What Genre?

We decided that to create a rom-com would be challenging for us, and give us a chance to use creativity.

The reason we decided on a challenging genre was because we felt that a horror or thriller is used to much as practises and a change in the codes and conventions would mean a bigger challenge for the both of us.

However, we have had our doubts about are ability to be funny, and after all the premise of a rom-com is the comedy. So we also decided on whether to create a trailer from a love story. So we have created this PowerPoint on how we will decide upon a set genre.

We have therefore divided this PowerPoint into “The Rom-Com” and “A Love Story”.

The Rom-Com

By definition a romantic comedy is a hybrid genre in which a story about romance is presented in a comedic style. Works in this genre are generally considered light-hearted, and are sometimes associated with the vaguely derogatory terms "chick lit" or "chick flick", meaning "primarily aimed at a female audience".

The Conventions of a Rom-ComThe genres of Romantic Comedy and A Love Story share two fundamental characteristics; in each there are two people that the audience must want to be together and there are obstacles to that union.

In Romantic Comedy it is the present situation of the characters which is important. The obstacles to the union of our two main characters are situational and/or internal to the characters and are invested with humour. The audience doesn’t need a wealth of information about the characters’ histories; we come into a situation and we work it out - in fact part of the pleasure of this genre. Romantic Comedies are defined by the era in which they are set.

The Conventions of A Love Story

In the Love Story it is the lovers who want to be together and this is a key and significant difference. The obstacles are that one or both of the protagonists are violating and disregarding the power structures in their lives by pursuing the union. Hence, the obstacles are much more serious and the consequences of this transgression may mean death. In fact, usually one or both of the protagonists will die. Therefore, we do need a wealth of information about the background of the characters in order to understand why the stakes are so high.
