This is the presentation given by Vidhya Alakeson in response to the keynote speech by Elizabeth Truss MP at the event: Meeting the childcare challenge for working parents, held at Resolution Foundation on 13th February 2014.

In a keynote speech, Elizabeth Truss MP (Minister for Education and Childcare) set out the government's agenda for meeting the challenge of high-quality and affordable childcare for working parents.

Some mothers want to work more Survey with Mumsnet of nearly 2000 mothers with at least 1 child under 10 1 in 5 working mothers want to work more 10 hours on average Nearly 4 out of 10 non-working mothers want to work 23 hours on average Lower earning mums more likely to want to work #futureofchildcare 6. Affordability still the biggest barrier to work.. ..Parents are equally supportive of additional support delivered through either the demand or supply side #futureofchildcare 7. Immediate priorities.. Fix work incentives for low paid mothers in Universal Credit - 200 million Current government proposal for 85% support85% support for all working parents #futureofchildcare 8. Immediate priorities.. Ensure that parents can access their existing entitlements flexibly before expanding them Do more with employers to create real flexibility #futureofchildcare 9. Longer term priorities.. Create a new 10 year vision for childcare where are we headed?
