MA note to our Readers...Yes, Ballito continues to boom! The most obvious evidence being the new N2 interchange which is well underway, preparing to handle the larger volumes of traffic that are anticipated to enter Ballito over the next few years & beyond. Then there are the new additions to Lifestyle Centre with a variety of new shops as well as the new Tiffany’s shopping centre in Salt Rock. It seems that earthworks abound everywhere you turn in Ballito making way for the thousands of people that are expected to make this area their permanent home. But there is more to come and one can hardly believe that an International Convention Centre is also on the cards for Ballito some time down the line!

Although the area is growing exponentially it remains small enough to still have a feeling of community. The quality of life experienced here, strategic location of the town, fresh air, golden beaches & superb year round climate, great restaurants, good schools, great leisure activities, popular farmers markets and on the other end of the scale, almost every retail brand imaginable; Ballito now caters for practically every need!

Working behind the scenes are groups of people who are passionate about promoting tourism and business in the area e.g the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Tourism, now entering it’s 2nd year & the recently launched HOT BALLITO campaign which is aimed at positioning Ballito as the most sought after destination in the country. Events like the Mr Price Pro & Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival have also successfully placed Ballito on the map.

ABOUT US:McMurray Real Estate was established in 2007. Our principal, Terence McMurray started his successful career in Real Estate in Ballito in 1996. Charlene McMurray joined him in 1999 in a predominantly administrative capacity & sales support which she continues to do, today. Together, during their real estate career they have earned various awards in recognition of their sales achievements. Terence & Charlene made Ballito their home in 1994 and have since built both strong business networks in the area & a strong client base whilst also witnessing Ballito’s tremendous growth in all sectors.

The partnership includes Paul & Wendy McMurray who moved from Gauteng in mid 2006. New to the team this year is Gill Birch, whom we welcome. Gill has 15 years of experience in the property industry and enjoys playing golf, squash and tennis for which she has Springbok colours.

In July 2011 the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce issued the results of their first Business Retention & Expansion survey, the results of which were most illuminating! A total of 61 businesses in the area took part, of which 26% are in finance, insurance, property or business services (including graphic design), 23% are in wholesale retail or motor trade while construction and building form nearly 20% of the total. A significant percentage (21%) of these businesses have been operating for more than ten years, whilst over a third (36%) have been operating between one and five years.

In spite of the recession, as many as 46% of respondents have increased their number of employees over the last two years and nearly two thirds of those interviewed plan to employ more people over the next two years, the majority of which would be sales and marketing staff followed by ‘industry specialists’ whether it be an architect, chef, conveyancer, butcher etc.

As many as 74% of respondents felt the quality of life is an advantage of running a business in Ballito itself, with a fairly low crime rate, good access to customers coupled with the strong image of the area.

41% felt the single most important reason that influenced them to start a business in Ballito was related to opportunity and 31% to the quality of life.

80% of businesses said they have never considered selling, closing or moving their businesses out of the area over the last two years and 83% of business people say they have plans to expand in different ways.

More good news to shout about is that the Ilembe Municipality Economic Report for the 3rd quarter 2011 shows that business confidence in our area is at 69% where the national average seems to be at 39%!

So not only has the area expanded rapidly in a short time period, it is also busy all year around making it the perfect place to start a new business. The Ilembe Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism (ICCIT) aims to be the voice of business on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast by providing relevant support services and information, networking opportunities and promoting the area as a business and investment destination. The KZN north coast is also a primary development corridor which means the government is investing hugely in the area.

Even though business is booming and the area is bustling with activity, Ballito retains its sense of community and small town charm.
