It is with great pleasure that the University of Basel announces the new graduate de-gree program in Higher Education Manage-ment and Leadership. The new program addresses the growing demand for well-trained professional higher education man-agers who work at the interface between academic and administrative leadership. Graduates will be prepared to understand the complexity of management in a modern university.With its broad array of focal areas and courses, this innovative MBA is directed at academics in various positions of higher education academic staff management in universities.

The University of Basel confers upon grad-uates the degree of Master of Business Administration in Academic Manage-ment. Additionally, a diploma supplement is issued detailing the content and scope of the program and the participant’s academic achievements.

AUDIENCE/PROFESSIONAL PROFILES
The international MBA in Academic Manage-ment is aimed at academics from all disci-plines with leadership, management, and administrative responsibilities. By focusing on the core areas of quality, interaction, and development at universities, graduates gain the qualifi cations required to succeed in positions at universities that demand high levels of management expertise. Graduates of this MBA will
• obtain the knowledge and skills required to successfully shape management conditions within the university, taking into account all stakeholders involved.
• develop useful and current strategies for their management area in a national and international context and structure these appropriately and effectively in their academic organization.
• acquire the ability to create meaningful interfaces between academia and management by gaining an understand-ing of the issues of availability and orientation from the perspective of academic disciplines. This will enable them to make a nuanced obser vation and evaluation of complex management situations.

This part-time, internationally oriented degree program provides academics with the opportunity of high level continuing ed-ucation and to obtain an additional qualifi ca-tion in university management. The degree program takes a total of two and a half years (including fi nal thesis) and consists of two modules. After the fi rst module, it is possi-ble to interrupt one’s studies and resume
the second module at a later time. The degree program corresponds to a total of 63 ECTS credit points, one third of which are acquired in face-to-face seminars. The seminars take place once a month in blocks of two to three days (dates available at www.advancedstudies.ch).

DESCRIPTION
Building and expanding university-related leadership and management skills for pro-fessors, heads of institutes and depart-ments, deans, faculty managers, and those responsible for specifi c tasks in an academic unit.
Module 1 focuses on the professional man-agement of the key areas of university work – research and teaching – taking into account personnel development and quality assurance.

Applicants must have a university degree, research and teaching experience, and pro-fessional experience in a higher education environment. Candidates will be selected in an application process. A maximum of 24 students can be enrolled on the program.
Students must have completed the follow-ing to meet the required aims of the degree program:
• Participation in face-to-face seminars (minimum: 80%)
• 5 documented intervisions• 8 interviews with managers from the
higher education environment(individual and group work)
• 3 assessments of academic perfor-mance in communication/interaction
• Final examination for Module 1(covering the fi rst 4 focal areas)
• Final written examination covering all focal areas in the program (certain areas can be given special focus)
• Final thesis
ADMISSIONS ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT
The degree program is taught in English. Assessments of academic performance can be provided in English, German, or French.
The program is taught in Basel. Module 1 includes an excursion to Berlin, and Module 2 an excursion to Amsterdam.

In addition to broadening the participants’ horizons through a range of integrative knowledge, the degree program has three main aims:
Future Viability:The participants recognize what is required to shape the future of the university as an institution situated at the interface between scholarship and society, and are able to fur-ther develop the higher education institution in a sustainable manner.
Interaction Skills:The participants create appropriate, profes-sional structures for university communica-tion and participation, and deal competently with representatives of various academic disciplines, higher education policy, and the economy.
Implementation Strengths:The participants solve management prob-lems by employing academic insights and methods and developing integrated strate-gies based on normative reasoning.

Every two and a half years a new program cycle starts. The fi rst group will start in November 2014. The face-to-face seminars take place once a month in blocks of two to three days (dates available at www.advancedstudies.ch).
Registrations must be submitted online. The form can be downloaded from the web-site www.advancedstudies.ch. Applicants who meet the admission requirements will be invited to attend an interview.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Fees for the MBA in Academic Manage-ment are CHF 20,500 (Module 1: CHF 7,800, Module 2: CHF 12,700). The fees cover teaching and learning materials as well as examinations but do not include travel costs, accommodation, or meals.
