra, sinistra, centro, impiegati pubblici, dirigenti privati, polentoni, terro-ni. Checco Zalone unisce tutti nel nome del comico. Tutti lo hanno visto, tutti ne parlano. Ma soprattutto tutti hanno riso e tutti, o quasi, lo ammettono. Lo scrittore Nicola Lagioia, intellettuale sapiente e conterraneo dello stesso Zalone, fa un'analisi acuta, sottilmente sferzante, riconosce i meriti e non fa sconto ai limiti «Sui social, insieme col successo,sono arrivate le solite risse un pò inutili tra i fan di Zalone e chi si richiama a Bertold Brecht per denigrarlo - scrive Lagioia - Sventurato il paese che deve fare il gioco della torre tra intrattenimento e autorialità».

Vadis. Solecisms? No, they are some of the titles of big movie successes for the comic from Bari which use a very clever and funny play on words in the Italian language. Luca Medici, aka Checco Zalone, was born in the province of Puglia, he, like many southerners, graduated in Law and, as many south-erners, emigrated to the North, to Milan. In 2009 he released his first film Cado dalle nubi, which tells the rest of the story: dreaming of the limelight, a random meeting, an audition, the audience that goes wild. Yet success was not only part of the movie’s fiction: the film actually made fourteen million euro. And so Checco Zalone stopped just being one of the many Zelig stage comedians and became a box office phenomenon. His comic talent is not exempt from critics whom begin to ask: why is this Zalone guy liked so much? Why does everyone like him? This Zalone, ask critics, quo vadis?In 2011 it was the turn of Che bella giornata (What a beautiful day) and the box office takings reached 43 million 400 thousand euro: beating the touching and poetic Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni, and the colossal Titanic. 2013, Sole a Catinelle (Sun in buckets), 51 million euros and 8 and a half million spectators. sportivi più pagati al mondo. Vite perfette, patinate, costante-mente al centro dell’attenzione dei media e dei numerosissimi fan. Ma non sempre è oro tutto ciò che luccica e le difficoltà, per arrivare fin qui, non sono di certo mancate.LeBron James nasce ad Akron, una piccola cittadina dell’Ohio, dalla sedicenne Gloria e da padre sconosciuto. Trascorre la sua infanzia in fortissime ristrettezze economiche, inseguendo un destino che per lui sembrava già scritto. Poi l’incontro con l’uomo che gli ha cambiato la vita, il suo allenatore di football, che lo accoglie in casa, gli infonde una disciplina rigida egli fa conoscere il basket, lo sport che lo ha salvato. Bryant, invece, ha avuto un’infanzia diversa: figlio d’arte, vive in Italia fino all'età di 13 anni, seguendo il padre che milita nel campionato italiano. Ancora adolescente torna negli Stati Uniti per iscriversi alla high school e, dopo soli due anni, è già sul campo con indosso la maglia dei Lakers. Una scalata al successo repentina che, però, si arresta bruscamente nel 2003, quando, sposato e con una figlia appena nata, viene accusato di stupro. Nonostante la vicenda si sia conclusa con il ritiro delle accuse, questo evento resta una macchia indelebile nella sua carriera, il rovescio della medaglia di una popolarità veloce e travolgente. Due storie diverse, quelle di Kobe e LeBron, ma accomunate dallo stesso destino. I loro duelli sul campo hanno fatto scuola, ma adesso è tempo di deporre le armi e di affrontare quella che, con l’annuncio del ritiro di Bryant, ques-ta sarà la loro ultima impresa insieme: essere i primi uomini a conquistare, dopo Pechino e Londra, il terzo oro consecutivo alle Olimpiadi di Rio. He spent his childhood in a very difficult financial situation, chasing a destiny that seemed already written for him. Then came an encounter with the man who changed his life, his football coach, who took him in, gave him a strict discipline and introduced him to basketball, the sport that saved him. James has made it, but this has not made him forget his roots: in 2014, after four glo-rious seasons with Miami Heat, he decided go back and play where it all began, in Ohio, for the Cavaliers. Bryant, on the other hand, had a different childhood: born into sport, he lived in Italy until the age of 13, following his father who played in the Italian league. Still a teenager he returns to the US to enroll in high school and after only two years is already on the court wearing the Lakers shirt. A sudden rise to fame that stops abruptly in 2003, when, married with a newborn daughter, he is accused of rape. Although the case ended with the withdrawal of charges, this event remains an indelible stain in his career, the flip side of a fast and overwhelming popularity. Kobe’s and LeBron’s are two different stories, but united by the same fate. Their duels on the court have become well known, but now it is time to lay down their arms and to face that, following the announcement of the withdrawal of Bryant, this will be their last venture together: to be the first men to gain, after Beijing and London, the third consecutive gold at the Rio Olympics. Percorrendo le strade di Cuba, sull’asfalto circondato da canne da zucchero, potreste trovarvi improv-

visamente immersi nel passato di un sogno coloniale. Vicoli lastricati di pietre di fiume, facciate colorate sotto tetti di argilla rossa, cancelli e colonne adornati di fiori, e cavalli che trainano carrozze, scalpitando tra rintocchi di campane. È l’atmosfera sospesa e irreale che si

respira a Trinidad, conosciuta come la città museo proprio in virtù della sua bellezza senza tempo. Tutto qui si è conservato intatto, come in un quadro del 1500. Chiese e palazzi di architet-tura coloniale circondano le piazze del centro storico, animate di luce e canti, di abitanti seduti davanti al portone tra cesti odorosi di manghi e banane. Dalla splendida Plaza Mayor, sulla quale svetta

la Torre della Chiesa di San Francisco de Asis, potete ammirare il panorama mozzafiato delle montagne della Sierra dell’Escambray, che la circondano come una corolla. Oppure accedere a uno dei musei che costellano la piccola città, dal Museo Romantico al Museo Histórico Municipal, o ancora sedervi all’ombra di una palma sorseggiando Chanchara da una noce di cocco, la bevanda tipica

La location scelta è la Ciudad Deportiva de la Habana. «Abbiamo suonato in tanti posti speciali nel cor-so della nostra lunga carriera ha detto Jagger - ma questo concerto a L’Avana resterà come una vera e propria pietra miliare, per noi e, speriamo anche per i nostri amici cubani». Il concerto, parte dell'America Latina Ole Tour, è stato organizzato e sostenuto con un intento benefico: donare strumenti ai musicisti locali grazie anche al sup-porto della Latin Grammy Cultural Fondation.

Strolling through the streets of Cuba, on the tarmac surrounded by sugar canes,

you may find yourself suddenly immersed in the past of a colonial dream. Streets cobbled with river rocks, coloured facades with red clay roofs, gates and columns adorned with flowers, and horses pulling carriages, between the toll-ing of bells. This is the suspended and unreal atmosphere you can breathe in Trinidad, known as the museum city because of its timeless beauty. Everything here has been preserved intact, as in a painting from 1500. Churches and colonial architecture buildings surround the squares of the old town, animated by lights and songs, by people sitting at their front door between fragrant baskets of mangoes and bananas. From the beautiful Plaza Mayor, on which stands the Tower of the Church of San Francisco de Asis, you can admire the breathtaking view of

the Sierra Escambray mountains, which surround it like a corol-la. Or you can visit one of the museums that fill the small town, from the Romantic Museum to the Histórico Municipal Museum, or still you can sit in the shade of a palm tree sipping Chanchara from a coconut, the traditional drink of the town made with rum, honey and juice lime. When you feel quenched, try climbing along the road that leads to the Hermit of Our Lady of Candelaria, a hospi-tal of the eighteenth century now abandoned and lived in by shep-herds. On its height you can wait for sunset, which flames up the sea like pink fire falling on Trinidad. Not far from Trinidad de Cuba another peaceful town emerges, immune to the treading of tourism. It is the tranquil Remedios, a charming town in the province of Santa Clara. There you will find the Plaza Marti, with its huge trees and the Church of San Juan

Batista that hides valuable sculp-tures. At the Museum of Parrandas remedianas you can discover the most important event of the year, where the city districts compete in fantasy between floats, costumes and fireworks. A moment of collective joy that you can imagine sitting at the historic Cafè Louvre, to savor the serenity of a peaceful and dignified life.

On the 25th of March history gives Cuba and the Rolling Stones a date to remem-ber. A free concert and first live exhibition from Mick Jagger’s legendary band, never before held in Cuba. The chosen location is the Ciudad Deportiva de la Habana. «We have played in many special places over the course of our career - said Jagger - but this concert in Havana will be a milestone for us and we hope it will be the same for our Cuban friends». The concert, part of the Latin America Ole Tour, is organized and funded with a charitable intent: to donate instruments to local musicians with thanks to the support from the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation.

LA SFIDA DI SALVATORE CIMMINOA LUGLIO NEI MARI DI CUBA

L’atleta disabile italiano è in tour nei mari di tutto il mondo per portare avanti la sua impresa: richiamare l’attenzione sul

universo delle disabilità e dimostrare che le barrieree i confini possono e devono essere superati, sempre.

Correnti, squali, banchi di meduse. E poi la stanchezza, quella che lo assalirà dopo ore ed ore di nuoto

in mezzo all’oceano. Salvatore Cimmino nuoterà da L’Avana, la capitale di Cuba, a Key West, in Florida, 166 chilometri d’acqua, una sessantina di ore senza sosta durante le quali non riposerà, non mangerà e reintegrerà soltanto i sali minerali. E non monterà alcuna protesi per rimpiazzare la gamba che gli manca, quella che per un osteosarcoma – un tumore che nasce nelle cellule delle ossa - gli venne amputata all’altezza del femore quando aveva 15 anni. Ora ne ha 51 e si allena con la forza e l’impegno di un ragazzino: almeno 20 chilometri di nuoto al giorno in due sedute, una al mattino e l’altra al pomeriggio. Il suo sco-po è sensibilizzare opinione pubblica e istituzioni sul tema della disabilità: “Spero che la mia impresa - dice - suscitando curiosità, riesca a focalizzare l’attenzione sul mondo della disabilità e sulle difficoltà che le persone disabili vivono quotidiana-mente”. Per questa traversata, fra gli altri patrocinii, c’è anche quello delle Nazioni Unite. Anche perché nel mondo, per avere un’idea, ci sono oltre 750 milioni di persone con disabilità, il 10% totale della popolazione.Salvatore, atleta del Circolo Canottie-ri Aniene, non è nuovo ad imprese di questo tipo: nel 2009 ha attraversato il Canale delle Manica e nel 2010 ha lancia-to l’iniziativa “A nuoto nei mari del globo - Per un mondo senza barriere e senza frontiere”, un tour natatorio per sensibiliz-zare l’opinione pubblica sulla disabilità. “Tutti possiamo fare tutto” è il suo slo-gan. Vuole superare barriere materiali e interiori, dimostrando che “andare oltre” si può e che lo sport è uno straordina-rio strumento per farlo. “Sarà anche un esperimento scientifico” ha sottolineato Eugenio Guglielmelli, direttore dell’unità

di ricerca di robotica biomedica presso la facoltà di Ingegneria dell’Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. “Saremo presenti a fianco di Salvatore, in colla-borazione con alcune università ameri-cane – ha detto – perché quello che sta cercando di fare è anche un esperimento scientifico. Quindi, data l’unicità dell’im-presa, monitoreremo i suoi parametri vitali, la performance e una serie di dati durante la traversata”. Questa impresa ha un solo precedente, portato a termine dall’atleta normodotata statunitense Diana Nyad, che ce l’ha fatta al quinto tentativo. Sono molti, infatti, i pericoli e le difficoltà fisiche, meteorolo-giche e ambientali da affrontare – tra cui correnti, squali, banchi di meduse – che saranno monitorati anche grazie al sup-porto di un team di appoggio che resterà costantemente a fianco del nuotatore. E a chi gli chiede come affronta psicologi-camente l’enormità di questa sfida, Sal-vatore risponde con semplicità: “Amo la vita, amo nuotare, e quando nuoto torno ad avere tutte e due le gambe”.

For this crossing, among other patronages, there is also that of the United Nations. Because in the world, to give you an idea, there are over 750 million people with disabilities, 10% of the total population.Salvatore, an athlete of the Circolo Ca-nottieri Aniene, is not new to quests like this: in 2009 he crossed the Channel and in 2010 launched the initiative “Swimming in the Seas of the Globe - for a world without barriers and without frontiers”, a swimming tour to sensitise public opinion on disability. “We are all capable of everything” is his slogan. He wants to overcome material and personal barriers, proving that “going beyond” is possible and that sport is a powerful tool for doing so. “It will also be a scientific experiment” stressed Eugenio Guglielmelli, Director of the research unit of biomedical robotics at the Faculty of Engineering of the Univer-sity Campus Bio-Medico of Rome. “We

will be at Salvatore’s side, in collaboration with some American universities – he said - because what he is trying to do is also a scientific experiment. So, given the uniqueness of his task, we will monitor his vital parameters, performance and other data during the crossing”. This challen-ge has only been done once previous, completed by the extremely able bodied American athlete Diana Nyad, who ma-naged it on the fifth attempt. There are in-deed many dangers; physical challenges, weather and environment to be faught - including currents, sharks and shoals of jellyfish - which will also be monitored with the support of a team that will remain constantly beside the swimmer. When asked how he will psychologically face the enormity of this challenge, Salvatore simply answers: “I love life, I love to swim, and when I swim I go back to having both legs”.

al Papa hanno divise sgargianti, per-ché sono alti e belli, perché segnano il confine fra l’Italia e il Vaticano. Ma non tutti conoscono la loro storia. Bisogna tornare al tempo del Rinascimento, al 1506 quando Papa Giulio II fece venire a Roma gli Svizzeri: di loro si conoscevano la forza d’animo e la fedeltà prover-biale. Vennero arruolati con il titolo di Difensori della libertà della Chiesa. Ai tempi fare il mercenario era piuttosto normale e in Vaticano ne arrivarono 150. Furono subito impegnatissimi e seppero dimostrare il loro valore. Il 6 maggio 1527 i Lanzichenecchi, truppe di mercenari al soldo dell’Imperatore Carlo V d’Asburgo, li massacrarono in quello che è passato alla storia come il Sacco di Roma: nella battaglia caddero 147 delle 189 Guardie Svizzere che componevano il Corpo.Oggi non si combatte più, e i compiti della Guardia sono cambiati. Devono garantire la protezione ravvicinata del Santo Padre, servizio svolto da personale altamente qualificato e specificatamente

istruito. Oltre all’incarico di sicurezza, fanno parte dei compiti di una Guardia anche il servizio d’ordine e d’onore: presenta gli onori militari del Papa in occasione di visite di Capi di Stato, Am-basciatori, Ministri e altre Personalità. In questi mesi, con il Giubileo, il loro lavoro è senz’altro intensificato.Il Corpo è composto da 110 cittadini svizzeri, di religione cattolica, di altezza superiore a 174 centimetri e per essere arruolati servono almeno un diploma di scuola media e una reputazione inecce-pibile. Chi diventa Alabardiere deve aver meno di 30 anni ed essere celibe ed è possibile sposarsi solo dopo aver acquisito il grado di Caporale. Le Guardie abitano senza eccezione in Vaticano. La durata di servizio minima è di due anni ed il loro lavoro è organizzato in tre squadre che si danno il cambio ogni 24 ore: mentre una è di servizio, regolarmente una seconda squadra rinforza lo schieramento ed è pronta a entrare in azione in caso di necessità. The pictures with the Swiss Guards is always a great memory in a photo album. Because these soldiers who swore to be faithful to

the Pope have brilliant uniforms, they are tall and beautiful, and because they mark the border between Italy and the Vatican City. However, not everyone knows their story. We need to go back to the Renaissance, to 1506 when Pope Julius II brought the Swiss to Rome: they were known for their fortitude and proverbial loyalty. They were enrolled with the title of Defenders of the Church’s freedom. At the time becoming a mercenary was quite normal and 150 of them arrived at the Vatican. They were immediately busy and were able to prove their worth. On the 6th of May 1527 the Landsknecht, troops of mercenaries for Emperor Charles V, fought them in what is known to history as the Sack of Rome: in this battle 147 of the 189 Swiss Guards who made up the body died.

Today they no longer fight and the tasks of the Guards have changed. They must ensure the close protection of the Holy Father, a service performed by highly qualified and specifically trained staff. In addition to safeguarding, part of a Guard’s task is to maintain order and honor: they present the military honors of the Pope during visits with heads of state, ambas-sadors, ministers and other important people. In recent months, with the Jubilee, their work has certainly intensified.The body is made up of 110 Swiss citizens, of Catholic religion and taller than 174 centi-meters. To be enrolled one needs at least a high school diploma and an impeccable reputation. Fino ai primi anni duemila Blue Monday era solo il titolo di un celebre e lunghissimo (ben sette

minuti) brano della band synth pop britannica New Order. Il pezzo era stato ispirato ai membri del gruppo dalla delusione provata alla fine di ogni loro concerto, che non si concludeva mai con la richiesta di un bis da parte del pubblico. Sarà per questo che, circa undici anni fa, quando in molti decise-ro di ufficializzare la nascita del giorno più triste dell’anno, si pensò proprio alle note di quel lunedì blu. Per molti, intendiamo soprattutto gli inglesi, per i quali questa giornata, che cade ogni terzo lunedì di gennaio, è diventata una vera e propria tradizione. Dal sito bluemonday.org, che propone nume-rosi spunti per trascorrere in maniera

felice questo tremendo inizio settima-na, alle numerose ONG, che offrono consulenza psicologica, fino addirittura alla BritishDieteticAssociation, che per combattere il malumore consiglia un’alimentazione a base di alimenti nutrienti e priva di caffeina, la febbre del blu ha contagiato proprio tutti. Ma come è nata questa originale ricorren-za? A quanto sembra il Blue Monday si basa su un’equazione matematica mes-sa a punta dallo psicologo Cliff Arnall, che per realizzarla ha tenuto conto di diversi tipi di parametri: clima, distan-za dalle festività natalizie, situazione economica, fallimento dei buoni pro-positi, etc. Questo studio, tuttavia, non ha alcun fondamento scientifico e la stessa Cardiff Università, di cui Arnall faceva parte, ne ha preso totalmente

le distanze. L’istituzione del giorno più triste dell’anno, infatti, sembrerebbe avere alla base motivazioni tutt’altro che scientifiche e di certo non molto nobili. La più accreditata è che si tratti di una questione puramente economi-ca. Pare che di mezzo ci sia lo zampino della nota compagnia di viaggi Sky Tra-vel che, attraverso uno spot pubblici-tario, spingeva alla prenotazione delle vacanze per sfuggire da una presunta “depressione” post-natalizia. until the early years of 2000 Blue Monday was just the title of a famous and very long song (seven minutes) by the British synth pop band New Order. The song was inspired by the group

members from the disappointment they felt at the end of every con-cert when they never got a request for an encore from the audience. Maybe this is why about eleven years ago when many decided to make ufficial the date of the saddest day of the year, they thought about the notes of that blue Monday. For many, especially the British, this day, which falls on every third Monday in January, has become a real tradition. The Blue fever has infected everyone, from the website bluemonday.org, which offers many ideas for happily spending this horrendous beginning of the week, to the many NGOs that offer psychological counseling, even up to the BritishDieteticAssociation, which recommends a diet of nutritious foods and no caffeine to lift

moods. But how did this original celebration begin? Apparently Blue Monday is based on an equation made by the mathematical psycholo-gist Cliff Arnall, which to calculate it took account of different types of parameters: climate, distance from the holiday season, economic situation, failure of good intentions, etc. However, his study has no scientific foundation and the same Cardiff University, of which Arnall was part, has not made any acknowledgements. The establi-shment of the saddest day of the year, it seems, is not actually based on science , but on other motivations, which are certainly not very noble. The most accredited is it being a purely economic issue. It seems that in the midst of it all there is the travel company Sky Travel. The company used an advert to push the booking of holidays to escape from a supposed post-Christmas “depression”. In short Blue Monday is a really sad day, but not for everyone

la pastiera è un dolce appartenente alla cultura culinaria partenopea, un pila-stro della sua pasticceria, tradizional-

mente legato al periodo pasquale travalica ogni tradizione e viene preparato e degu-stato tutto l’anno. La ricetta tradizionale prevede una torta di pasta frolla con un ripieno a base di ricotta, frutta candita e grano bollito nel latte. La sempre più diffusa dieta vegana ne propone una sua versione altrettanto amabile. Eccola. Preparate la base di pasta frolla con gli ingredienti per l’impasto (niente burro e niente uova quindi) fino ad ottenere una consistenza dura. Lasciate riposare per un mezzoretta. Dedicatevi quindi al ripieno. In acqua bollente scottate il riso per

pochissimi minuti (3-4 minuti), scolate e lasciate freddare. In un pentolino portate ad ebollizione latte di soia e zucchero, aggiungere piano piano l’agar agar e girare (5-7 minuti); spegnere il fuoco e lasciar raffreddare il tutto. Quando il compo-sto sarà tiepido aggiungere la fialetta di vaniglia, il riso e i canditi. Stendete la base di frolla in una tortiera di 26 cm di diametro con bordo alto: la base sarà di circa 5-7 mm: bucherellate con la forchetta. Mettete il composto sopra la base di frolla e decorate a piacimento. Infornate la torta per circa 40 minuti a 180°, preferibilmente a forno ventilato. Prima di servire aspettate che la torta si sia freddata.

Spread the shortbread base into a pan of 26 cm in diameter with high edges: the base will be about 5-7 mm: prick with a fork. Put the mixture over the base of the pastry and decorate to taste. Bake the cake for about 40 minutes at 180 °, preferably in a ventilated oven. Before serving, wait for the cake to cool.

In oltre 2.000 mq di superficie espositiva e 24 sale site al piano nobile di Palazzo Reale di Milano, l’e-sposizione crea un dialogo tra le opere dei simbolisti italiani e quelle degli artisti stranieri. Sono presentati al pubblico un centinaio di dipinti, oltre alle sculture e ad una speciale selezione di grafica.

“Un libro che ci parla degli altri e finisce per inse-gnarci parecchio su noi stessi” recita la quarta di copertina. E così è. Una serie di cartine dell'Europa e del Mondo illustrano i diversi pregiudizi che ogni popolo riserva ai paesi confinanti. Il risultato sono tante Europe, tanti Mondi, uno diverso dall'altro e tutti molto parziali, anche nel pregiudizio nazionale. Pur provando ad unire tutti insieme i pregiudizi non si ottiene il ritratto completo di nessun popolo, per-ché di fatto si tratta di approssimazioni, schizzi ap-pena abbozzati, caricature in definitiva. Ma l’autore, nato in Bulgaria, cresciuto in Germania e attualmen-te residente in Spagna, insomma un Europeo, riesce a presentarci un atlante sui generis molto diverten-te che certamente fà sorridere parecchio il lettore e, magari, lo induce a fare qualche riflessione sulle differenze e sul potere del comico.

Ogni angolo di mondo ha una storia, tante storie, da raccontare, tesori, bellezza, mistero ed anche mol-te difficili contraddizioni. Ma della maggior parte dei paesi se ne ignorano anche i principali elementi storiografici. Così è il caso dell’Azerbaigian, paese dell’Asia caucasica, poco conosciuto da noi Europei. Da questa ignoranza ne fanno le spese i tanti possi-bili interscambi culturali e i potenziali accordi com-merciali. Carlo Frappi, l’autore di questo agile volu-me edito da Sandro Teti, offre un testo valido come buona introduzione alla conoscenza di questo paese: ricostruendo un inquadramento storico ed un’intro-duzione geo-politica dell’Azerbaigian, fondamentali a colmare le più gravi lacune, Frappi delinea un pro-filo dello sviluppo economico e industriale del paese e delle sue relazioni, diplomatiche e commerciali con l’Italia.

Un racconto illustrato – pubblicato da Einaudi con le illustrazioni di Lorenzo Ceccotti – onirico, fiabesco. Il protagonista è un bambino, un fanciullo, che entra in una biblioteca alla ricerca di un libro e viene in-ghiottito in una dimensione che il lettore non riesce più a riconoscere come reale. La biblioteca, casa della cultura e del sapere, si trasforma in un labirinto, in cui il protagonista si perde e dove reale e immaginifi-co si confondono. Con il progredire della narrazione, aumenta il senso di inquietudine e il lettore precipita insieme al protagonista nella stessa dimensione allu-cinatoria. Co-protagonisti sono un vecchio bibliote-cario e il suo gregario, nomen omen, l’uomo-pecora. E proprio il personaggio mezzo uomo e mezzo pe-cora che, insieme all’atmosfera sospesa a tinte nere, ci porta con la mente ad un altro racconto, Le Meta-morfosi di Kafka, autore ben conosciuto dal maestro giapponese.

Un trattato sull’esistenza, ricco ma mai tedioso né ostico alla lettura, il cui titolo semplifica eccessivamente – Ven-totto domande per affrontare il futuro – restituendo l’imma-gine di un banale manuale sull’arte del vivere, che di fatto questo libro non è. Il testo ha il pregio di essere fruibile e denso allo stesso tempo, non ha nulla a che fare con letture new age che elargiscono consigli, bensì è un testo che induce a riflettere offrendo un punto di vista interes-sante e strutturato, che non ha la presunzione di essere il solo. L’autore, lo studioso inglese Theodore Zeldin, spiega: “Questo libro contiene ventotto domande e mi piacerebbe che i lettori possano rispondere alle stesse, suggerisco il modo di vedere le cose, ma le mie non sono delle verità. Non propongo nessuna ideologia, ma invi-to a provare ad esplorare la propria vita e quella altrui”, partendo dalla rimozione delle ipocrisie, pratica che ti fa avvicinare alla verità che spesso “è un diamante che riflette varie luci”.

“A book which talks about others and ends up teaching us a lot about ourselves” says the back cover. And so it does. A series of European and World maps illustrate the various prejudices which every population reserves for confining countries. The result is many Europes, many worlds, all different from the other and all very biased, even down to their own national prejudices. Although trying to unite all the prejudices you don’t get a complete portrait of any population, because after all these are approximations, sketches just sketched, caricatu-res to be defined. But the author, born in Bulgaria, grew up in Germany and now living in Spain, in other words very European, manages to present us with a sui generis Atlas, which is very funny and will certainly make you laugh lots, and maybe even make you reflect on the differences and the power of comedy.

Every corner of the world has a story, many stories to tell, treasures, beauty, mystery and also many difficult contradictions. But the majority of countries ignore even the principal histographical elements. This is the case for Azerbaijan, a country of causican Asia, not much known by us Europeans. To pay for this ignorance are the many possible cultural interchanges and potential commercial dealings. Cralo Frappi, the author of this agile volume edited by Sandro Teti, offers a text as a good introduction to get to know this country: moving along an historical background with a geo-political introduction to Azerbai-jan, fundamental to filling the biggest gaps. Frappi deline-ates a profile of the economic and industrial development of the country and it’s relations, diplomatic and commer-cial, with Italy.

An illustrated story – published by Einaudi with illu-strations by Lorenzo Ceccotti – it is dreamlike, fairytale like. The main character is a child, a young boy, who en-ters a library looking for a book and is then eaten up by a dimension which the reader is no longer able to see as real. The library, home of culture and knowledge, beco-mes a labyrinth, where the protagonist becomes lost and where reality and imagination fuse together. With the development of the narration, the sense of anxiety incre-ases and the reader falls, together with the character, in a hallucinatory dimension. Other main characters are an old librarian and his helper, Nomen Omen, the sheep-man. It is this character, half man, half sheep, which together with the suspense and gloomy feel, takes us to another sto-ry, the metamorphosis of Kafka, an author known by the Japanese master.

Essays about existence, rich but never tedious or hostile to read, the title of the book excessively oversimplifying them – The Hidden Treasures Of Life – it gives an image of a boring ma-nual on the art of living, which in fact this book is not. The text has the benefit of being easy to read and dense at the same time, it has nothing in common with new age texts which hand out advise, this is a text which provokes reflection by offering an interesting and well structured point of view, but without the assumption of being the only one. The author, the English Scho-lar Theodore Zeldin, explains: “This book contains twenty-eight questions and I would like readers to answers these, I suggest ways of looking at things, but my ways, not the truth. I don’t propone any ideology, but I invite to explore one’s own life and that of others”, starting from the removal of hypocrisy, practice which helps to get closer to the truth which often “is a diamond reflecting different angles of light”.

Call It What It Is rappresenta per Ben Harper un ritorno alle origini. A differenza dell’ultimo Childhood Home (2014), infatti, questa volta l’artista californiano non è da solo. Ad accompagnarlo, a distanza di ben otto anni dal loro ultimo lavoro insieme, c’è la sua storica band, gli Innocent Criminals. Con loro ha esordito nel 1995, realiz-zando alcuni dei dischi più importanti della sua carriera: da Fight for Your Mind fino a Life time, passando per The Will to Live, Burn to Shine e Diamonds on the Inside. “Fare musica nuovamente con The Innocent Criminals è una mia priorità in questo momento”, aveva dichiarato Harper due anni fa alla rivista Rolling Stones: ora l’attesa è finalmente terminata. Anticipato dal singolo Pink Bal-loon, Call It What It Is è un album forte e chiaro come il suo titolo, nato dalla collaborazione vincente di un gruppo di musicisti, ma soprattutto di grandi amici.

Un romanzo, Il Paese dei coppoloni, un film, Nel Paese dei coppoloni, e ora un doppio album, Canzoni della cupa, come terza tappa di un viaggio in un mondo perduto. Ad accompagnarci in questa riscoperta c’è un perfetto canta-storie, Vinicio Capossela, che torna dopo cinque lunghis-simi anni di assenza. Suddiviso in Lato della Polvere, che contiene brani dedicati alla terra, e Lato in Ombra, in cui invece sono il presagio e l’inquietudine a farla da padrone, Canzoni della cupa è un’opera che attinge dai canti popo-lari della nostra tradizione contadina. Ci sono voluti ben dieci anni di lavoro, ma il risultato è il meraviglioso raccon-to di un universo estinto, da cui ci siamo sradicati, ma a cui sentiamo di appartenere. Una narrazione in musica che non si riduce al semplice canto d’amore per la propria terra, ma che ha, anzi, l’obiettivo di condurci oltre la realtà attraverso il mito, il sogno e l’incontro con personaggi straordinari.

There is a high chance that you may think of it as another mar-keting ploy. However, just reading the words of You and I, the posthumous collection of Jeff Buckley, bodes well. The album, in fact, doesn’t only have covers, among which stand out Just Like a Woman of Bob Dylan and The Boy with a Thorn in His Side by The Smiths, but it also gives us the first recording of Grace, a masterpiece that gave him worldwide fame, and the unreleased Dream of You and I, which inspired the title of the disc. This album is the fruit of extensive research done in the archives of Sony, which has decided to make the valuable material available to the public in view of the twentieth anniversary of the artist’s premature death, on May 29, 1997 in the waters of the Wolf River in Mississippi. Ten tracks which have never been heard before, make us appreciate Buckley, not only as a musician but also as a performer with a unique voice and no match yet.

Radio Silence, anticipated by the so named single, is the highly anticipated new album by the English singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, James Blake. Although the release was planned for late 2015, the album justifies its delay because it presents itself as the sequel to Overgrown, album that won him world fame and earned him a Mercury Prize and a Grammy Awards nomination. Success is not easy to replicate, but Blake tries with a disc full of collaborations, from Bon Iver to Kanye West, and characterised by a continually evolving sound, without however betraying his unique electro-pop label. What more, as a DJ in the British capital clubs to a real icon of electronic music, the twenty six year old Londoner has come a long way. We are ready to follow his next move.

Call It What It Is reppresents a return to his origins for Ben Harper. Unlike his last Childhood Home (2014), this time the Californian artist is not solo. To accompany him, eight years from their last recordings together, is his histo-rical band, the Innocent Criminals. He began with them in 1995, producing some of the most important albums of his career: from Fight for Your Mind to Life Time, through to The Will to Live, Burn to Shine and Diamonds on the Inside. “Creating music with the Innocent Criminals again is my priority right now”, Harper declared to the Rolling Stones magazine two years ago: now the wait is finally over. Anticipated by the single Pink Balloon, Call It What It Is is a clear and strong album like the title, created by the winning collaboration of a group of musicians but above all, great friends.

A novel, Il Paese dei coppoloni, a movie, Nel Paese dei coppoloni, and now a double album, Canzoni della cupa, as the third leg of a trip to a lost world. To take us on this journey is a perfect singing storyteller, Vinicio Capossela, who returns after five long years of absence. Divided into Lato della Polvere (Side of the dust), which contains songs dedicated to earth, and Lato in Ombra (Side in the Shadow), which instead have presage and disquietude as themes, Canzoni della cupa (Songs of Grim) is an album that draws on the folk songs of our country’s traditions. It took ten years of work, but the result is the wonderful story of an extinct universe, from which we uprooted, but to which we feel we still belong. A story through music that is not reduced to the simple song of love for land, but which has the aim of leading us beyond reality through myth, dreams and meetings with extraordinary characters.

Il rischio che si pensi all’ennesima operazione di marke-ting è molto alto. Tuttavia, già la sola lettura delle tracce di You and I, raccolta postuma di Jeff Buckley, fa ben spe-rare. L’album, infatti, non contiene solo cover, tra le quali spiccano Just like a woman di Bob Dylan e The boy with a thorn in his side degli Smiths, ma ci regala anche la prima registrazione di Grace, capolavoro che gli ha donato la fama mondiale, e l’inedito Dream of you and I, a cui si ispira il titolo del disco. Questo lavoro è il frutto di lunghe ricerche compiute negli archivi della Sony, che ha deciso di rendere pubblico il prezioso materiale in vista del ven-tennale dalla prematura scomparsa dell’artista, avvenuta il 29 maggio 1997 nelle acque del Wolf River, in Mississipi. Dieci tracce, mai ascoltate prima, che ci fanno apprezzare Buckley non soltanto come musicista, ma anche come interprete dalla voce unica e ancora oggi senza eredi.

Ed è lì che nasce una sorprendente amicizia tra due anime che non potrebbero essere più diverse e che spinge le donne ad una tragicomica fuga dalla struttura, trascinandole in un vortice di allegria e vitalità. “Una passeggiata fuori da una struttura clinica che si occupa di donne con problemi in quel manicomio a cielo aperto che è l’Italia”, ha spiegato lo stesso Virzì che torna a girare nella sua Toscana dopo il fortunato “La prima cosa bella”. La scelta di affidare a Valeria Bruni Tedeschi e a Micaela Ramazzotti i ruoli delle due protagoniste, è stata molto semplice: sul set del Capitale Umano le attrici si erano incontrate ed il regista aveva notato una certa alchimia.Il film, scritto con Francesca Archibugi, più che raccontare una bizzarra fuga alla Telma e Louise, ha come tema il labile confine tra il sano e l’insano. Un equilibrio sottile e forse invisibile.

The film brings to the screen the autobiographical book: The Press, The President, and The Privilege of Power, written by Mary Mapes Truth and Duty, where the established journalist and producer of CBS tells of how she was involved in one of the most bitter controversies in American journalism. The woman receives a tip from a source who claims to have documents proving that President Bush received preferential treatment on his National Guard duty, he was helped to avoid service in the Vietnam War. On the basis of these documents the television network broadcasts a 60 minute slot, quickly causing a violent whirlwind of controversy as to the truth of this information from the broadcast. The media pillory reaches such an echo as to force the channel to dismiss many workers and journalist Dan Rather, to resign. Beyond the story, full of twists and turns, the film emphasises the change in the way of doing journalism, how investigations are disappearing due to costs, danger, the difficult relationship with power and how, with the soaring of the Internet, anyone has the opportunity to spread their opinions, sometimes so aggressively and out of control.

That’s where a surprising friendship strikes up between the two very different souls and which brings the women to a tragicomic escape from the place, dragging them into a whirlwind of joy and vitality. “A walk outside from a clinical place that takes care of women with problems to that open air asylum which is Italy”, explained Virzi who returns to film in his native Tuscany after the successful “The First Beautiful Thing”. The decision to give the role of protagonists to Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Micaela Ramazzotti was very simple: the actresses had met on the set of Human Capital and the director had noticed a certain alchemy. The film, written with Francesca Archibugi, rather than telling of a bizarre runaway like Telma and Louise it has as a theme the fine line between sane and unsane. A balance which is subtle and perhaps invisible.

La pellicola porta sul grande schermo il libro autobiografico scritto da Mary Mapes Truth and Duty: The Press, The President, and The Privilege of Power, in cui l’affermata giornalista e produttrice della CBS racconta di come fu coinvolta in una delle più aspre controversie del giornalismo americano. La donna ottiene una soffiata da una fonte che sostiene di possedere i documenti comprovanti che il Presidente Bush ricevette un trattamento privilegiato nella Guardia Nazionale,che gli evitò il servizio nella guerra del Vietnam. Sulla scorta di questi documenti, la rete televisiva manda in onda un servizio di 60 minuti e subito un violento turbine di polemiche circa la veridicità di queste informazioni si abbatte sull’emittente. La gogna mediatica raggiunge una tale eco da costringere il canale a molti licenziamenti e il giornalista Dan Rather a rassegnare le dimissioni. Al di là della storia, ricca di colpi di scena, quel che il film sottolinea è il cambiamento del modo di fare giornalismo, di come stia sparendo l’inchiesta per motivi legati ai costi, al pericolo, al difficile rapporto con i poteri forti e di come, con l’avvento di Internet, sia stata data la possibilità a chiunque di diffondere le proprie opinioni, talvolta in modo aggressivo e privo di controllo.

UNA GUIDA RAPIDA PER AIUTAREIL PASSEGGEROPer proteggervi contro la nuova minaccia derivante dagli esplosivi liquidi, l’Unione Europea ha adottato nuove regole di sicurezza che limitano le quantità di liquidi che possono essere introdotti nelle aree sterili. Tali regole si applicano nei confronti tutti i passeggeri in partenza dagli aeroporti dell’Unione Europea verso qualsiasi destinazione. Ciò significa che ai controlli di sicurezza, il passeggero e il relativo bagaglio a mano devono essere controllati per verificare la presenza di liquidi. Comunque, le nuove regole non limitano la quantità di liquidi che possono essere acquistati presso gli esercizi commerciali situati oltre il punto di controllo del titolo di viaggio od a bordo di un aeromobile di compagnia appartenente all’Unione Europea. Le nuove regole si applicano a partire da lunedì 6 novembre 2006, in tutti gli ae-roporti dell’Unione Europea, in Norvegia, Islanda e Svizzera a meno di eventuali modifiche.

prevenire problemi circolatori.

Prolonged sitting in a fixed position can make you feel uncom-fortable in the plane. Every few hours, stretch your arms and legs or carry out some easy exercises* suggested below.

Consumate pasti leggeri, mangiate con moderazione e limitare

bevande gassate, tè e caffè.

Eat a light meal and moderate you intake of fizzy drinks, tea and coffee.

Bevete molta acqua naturale, meglio se in piccole quantità e

spesso.

Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated.Moderate il consumo di bevande alcoliche, poiché queste sono

assorbite più facilmente dal corpo ad alta quota a causa della

bassa pressione dell’aria all’interno della cabina.

Moderate your intake of alcohol.

In caso di permanenza prolungata a bordo è consigliato sosti-

tuire le lenti a contatto con degli occhiali per evitare irritazioni

oculari. Togliete sempre le lenti a contatto prima di dormire.
