Three new records We had ambitious plans for 2011 – and we actually surpassed our targets. By setting new records for unit sales, revenue and earnings, Mercedes-Benz had three reasons to celebrate. Our success is based on strong products: The S-Class and C-Class sedans were once again market leaders. We also set a new sales record in the E-Class segment – thanks in no small part to our new CLS. Our other new models were also very well received – be it the C-Class Coupé, B- or M-Class.

Six new models We continue to work hard on the expansion of our product portfolio. We will launch six new models in 2012: our sports car icon – the SL; the most dynamic A-Class to date; the CLS Shooting Brake; and three new SUV models. We are also making good progress with emission-free driving: With the new electric smart we are the first premium manufacturer to have an electric model “for everyone” in our model range.

One ambition With the best products and the strongest brand, we aim to be number one in premium-segment unit sales - as well as in all other categories – by the end of this decade at the latest. This ambition is backed up by our “Mercedes-Benz 2020” growth strategy. The global automotive market will continue to be a growth market for a long time to come. We intend to participate in that growth – and to an above-average extent.

That’s why our game plan for this year is to stay on the offensive. I look forward to presenting our continued progress to you here in 2013!

Daimler AG is one of the world’s most successful automotive companies. The brands. Mercedes-Benz Cars.

For the past 125 years, Mercedes-Benz’ pioneering work has been shaping the future of mobility. The star symbolizes the perfect union of fascination and responsibility in a way that is unequaled by any other trademark in the automotive world. True to Gottlieb Daimler’s maxim “The best or nothing,” Mercedes-Benz is using its great innovative power to continually define new milestones in terms of vehicle drive systems, safety, comfort, and design.

Last year Mercedes-Benz celebrated its unique heritage in line with the slogan “125! years of innovation.” With six new vehicle models, the brand also impressively demonstrated that its innovative power is as strong as ever as it heads down the road to accident-free, zero-emission driving. In 2011 Mercedes launched the all-new SLK, C-Class Coupé, M-Class, B-Class, and SLS AMG Roadster, as well as the updated C-Class. Each of these vehicles sets benchmarks in its segment for safety, comfort, and efficiency. With this product offensive, Mercedes-Benz laid the groundwork for the future — and concluded its anniversary year with the best sales result in the com-pany’s history. Sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles reached an all-time high of around 1.26 million automobiles, representing an increase of eight percent compared with the figure for 2010.

With a view to further improving sales, Mercedes-Benz will system-atically forge ahead with its product offensive this year. The brand is once again launching six new models on the market and raising the bar for sportiness, comfort, and sustainability even higher. As Dr. Dieter Zetsche put it at the traditional New Year’s reception in Detroit in January 2012, “We are making green cars cooler and cool cars greener.” A great example of this approach is the new SL Roadster, which celebrated its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the SL series. The new SL is made almost entirely of aluminum — a first in the SL’s history — and weighs up to 140 kilograms less than the previous model. Less weight translates into better handling and up to 29 percent lower fuel consumption. And thanks to the new hybrid models E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID and E 400 HYBRID, Mercedes-Benz is also setting new effi- ciency benchmarks for luxury-class business vehicles. In fact, the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is the world’s most fuel-efficient luxury-class

car, consuming only 4.2 liters of fuel per 100 km. The introduction of these two E-Class models marks the launch of a hybrid offensive.

Additional exciting premieres will follow. For example, the new SL Roadster, the new CLS Shooting Brake, and the new A-Class will under- score Mercedes-Benz’ leading role when it comes to innovative vehicle concepts and pioneering design. With its uniquely sporty focus in design and technology, the new generation of the A-Class will open a new chapter in the compact car segment and reach out to new target groups. Mercedes-Benz is also launching an offensive in the SUV segment, where it will introduce new generations of the GLK and the legendary G-Class, as well as an all-new GL.

For Mercedes-Benz, shaping the automotive future also means creating a comprehensive system of connectivity within the automobile. With the development of innovative telematics and infotainment systems, the star brand is striving to closely interlink consumer electronics with mobility. In many Mercedes-Benz vehicle models, the COMAND Online telematics system already offers convenient and secure Internet access. The system includes cloud-based Mercedes-Benz apps, which enable users to integrate Google Local Search (including Google Street View and Panoramio) and Facebook. Thanks to COMAND Online, motorists can for the first time transmit customized Google Maps routes directly into their vehicles. But thatʼs only the beginning. With its @yourCOMAND telematics strategy, Mercedes-Benz is planning to turn cars into mobile communications centers that are capable of providing access to all of today’s cutting-edge media and services.

In early January 2012, Mercedes-Benz’ DICE (Dynamic & Intuitive Control Experience) sculpture gave visitors to the Consumer Elec-tronics Show in Las Vegas a visionary glimpse of the interactive, intuitive, and secure user experience that drivers of premium auto-mobiles will enjoy in the future. DICE demonstrates how bi-directional interaction will turn vehicles into thinking mobility partners. The intelligent car communicates not only with the driver but also with other road users and its entire environment. As a result, all of the relevant information can be immediately evaluated and implemented while driving. The windshield becomes a brilliant head-up display, while the dashboard is turned into a display band. Here, digital data related to the vehicle’s real-life environment is displayed — as is infor-mation on points of interest, friends, pedestrians, and other vehicles. Users can interact with this feature naturally by means of gestures. To make this feat possible, Mercedes-Benz combines augmented

reality and natural gesture recognition. The result provides humans with a completely new and fascinating way of communicating with their environment. When passing a club, for example, drivers merely have to make a simple hand gesture to transmit the music into their vehicles via a live stream. At intersections, approaching vehicles are virtually displayed on the windshield in order to prevent possibly dangerous situations from arising.

However, the premium automobile brand from Stuttgart is not only developing technological solutions for networked communications; it is also getting extensively involved with social and digital media. The focus here is on open, dialogue-oriented offers instead of a mere presence on the Web. In order to successfully address contem-porary-minded target groups, the brand created the new platform “mb! by Mercedes-Benz” and The Avant/Garde Diaries, an inter-view magazine. Mercedes-Benz already had more than six million fans on Facebook in March 2012 and also had a successful start in Google’s new social network Google+. The brand is responding to the increased use of mobile terminals by introducing many informative and entertaining smartphone apps. Because it has been optimized to handle iPads, iPhones, and Mercedes-Benz COMAND Online, for example, the mobile portal now makes it possible for users to directly access attractive Mercedes-Benz content.

Mercedes-Benz’ unparalleled design expertise, which has resulted in the creation of innumerable design icons, is renowned the world over. That’s why in addition to creating the designs for automobiles, designers at Mercedes-Benz also apply their talents in the service of other products. Mercedes-Benz Style’s portfolio ranges from transportation-related products and furniture to lifestyle products and industrial design items. Last year, for example, the designers created the interior of Eurocopter’s EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style helicopter, an exclusive TAG Heuer watch, and elegant earphones for the street fashion brand WeSC. Mercedes-Benz is also underscoring its commit- ment to a distinctive style and trend-setting design through its involve-ment in fashion activities worldwide, and the company is steadily becoming more active in this area. In 2011, for example, the brand co-launched the Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week in Beijing. And,

following a successful five-year run, it also signed a contract that extends its role as the name sponsor of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin until 2014. Overall, the star brand is presenting itself at major fashion events in more than 30 countries on all continents.

Mercedes-Benz is living up to its social responsibility by extensively supporting sports activities. One example of that is the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, through which over 1.5 million disad-vantaged children and teenagers receive support thanks to more than 90 social sports projects worldwide. In addition, the Laureus Academy honors the world’s best athletes every year with the re-nowned Laureus World Sports Awards. This year the awards ceremony was held in London, the site of the upcoming Summer Olympics. In Germany, Mercedes-Benz is a long-time sponsor of the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe foundation and has been active as a national sponsor since 2008.

In 2011 Mercedes-Benz once again attracted attention with its intense involvement in sports activities in Germany. During the women’s World Cup in Germany, Mercedes-Benz joined together with the men’s national soccer team, Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador Franz Beckenbauer, and millions of fans to support the national women’s soccer team with the “Together to the Star” campaign. “The Pulse of a New Generation” is the slogan of a campaign designed to drum up support for the men’s national team, which is coached by Joachim Löw, at this year’s Euro 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine. The brand has been a partner of the German Soccer Federation since 1972 and its general sponsor since 1990. In 2011, this partnership was extended for another seven years on the occa-sion of a soccer match between Germany and Brazil in Stuttgart.

Mercedes-Benz is also very active in the area of golf, where it serves as the exclusive automotive partner for three of the four major tour-naments and for the Ryder Cup 2012. In addition, Mercedes-Benz is involved in the sponsorship of tennis and equestrian sports. In 2011 Mercedes-Benz also launched The Avant/Garde Diaries, a creative platform on which participants discuss current and socially relevant topics related to art, fashion, music, innovation, trends, culture, and automobiles. In a three-day event hosted by fashion designer Raf Simons, international avant-garde artists and trendsetters met in Berlin to discuss current and future developments with experts and the general public. One of the festival’s highlights was the artistic presentation of the Mercedes-Benz Concept A-CLASS, which

impressively showed that inquisitiveness and a delight in overcoming existing limitations are key driving forces behind innovation and progress at Mercedes-Benz as well as elsewhere. In 2012 The Avant/Garde Diaries will be held in Los Angeles at the end of April. The event will be hosted by Michael Diamond (Mike D) from the Beastie Boys.

A great idea continues its successful run. Like no other brand, smart stands for innovation, functionality, and a zest for life. smart products stand out due to their unconventional design, city-friendly function-ality, and high technological standards. This makes them the logical expression of smart’s urban mobility strategy — for conventional drive systems and electric ones. In line with the slogan “We need dif-ferent cars, but want to remain mobile,” smart is the world’s smallest automotive think tank — and it’s a very successful one. Sales of around 102,000 units worldwide in 2011 (an increase of 4.6 percent compared to 2010) demonstrate that smart’s concept of combining environmentally compatible urban mobility with driving pleasure has been a resounding success.

In 2011 the smart forvision concept vehicle caused an especially big stir. Unveiled at the IAA 2011 auto show, the car combines futuristic design and technologies devoted to energy efficiency, lightweight engineering, and temperature management. In other words, the vehicle is yet another milestone on the road to holistic electric mobility.

The brand is continuing its success story in 2012, and right at the start of the year smart once again turned the automotive world on its head by redefining the look of the urban pickup truck. With a sense of humor, the smart for-us clearly states that it is the right car for young people and the young at heart who want to be active while minimizing emissions and the road space they require. At the same time, this smart concept car for the first time translates the pickup truck’s practical loading concept into a contemporary urban idea that is in tune with the 21st century.

Thanks to the market launch of the third-generation smart fortwo electric drive and the smart ebike, electric mobility is now available to everyone. The smart fortwo is being comprehensively updated this year, and the “sharpred” limited edition model was presented in February.

The car2go mobility service is also becoming increasingly popular. By April 2012, around 3,500 smart fortwo vehicles are being suc-cessfully used by more than 75,000 customers in 11 cities around the world: Ulm, Hamburg, and Düsseldorf in Germany, Austin/TX,

San Diego/CA, Washington D.C., and Portland/OR in the United States, Vancouver in Canada, Vienna in Austria, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and Lyon in France. In 2012, car2go will also be launched in Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany, and Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Highlights» In 2011 car2go offered its first all-electric fleets, which were intro-

duced in San Diego and Amsterdam. In each of these cities, 300 smart electric drives have ushered in electric car-sharing. Following its success in 2010, smart once again won the Los Angeles Design Challenge in 2011. The smart 341 Parkour is a revolutionary super all-rounder with a completely transparent passenger compartment that offers outstanding all-round vision. The vehicle can drive con-ventionally along roads, climb up the facades of skyscrapers, and even fly.

» The international smart future minds award was presented at the final event of the smart urban stage series in Frankfurt. The award was given to The People’s Supermarket sustainable food cooperative in London. In addition to featuring award presenta-tions for pioneering projects, the events also attracted more than 14,000 visitors who took the opportunity to test drive the smart fortwo electric drive.

» During the ten years prior to 2011, the world’s largest smart enthu-siast meeting, smart times, always took place in Austria. However, last year it was held in another European country for the first time. For four whole days, fans celebrated their beloved smart car in Riccione, an Italian beach resort on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. In 2012, smart fans will get together in Antwerp, Belgium.

For more than ten years, Maybach has defined the standards at the very peak of the luxury sedan segment. At the same time, it has continued the tradition of the legendary Maybach automobiles, which were among the most outstanding vehicles produced in Germany or elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s. “Only create the very best from the very best; an automobile which meets every wish and is characterized by the most distinguished elegance and power,” declared a Maybach brochure in 1930, describing the brand’s aims, which have remained unchanged to this very day.

To coincide with the automobile’s 125th anniversary, Maybach presented the unusual, one-of-a-kind Edition 125! at the IAA 2011 in Frankfurt. The vehicle showcased exquisite new possibilities for customizing high-end sedans. Highlights included the contour lighting and the laser-engraved light motif, which features a double-M in a curved triangle in the front armrest.

Maybach presented another unusual customizing project at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. In cooperation with the Swiss jewelry and watch manufacturer de GRISOGONO, Maybach unveiled a diamond-studded 62 S sedan to members of the international jet set and celebrities from the movie and show business.

Maybach also set new highlights in 2011 as a promoter of first-rate international art. At the beginning of the year, the brand became the first automotive brand worldwide to serve as an official partner of the famous Louvre Museum in Paris. Thanks to this partnership, changing exhibitions of sculptures by internationally renowned artists will be staged on the presentation area underneath the world-famous glass pyramid during the next three years. The presentations were kicked off by the leading British contemporary artist Tony Cragg, who displayed a new sculpture.

At the Art Biennale in Venice, Maybach supported the large solo exhibition of works by Julian Schnabel. At the show, the world-famous artist unveiled to a global public his automobile sculpture The Ones You Didn’t Write, which he created in cooperation with his protégé Vahakn Arslanian. At the end of 2011, the Daimler Board of Management decided to serve the top-of-the-line luxury segment with three additional Mercedes-Benz S-Class variants in the future. As a result, the Maybach brand will be discontinued in 2013, when the new S-Class will be presented. By then more than 3,000 vehicles will have been delivered to customers. Local zero-emission driving: electric vehicles with fuel cells or batteries» Electric vehicles are powered by an electric motor. The electricity is

supplied either by a rechargeable battery or directly by an onboard fuel cell.

» Both fuel cell and battery electric vehicles are quiet, highly efficient, and produce no local emissions.

» Daimler has put four series-produced vehicle models with electric drive systems on the road since late 2010.

» The series production of our fuel cell-powered electric vehicle, the B-Class F-CELL, and of the battery-powered second-generation smart fortwo electric drive began in late 2009.

» They were followed in 2010 by two further battery-powered electric vehicles, the Vito E-CELL and the A-Class E-CELL.

» This year we will begin series production of the third-generation smart fortwo electric drive, which will be offered in more than 30 markets.

» The market launch of the smart ebike in the first half of 2012 will add a two-wheeler to our range of electric products.

» In 2013 we will begin producing a small batch of our first electric sports car, the SLS AMG E-CELL.

» It will be followed in 2014 by two electric vehicles based on the new B-Class. One of the models will feature a fuel cell drive, while the other will be equipped with a range extender.

» The new F 125! research vehicle provides a visionary glimpse of the automobile of the far future — a vehicle with an electric range of 1,000 kilometers.

Hybridization of vehicles with efficient combustion engines» We have developed a modular hybrid system to meet customer

requirements with tailored solutions. Hybrid modules of various performance classes and batteries can be combined with our most frequently produced gasoline and diesel engines. The features here range from the user-friendly start-stop function to energy boosting/recovery and purely electric driving. Another option is the plug-in HYBRID, in which batteries can be recharged at normal power outlets in order to increase their electric range.

» This development was kicked off in 2009 by the S 400 HYBRID with a lithium-ion battery and by the ML 450 HYBRID, which was designed specifically for the U.S. market. These vehicles are being followed in 2012 by the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID, which is initially targeted at the European market, and the E 400 HYBRID, which will be launched on the U.S. market and then will also be offered in other countries such as China and Japan. In addition, we are rolling out hybrid technology in all of our other core production series.

» The future of the modular hybrid system is revealed by the Vision S 500 Plug-in HYBRID, the first “three-liter car” in the upper-range segment. Under NEDC conditions, this near-series model consumes only 3.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers while emitting only 74 g of CO2 per kilometer.*

» The next generation of the S-Class will include a plug-in HYBRID.

» We have already done research on some future assistance systems with independent functions (e.g. evasion assistance and a traffic jam or construction site assistance system) and are now developing them to the series production stage.

» As part of its efforts to extend the Mercedes-Benz product range in the premium compact car segment (the successor generation of the current A- and B-Class, encompassing five models instead of the previous two), Daimler decided in 2008 to increase its production capacity by expanding the Rastatt plant for €600 million and construc-ting a new facility in Kecskemét, Hungary, for €800 million. The two plants are part of a production network that manufactures the new generation of Mercedes-Benz compact cars.

Positioning» In 2003 Mercedes-Benz unveiled the CLS, which created a new vehicle

category that for the first time combined the elegance and dynamism of a coupe with the comfort and functionality of a sedan. For many years the CLS was the only four-door coupe in its class. Around 32,500 units have been sold to customers worldwide since October 2004.
