FEBRUARY 17, 2017 | VOLUME 17 | ISSUE 7 MEET THE LATEST SPIRIT OF MERCY AWARD WINNER CONGRATULATIONS TO JOSE BORROMEO, M.D., the latest Spirit of Mercy Award winner! As a vascular surgeon at Iowa Heart Center since 2007, clinicians and staff who work closely with Dr. Borromeo say he lives the Mercy Values on a daily basis, and he’s as comfortable at a patient’s bedside as he is in surgery. Colleagues also describe Dr. Borromeo as a physician who blends clinical excellence with compassion and empathy on a daily basis. Dr. Borromeo is frequently involved in the complete care of the patient, including helping with wound care and drawing labs, if needed. Staff say this meets the needs of the patient and helps everyone in the process. “He helps the 7 South staff function as a team,” explained Dr. Borromeo’s colleagues. “We have a direct role and input in each patient’s care.” Patients and families recognize and appreciate Dr. Borromeo’s compassion and patience. Recently a family member shared Dr. Borromeo was very helpful during a serious situation. He advised the patient’s family that emergency surgery was needed for their father. A family member indicated they were concerned he might not survive. They said Dr. Borromeo took time to answer their questions and he called their mom — spending considerable time on the phone with her to help in making their decision. The surgery was performed and went well. The child shared, “I truly don’t think my dad would be here today if it was not for Dr. Borromeo. He is amazing.” When Dr. Borromeo does get away from work, he enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two children. Thank you Dr. Borromeo for all you do for Mercy and the individuals and communities we have the privilege to serve. Contrary to popular belief, Heart Month isn’t just for adults. Pediatric heart surgery patients in Mercy Children’s Hospital & Clinics’ Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) celebrate their super hero powers all year with special capes they receive for demonstrating bravery. The capes, which are provided by Dr. Hockmuth, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, and made by Kathy Hoffman, the mother of Dr. Hockmuth’s nurse, Jaime Davis, are personalized on the back with a heart and each patients’ first name initial. Initiatives such as the red capes, and the red hats donated to babies earlier this month, are dedicated to educating the public about congenital heart defects, the leading birth defect, affecting approximately 40,000 babies born every year in the United States. RED CAPES BRING AWARENESS TO CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS Jose Borromeo, M.D.

To create a more comfortable and private environment for our patients and guests, the hallway on the east side of Medical Imaging – between medical imaging and surgery – will close to guest and public traffic in the coming weeks. New automatic doors will be installed on each end of the hallway with signage to redirect guests to the west hallway. The hallway closure is outlined in the map below.

Staff transporting patients in wheelchairs and on gurneys through this area (e.g., to and from the emergency department, surgery, radiation oncology and cath lab) should use the east, restricted hallway.

Thank you for helping us provide a Remarkable Mercy Experience!
