Welcome To Room 5

Page 2: Meet the teacher presentation

Appropriate level reading book will be sent home each night Monday – Thursday.

Children need to read aloud to an adult each night.

Reading strategies - sound out the words.- did that make sense?- miss out unknown word,

read on and then re-read thesentence.

Page 3: Meet the teacher presentation

Okay for your child to read a page and then you to read a page as this encourages them and doesn’t make the reading too overwhelming.

Reluctant readers – child reads a sentence you read a sentence, they read a page you read a page, they read a paragraph you read a paragraph. Gradually build up the amount they are reading.

Each Friday your child will write a spelling list in their Home-School book.

They will be tested on the following Friday.

Please encourage your child to learn 2 words

a night as this makes the task less daunting.

Depending on their ability your child will have between 5 and 10 words to learn. The number of words is negotiable.

Beginning Week 4, a fortnightly homework sheet will be sent home.

This will contain 2 language activities and a basic maths activity.

Please help your child complete the activities and return it by the due date.

Encourage your child to complete a little bit each night.

Each Friday the newsletter for the next week will be sent home ie Week 4’s newsletter will be sent home on the Friday of Week 3.

The next week’s spelling list will be written in the newsletter.

Please make sure the Home-School book is returned to school each Friday.

An individual ticket system that rewards positive behaviour and attempts to diminish negative behaviour.

A class reward chart which is signed whenever the class, as an whole, is on task, have worked well etc.

Page 8: Meet the teacher presentation

A ticket is drawn every Friday and the winning child can choose a small reward.

Children who keep a ‘clean record’ during the week receive 15 minutes ‘free choosing’ time on a Friday afternoon.

When the class chart is full, we celebrate with a shared lunch.

Page 9: Meet the teacher presentation

Negative behaviour results in lost minutes at the next morning tea or lunch time as well as during the ‘free choosing’ session on Friday.

Negative behaviour - verbal warning

- name on the board

- tick against the name

- 1 tick = 2 minutes

During the year we will be learning to play a number of simple tunes on the recorder.

Each child needs to have their own recorder.

Local shops $13.5. From school $9.

Please do not buy cheap recorders from the Warehouse etc because they sound terrible.

To allow children to settle down to work.

Red – no talking for 3 to 5 minutes – if do then start again.

Yellow – quiet whispers about your work.

Green – normal indoor voice.

Page 13: Meet the teacher presentation

Bringing personal belonging and special toys to school is discouraged because accidents do happen and things may get broken.

If children do bring toys, games etc to school, they are responsible for them.

Scruffy, Pinky or Simba (Room 5’s soft toys) and an exercise book.

Please help your child write 1 or 2 sentences about what they did with the toy during the evening and draw a relevant picture

The toy and the book need to be returned to school the next day, so that your child can read their story to the class.

Page 15: Meet the teacher presentation

Some time during the year your child will bring home a VIP sheet.

The sheet asks them about their favouritecolour, favourite movie, pets etc.

Please help your child to complete the form and return it to school on Monday of the next week, when they will read it out to the class.
