Forward

We will be using the problem below as an example problem to find the median, mean, mode and range.

Marcella was played 5 ballgames where she scored the scores below.

28, 18, 24, 22, 18

The best thing to do for the next few problems is put the numbers in numerical order.

18, 18, 22, 24, 28

How to Find Median

You organize the numbers in numerical order.

18, 18, 22, 24, 28

The number of middling value is the median, in this case it is 22.

Sometimes there is no median at all.

How to Find Mean

Numbers: 18, 18, 22, 24, 28

To find the mean you add up all the numbers.

18 + 18 + 22 + 24 + 28 = 110

Then you take the 110 and divide it by the number of numbers, which is 5 in this case.

110/5 = 22

Mean: 22

Mini Lesson: Mean Names

Another word for “mean” is “average”.

How to Find Mode

Numbers: 18, 18, 22, 24, 28

To find this one you take the number that has the most of itself in the list and call it your mode.

In this case it is 18

There can be multiple duplicates of a number, but the mode will only be one number.

It is easier to find the mode if the numbers are in numerical order.

Mode: 18

How to Find Range

Numbers: 18, 18, 22, 24, 28

To find the range you take the maximum or the largest number and minus the minimum or smallest number from it.

28 – 18 = 10

Range : 10
