May 17 is Music Sunday at St. Matthew’s

While it’s true that every Sunday is Music Sunday at St. Matthew’s, one Sunday in May is designated as Music Sunday, when two of the adult choirs, the adult vocal choir “Senior Choir,” and the advanced adult bell choir “Bells Angels” are highlighted and given the opportunity to share an extra piece of music or two to the glory of God and in praise of God’s gift of music. You can hear these specially chosen pieces on Sunday, May 17 at the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. services.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ —Acts 2:1-11

A few months ago, I experienced an “Amazing Faiths” Dinner at Marquette University where among random groups of eight strangers, we took turns sharing our own faith stories and listening to the stories of others. It was an amazing experience of our common understandings of God and God’s work in the world, but more than anything, it reminded me just how hard it is to listen! I am not a good listener—I’m often trying to process what’s being said, and before the person is half done with their thought, I’m on to how I might respond. As a recent article I read noted, “We hear what we want to hear; our antennae are often tuned by our own assumptions.” There’s a lot of noise in the Pentecost Story—the creation story of the church. I’ve never noticed how challenging trying to listen would be. And yet, the primary work of God among all sorts of chaos and different peoples is to allow those gathered to hear—to listen to the works of power God is doing.

Noise ... Listen, Listen, Listen

Amidst the rumbling noise and rabbling culture in which we live, God’s Spirit is working in each of us—the Body of Christ—so that we might listen. Listen to the voices who differ from us. Listen to the needs of the strangers in our midst (even if we think we know them). Listen to the voice of God, calling us good and tuning our ears to listen for God’s grace! The Spirit is perking our ears—that we might hear God’s calling to walk as people of faith in new ways. “And yet. Sometimes we are not called to be a voice for the voiceless. Sometimes we are called to listen carefully and discover the voices in our midst. Sometimes we are called to consider whether we are the ones preventing voices from being heard.” - Susan Windley-Daoust Pastor Matt

Robert Lowry at tend ed the Un i ver si ty at Lew isb urg (later re named Buck nell Un i ver si ty), where he be came a pro fessor of lit er a ture. He was ordained as a Baptist minister and served in Penn syl van ia, New York Ci ty, Brooklyn, and New Jer sey. He helped found the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in New York Ci ty. He is most remembered as a composer of gospel music and a hymn writer. He was responsible for around 500 compositions, including “Beautiful River,” “Nothing But the Blood,” “Shall We Gather At The River?,” and “How Can I Keep From Singing?” Despite his success as a hymn writer, it was as a preacher that Lowry would have preferred to be recognized. He once stated: “Music, with me has been a side issue... I would rather preach a gospel sermon to an appreciative audience than write a hymn. I have always looked upon myself as a preacher and felt a sort of depreciation when I began to be known more as a composer.” But, however, it is as a hymn writer that he remains renowned. We celebrate God’s gift of music that works through composers, authors, arrangers, editors, singers, ringers and all musicians to glorify God the creator of all. Enjoy the celebration of God’s glorious gift of music as the choirs of St. Matthew’s share some special music through worship. The Senior Choir and Bells Angels will share pieces with the congregation this festive day. Singing out full praise, the Senior Choir will share two anthems. A setting of the text “For Remembered Music Sounding,” words by Thomas H. Troeger, a Professor at the Yale School of Divinity. Troeger has written over twenty books in the fields of preaching, poetry, hymnody and worship. The music is by K. Lee Scott. They will also share a lovely rendition of “How Can I Keep from Singing?” Bells Angels will also share two pieces, a lovely setting of two of our beloved “Shepherd Hymns” and an original composition that shares the joy of the season. Please join us to share in this wonderful gift of music and thank all our choirs and many musicians in the congregation for their dedication and service the entire year. The aim and final reason of all music should be nothing else but the Glory of God and the refreshment of spirit. – J.S. Bach

Celebrate the Holy Spirit on May 24: Pentecost History Ten days after the ascension of Christ and fifty days after his resurrection, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples on the day of Pentecost. Pentecost was an established Jewish festival also known as the Feast of Weeks, which drew people from many nations back to Jerusalem (Lev. 23:1521; Deut. 16:16). Pentecost symbolizes a new beginning. It celebrates the unleashing of the Holy Spirit on the world and the empowering of the church to reach the world with the gospel. In celebrating Pentecost, the church expresses its gratitude for the faithfulness of Christ in fulfilling his promise to send “another counselor” (John 14:16); celebrates the work of the Spirit in renewing all of creation; professes its confidence and security in knowing the Spirit’s power is available for its mission; and grows in awareness of the immensity of its calling to reach the world with the gospel. The traditional color for Pentecost is red, after the flames described in Acts 2:3.

PENTECOST Since the Holy Spirit conveyed power and authority to the apostles, transforming them from twelve frightened followers into a band of bold evangelists, Pentecost is known as the birthday of the Church. The details are set down in the Act of the Apostles, 2:16. So empowered were the apostles that they are said to have almost immediately baptized 3,000 people. As it happens, the Holy Spirit visited the apostles on the Jewish feast of Pentecost, a longestablished festival of thanksgiving for the first fruits of the wheat harvest. The Church’s transformation of this Jewish feast into a Christian festival was, in a way, related to the belief that the gift of the Holy Spirit to the apostles was the first fruits of a new harvesting of souls. May the Spirit fill you with the peace that we know in our Lord Jesus Christ, our risen and ascended Savior. John R. Paradowski – Minister of Music

My life flows on in endless song;Above earth’s lamentation I hear the sweet though far off hymn that hails a new creation:Through all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul—How can I keep from singing?–Robert Lowry, 1860

St. Matthew’s to be a tour site for Windows Into Wauwatosa, June 20 St. Matthew’s will be a participating site in this year’s Windows Into Wauwatosa. What’s that? Windows Into Wauwatosa is patterned after Doors Open Milwaukee, an event held in the fall by Historic Milwaukee Inc. that allows the public to visit buildings and other architecture in the city. Wauwatosa’s event is coordinated by the Wauwatosa Neighborhood Association Council. The intent is to provide and event that is low in cost and family friendly. This year the date is June 20 and the hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Our church will be open these hours when people can stop in to learn more about our building and congregation. We would love to have St. Matt’s volunteers be on site for some of the open hours to help give directions, answer questions and be a welcoming presence. You need not be here for the full six hours. If you are able to help please let me know. Jane Sandstrom 2627901652 Email: [email protected] website: www.windowsintowauwatosa.orghas information about the day, and will list other sites open for visits once they’ve been set up.

God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday - September 13! The people of St. Matthew’s do God’s work every day of the year both individually and together. That’s who we are. But on September 13, 2015, we will have another opportunity to join members of the 10,000 ELCA congregations throughout the nation in serving our communities all together, all at the same time, on this dedicated day of service, “God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday.” We will again be partnering with Greater Tosa Interfaith Older Adult Programs to help our neighbors with household tasks such as yard work, painting, simple repairs, or window washing. This year we also plan to include opportunities that are less physically demanding, such as letter writing, as well as some activities geared toward youth and families. If you are especially grateful for God’s goodness, consider thanking God with your service. If you would like to demonstrate the joy of serving to your children, please register the whole family. If you would like to meet more of the good people of St. Matthew’s, volunteer yourself. If you love the idea of millions of yellowshirted Lutherans spreading good news in action, join us. You will be able to sign up for specific tasks in the Commons on Sunday mornings beginning in June. Prepare yourself for a joyfilled day. God’s Work. Our Hands.

Book Nook: What does it mean to be Lutheran? In light of this spring’s adult education conversation about being Lutheran, here are a few reading suggestions you might pick up to explore the roots of Lutheran life a bit more!

Biography of Martin Luther

Roland Bainton, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther (1978), Abingdon Press

This classic biography of Martin Luther is a go-to for a basic trajectory of Luther’s life, ministry, and his impact on history. You can’t go wrong with this read!

* * *Martin Marty, Martin Luther (Penguin Lives Series) (2004), Penguin/Viking Press

Another solid biography by the pre-eminent Lutheran of the 20th Century, Marty’s read attempts to view Luther within his own historical context, in a broad-strokes view that doesn’t devolve into academic debate.

* * *Graduate Level: James M. Kittelson, Luther the Reformer: The Story of the Man and his Career (2003) Fortress Press.

This book was used by the Germany trip participants, and is, hands down, the best Luther biography I’ve read. A bit more complex in its analysis, it is still accessible.

Things Luther Actually Wrote

Small Catechism: Many haven’t probably touched this since Confirmation, but it is worth reading, especially for its talk about the meanings of the sacraments and creeds. Luther meant this to be used in families to teach the core of the faith, and a copy is found in the back of each ELW hymnal. For advanced reading, check out the Large Catechism.

* * *The Freedom of a Christian (Luther Study Edition), translated and introduced by Mark D. Tranvik, Fortress Press, 2008

This is one of the most important of Luther’s writings—the foundation of everything Sinner and Saint. This new translation has excellent contextual information and analysis of what this foundational piece means for Luther and for us today.

Lutheran Theology: What do Lutherans think about God?

Nadia BolzWeber, Pastrix (2013), Jericho Books

A Denver-based ELCA pastor, Bolz-Weber’s memoir contains unique, story-style reflections on life and God that are unabashedly Lutheran. Check out her “bullet points of Lutheran theology” and enjoy this prominent voice across Christian circles.

* * *

Steve Paulson, Luther for Armchair Theologians (2004), Westminster John Knox Press

This cartoon-filled book is also full of deep material about what Luther’s writings actually mean—in our flesh. A great basic explanation of many harder-to-grasp ideas of Lutheran theology, it was one of my favorite books in college!

* * *

Martin Marty, Lutheran Questions, Lutheran Answers (2007), Augsburg Books

This book is helpful in its chapters and sections, each of which deals with specific questions about what Lutherans think in different areas of faith—from sacraments to salvation to how the church is structured.

Reformation Lutheran Church has moved - Note from Diane Roznowski, Neighborhood Store Coordinator

I wanted to take a moment this evening to thank everyone, EVERYONE who helped with the move of Reformation’s Neighborhood Store, Office supplies, Summer youth and angel garden supplies and MANY other items too numerous to mention! What a fabulous crew! We began the move OUT of our building around 9:45 and finished sweeping out the last dustball at 11:45! The loading into the POD on the other end took a little longer since it was like fitting a jigsaw puzzle together, but we finished there by 12:45pm. AMAZING! What a great effort by so many. Thank you all for all the hard work, bringing your trucks, muscles and smiles. It truly was a day I will never forget. Now, it is as if the physical pieces of Reformation are in a chrysallis, awaiting the day when they will emerge and be even more beautiful and fly to serve God in new and wonderful ways with a revitalized and reinvented ministry. Pray that this day will come soon, and that in the mean time the work of Reformation will continue from the base of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. We will keep you all posted! Serenity Inn Coordinator NeededFrom Chris Bartelt, high school senior and current Serenity Inn Coordinator“To those interested in taking over the coordination of St. Matthew’s visits to the Serenity Inn, I have only one thing to say: You will not regret it. “My first visit was during my 8th grade year in middle school. My family made several additional visits until I took over as Coordinator for the monthly meals during my sophomore year in high school. Over the 3 years running the visits, I knew very few people who did not wish to return the next month. As Coordinator, I have been blessed to experience not only the dedication of the men at the Serenity Inn, but also that of the volunteers from our church. I’m finding it difficult to describe how rewarding this opportunity has been for me, other than that I think it is one of the most gratifying experiences that I have had in all my life.“I still visit every now and then. As a visitor, one can truly experience the wonderful dedication of the men housed at the Serenity Inn. I hope these short yet heartfelt words can persuade you to take on a role that I truly regret having to put down.”

The Serenity Inn Coordinator schedules 34 volunteers to make and serve dinner for about 812 residents of Serenity Inn on the 2nd Sunday of every month. A list of willing volunteers is provided and volunteers are also secured through the weekly bulletin. Thank you to Chris Bartelt who modeled true servanthood to all of us as the Serenity Inn Coordinator for the past several years. Well done, Chris, and God’s blessings in the future! If you would like more information about becoming the next Serenity Inn Coordinator please contact Sue Swing; [email protected].

Page 9Thirty-three years later, a labor of love is given upBev Etzelmueller retires as St. Matthew’s Librarian After nearly 33 years of ministry as St. Matthew’s volunteer librarian, Bev Etzelmueller will be stepping down as librarian

and also as the head of the library committee. There will be a “Thank you!” reception in her honor on May 31st of this year, during the coffee time, 9:45 a.m.

Bev has seen many changes in the library location, which included it being moved from a corner basement room to the current space it enjoys now at the heart of our commons area (which was the chancel/altar location of our original sanctuary).

Over these many years, Bev has served St. Matthew’s ministry faithfully by not only reading all of the books that we have in our church library, but through that knowledge being able to also make informed suggestions to those who come in to find various faith help in the titles our library offers. She spent many hours building up the quality of the books available, and has especially made the children’s area a treasure to behold.

This photo of Bev with the Sunday School class shows one of the things that she enjoyed very much. Sunday School classes were be invited to the library to learn what they might see in the library, in the hope that their parents would bring them in and the library would see increased usage.

Bev wanted to learn from other church librarians, and sought out other churches to meet and share ideas. She became the person showing others what our library was able to do. She saw that this sharing among other libraries was important and she also went to national church library conventions.

Besides her library work, Bev also leads our quilting ministry which makes hundreds of blankets that are donated a variety of ministries throughout Milwaukee.

Please join all of us at St. Matthew’s on Sunday, May 31st during our Coffee hour time as we thank and celebrate Bev’s library ministry among us.

Green Tips for the Use of Cars:

Use car roof racks on an as-needed basis. Their use increases wind resistance which increases fuel consumption. If you can transport stuff inside your vehicle, do so. And if you don’t need your roof rack, remove it as soon as you can.

**Drive slower. For every mile per hour you drive under sixty-five miles her hour, you improve your car’s fuel efficiency by about 2 percent.

**Try public transportation for one week. There are considerable advantages to you as well as the environment. You can save on gas, maintenance costs, parking fees, parking tickets and possibly insurance premiums. You won’t have to worry as much about accidents, vehicle wear and tear, vandalism or theft. You won’t have to deal with traffic, bad drivers or parking. You can catch up on reading or pass the time with a hobby, like knitting during the ride.

**Accelerate slowly when getting up to freeway speed. The faster you accelerate, the more fuel you use.

**Idling in the drive-through lane at the fast food restaurant? Not only is it sometimes quicker to park and go in to buy your food, it’s better for your gas mileage and for the environment (think, exhaust fumes!)

**Need a car wash? If you can wash your car yourself, you’ll save the cost of the car wash, plus use less water and less energy (no blow dryers). Enlist the help of a kid or two.

These funds have been accumulated through sales by our Sustainable Crafters, through a monthly deposit of $500 due to energy savings from past projects, and through several bequests. Please join us to double this fund in support of future projects so that we can do even more to care for God’s good creation through continued reduction of energy use and through water conservation. Project priorities will be determined by the Church Council Property Committee and done as the need for the project arises. Through this initiative and the many initiatives we have completed we hope to become an Energy Star certified congregation. Thank you for all your support over the last nine years. You have done great things!

Possible future projects • Replace fluorescents with LEDs in the education wing – save

energy • Replace fluorescents with LEDs in fellowship hall – save energy • Replace the parking lot(s) – design with water conservation in

mind • Redesign existing green space to conserve water • Replace education wing hot water heater with instants – save

energy • Change parking lot lights to LEDs – save energy • Change exterior building lights to LEDs – save energy • Install instant hot water heater in sacristy – conserve water • Install instant hot water heater in lower kitchen (staff area) – con-

serve water • Install waterless urinals – conserve water • Install a small wind turbine on the roof – green energy • Install more solar panels – might be done when the roof needs

replacing • Use the energy we produce – fund a storage battery • Install low flow toilets – conserve water (probably not until next

renovation) • Install energy efficient washer and dryer • Support soil improvement projects – reduce atmospheric carbon

dioxide

Go for the Green!

Matthew Petersen, a young adult who grew up here at St. Matthew’s. is currently attending the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, to become a pastor. It is a tradition that St. Matthew’s financially supports seminary students. Matthew is giving us an opportunity to see what he does and how his classes are going. He is the son of Mark and Rebecca Petersen of our congregation.

Greetings from LSTC! Seminary life this semester continues to be a great blessing to me. I have been challenged in and continue to enjoy diverse classes. In Lutheran Confessional Heritage we wrestle with documents that I have not interacted with since confirmation class. The unbreakable thread of God’s abundant grace through Christ has been woven across my heart and is spun from this heritage. The Theology of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a Christian social ethics class have fueled my passion for justice and work among the poor and oppressed. In Jesus within Judaism, we are learning about the multifaceted context of Jesus while reading through the Gospel of Mark. Along with these classes I am also reading the lectionary in Greek each week with a professor emeritus and another student. Outside of classes I continue to participate in monthly prayer vigils for undocumented immigrants and their families at the Broadview detention center, and facilitate antiracism workshops. I have also helped to partner with a synagogue in the neighborhood to grow seedlings in the LSTC chapel for their community garden. It was a great opportunity to attend lectures by the Christian philosopher and activist Dr. Cornel West and theologian Dr. James Cone this semester. When I spoke to him personally, I was proud to mention to Dr. Cone that St. Matthew’s had read his book, The Cross and the Lynching Tree. Looking forward: I have been accepted into the Urban Clinical Pastoral Education Consortium for the summer and await a placement at a Chicago nonprofit. Also, I have arranged a yearlong ministry in context field work placement beginning in the fall at St. Leonard’s Ministries, reentry program for the formerly incarcerated. I have enjoyed and been enriched by the Reflecting Forgiveness devotionals throughout Lent. It is such a blessing to have the support of the St. Matthew’s Spiritfilled community. You remain in my prayers and I ask for yours as well. Peace in Christ, Matthew

Renovation - Phase One - Complete! We began plans for renovating our church space nearly 6 years ago through the dedicated work of our renovation committee and just this last week finally put the finishing touches on the last pieces of Phase one. After two years of renovation, with the installation of our Coakley Brothers Office Furniture, the installation of our new Heuler Tile granite conference room table, new carpeting and new ceiling tiles, our office space is complete. A big THANK YOU to the committee who began it all and helped move it towards completion Ray Eisemann (CoChair), Tim Nelson, Paul Braun, Jeff Higgins, Dave Fagerberg, Jerry Wunderlich, Greg Strand, Lynn Thomas, and Ed Bross. Also, a big THANK YOU to TV John’s Construction team Luke Nelson, Dan Nelson and Tim Nelson who all managed the project like it was their own house that was being renovated. Also, another big THANK YOU to Greg Strand from Zimmerman Architectural Studios who was the principal architect and helped carefully create a space that we are all proud of. Also, a special thanks to the many other committees who helped bring this project to completion Rob Wedel, our church Treasurer and the Finance committee who oversaw the finances of the project. Also, the Church councils who continually checked in and approved the work as it progressed. Also, the church staff who put up with the noise, dust and constant change as the progress moved along. Finally, a special THANK YOU to all of you for your care and support of this project. Because of you, we now have a new ministry home. Our new boiler system is saving us energy and money, our new kitchen which is serving us well in many ways, with those who have used it praising its functionality, and finally the new office spaces that will serve our staff well for years to come. All of these renovations bring strength to our ministry and help us to do ministry that much better. It’s been a long road, with several hundred various meetings and conversations, but it’s all been worth it. Thanks for your support in helping us to bring this vision to completion! Pastor Chris Manke

The Rev. Dr. Cheryl Peterson to speak at St. Matthew’s! Monday, June 15thThe Holy Spirit as the Giver of LifeIn the Church and World Today In a day conference, Cheryl Peterson, a former Milwaukee pastor, will explore what it means to be the church today in light of the changing mission field in North America, especially in light of the rising number of “Nones” and those who are “spiritual but not religious.” She will present her proposal for an understanding of the church that “starts with the Spirit,” drawing on the narrative of the Acts of the Apostles and also the ecumenical creeds as resources. She will discuss what it means to affirm the Holy Spirit as the giver of life both in terms of a traditional Lutheran understanding of the means of grace, Word and Sacrament, and in dialogue with other perspectives, such as charismatic and Pentecostal. Finally, she will explore where the Spirit seems to be at work in and outside of the church bringing new life and transformation.

Biography: The Rev. Dr. Cheryl Peterson is associate professor of systematic theology at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. She received the Ph.D. in theology from Marquette University, Milwaukee in 2004 and the M.Div. from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1991. Before joining Trinity’s faculty in 2005, she served as copastor with her husband, the Rev. Dr. Charles (“Chuck”) Peterson, of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (20002005) and as pastor of First English Lutheran Church in Tyrone, Pennsylvania (19911997). She is the author of “Who is the Church? An Ecclesiology for the TwentyFirst Century” (Fortress Press, 2013) and numerous articles and book chapters. Her current research focuses on the work and role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian and the world, in dialogue with Pentecostalism and those who claim to be “spiritual but not religious.” She and Chuck live in Columbus with their menagerie of two dogs, two cats, and a parrot.

Office Space Remodeled - Office Efficiency is on the increase

First, the office ceiling was replaced, the entire office, including pastors’ offices, was repainted, and new carpeting was installed.

This is what the office looks like from the front door. Lower dividers make the space more inviting; the wood tones add warmth. The previous office furniture was installed approx. 20 years ago.

This space was created from half of the old kitchen. It is now our office workroom, where the copiers, folders, paper, etc. are kept. It is con-nected to the main office.

An additional work station was created

by moving the copier into the

work room. This work

station is under the office

windows on the north side

of the office.
