HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE

CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION

STAGES?

RESEARCH + PLANNING •  I have used a number of new media technologies whilst researching

and creating my short film; to start with I researched current media products out there such as music videos and films, mainly on YouTube

•  Created in 2005, YouTube is a very new technology yet has more than "1 billion unique users visiting each month". It was important to be able to use this so I could research and compare existing films and videos as well as being able to upload my own film so it was accessible for everyone

•  Despite receiving negative feedback about certain elements of YouTube it is the biggest and only video sharing site - meaning it has no strong competition - so the creators don't have to worry about losing users

•  This is the first website we've had like this and as it is currently the second most used site as of January 2014, only behind Google, (who own YouTube as a subsidiary corporation anyway) this shows how the media technologies have changed, now being able to bring us technology like this

SOCIAL NETWORKING •  Another commonly used technology in this was that of social

networking sites. I used sites like Tumblr in my research of current films and Facebook for audience feedback, as in doing this I could target the typical audience I needed

•  I posted a link to my survey about target audience on Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook, meaning I generated responses of the kind of people who regularly use these sites

•  The majority of people who answered were female, 18 or above and regularly watched films. Using sites like these exposes you to films through the eyes of passionate people who love them and want to share them, making them ideal for responses to my questions

•  Tumblr and Twitter are websites aimed at sharing and talking about what you think, whilst Facebook makes everything easily accessible.

WEB 2.0 •  Before web 2.0 - the growth of social networking and user-generated

content - we had no way to instantly upload, share and discuss products and ideas online

•  Now everything we do is instant and online straightaway, meaning it was easy to gain any information about films and psychological aspects whenever I wanted

•  Marketing and research in the film industry was a lot more difficult before we had access to this technology, when they had to rely on 'word of mouth' advertising or placing film posters everywhere

•  Quick, instant access to existing products online means we can quickly research and compare other films, making changes to ours as we need to.

CONSTRUCTION •  Whilst creating my product I used the combination of a Canon DSLR

camera and Sony video camera to film, storing the footage on an SD card

•  Before these kind of products people would've used 35mm print projection to capture film. The use of digital technology means it's quick and easy to do, and we can instantly play back and delete any footage we don't need

•  Digital storage methods are a lot better now as they are cheaper, easier to use and don't degrade over time like film will. There is also a risk of film being permanently destroyed by fire, as film is extremely flammable

•  It is also easier to edit digital film; I taught myself to use Apple iMovie HD to edit together my film which was a quick and easy process

•  This is known as a non-linear editing system, as it can edit footage without destroying the original film. Before the use of programs like this editing used to be done by using a cutting copy – a positive copy of the film negative – and cutting and pasting pieces of it together

•  It is clearly a lot easier and quicker to use editing software nowadays like iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Premier Pro.

•  Throughout my film I used the splitting clips feature a lot, so being able to undo and delete what I needed was extremely useful. Without this, I wouldn’t have been able to experiment as much as I did

EDITING

EVALUATION •  Throughout both my research and evaluation stage I used a number of

new media devices to order and present my ideas

•  The main use was Blogger; although I had experience with using it for AS level I used it a lot more this year for uploading and sharing videos, through both Blogger and YouTube

•  It also worked as a progress log: this year I used it as a sort of diary and collection of my thoughts and ideas, referring back to it often to make sure everything was linking together. It was particularly useful when considering the codes and conventions of my text as I could refer back to and develop my initial research

•  I used presentational devices such as SlideShare and Prezi to create interesting presentations to show my ideas and evaluation answers as these were easy to use and effective

•  I also experimented with online sites such as Word It Out to create word bubbles and a particularly interesting cartoon feature, PowToon, to create a presentation about editing and the importance of it.

It’s clear that without these new technologies the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages of creating my texts would have been a lot more complicated and not as quick and easy to access. Due to the new developments in technology, We Media and Web 2.0 I had instant access to research and ideas, finding it easy to upload and share my ideas, gain feedback from my audience and create my actual products.
