Appointment Of New Headteacher Lympne Church of England Primary School I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Steve Owen as Headteacher from 1st September 2017. Mr Owen has been Headteacher of Sholden Church of England Primary School near Deal since April 2014; and has worked very effectively to raise standards and the outcomes for pupils. We are confident that he will be a great fit in our school and that he has the leadership qualities we will need to maintain the Christian ethos and happy atmosphere of the school. We look forward to welcoming him properly in September.

St Stephen Church Nave Roof Appeal £52,000

First of all, St Stephen PCC would like to acknowledge and thank all who have sent in donations so far;unfortunately we do not have contact details in all cases to thank every-one personally, but please be reassured that we are very grateful for your generosity. Our appeal received a very welcome boost of an offer of £10,000 this month from a local charity and therefore we have now (mid March) raised in donations and pledges nearly £28,000.However, it is a slow process; we continue to apply to funding bodies, a number of responses are awaited, fundraising events have been and are being organised plus appeals to the wider community. But we still have a long way to go to meet our target.Any donations, however small, or big, will be gratefully received, together with any ideas for fundraising, thinking “outside the box”.

Please contact: Colin Hunter, Maycroft, Belcaire Close, Lympne,

Hythe, Kent, CT21 4JR Tel: 01303 266202

Email: [email protected] Thank you on behalf of Lympne PCC.

in your diary if you wish to join in. Letters will be

going out in April to those who have taken part in

the past and there will be more information in next

month’s Newsletter.

We had a very interesting meeting. Our speaker was John Keeble, who lives in Lympne. He spoke about the National Coastwatch Institution which was set

up in 1944, to restore visual watch along the coast. There are now 43 operational stations around England and Wales, from Lancashire to Wearside. Folkestone lookout keep a watch on the Dover Straits the busiest sea lane in the world, as well as Folkestone Harbour, the beaches and cliffs at the warren. The Folkestone lookout was officially opened on 24th April 2007 and many improvements have been made, they want to equip a room for training to reduce dependence on the facilities of Dover Coastguard. The watch is all done by volunteers. They continue to raise funds to maintain services locally, donations are gratefully received. They welcome new volunteers. It was a very informative talk thanks to John.If you would like to join our WI please contact 01303 264179 or 01303 230855 our next meeting is on Thursday 13th April 2017

Table Top Sale The Committee and all our helpers

worked very hard to make this a successful event.

All tables were sold, with several people selling their

goods for the benefit of the Village Hall Development Fund,

as well as SHAL donating the proceeds from a Treasure

Hunt game they generously organised on our behalf.

The event made £904.39 profit after expenses, which

brings the Development Fund up to £26,498.59.The

Committee would like to thank everyone who supported

this event, not forgetting those who gave raffle prizes,

which contributed to two spectacular hampers.

Lympne Airfield History Society Web: www.lympneairfield.com Over thirty people attended our presentation by Betty Black on the life of Skyways a Lympne based airline from 1955 to 1974. The presentation was illustrated with colour photographs of the era.Linking London to Paris 21/09/55 the first flight to Beauvais near Paris was made on 21/9/55 as a coach air service. The man behind Skyways was Eric Rylands having seen a similar service between Blackpool and Isle of Man brought the idea to Lympne. He bought the airfield outright in 1956. The booking in hall and lounges had to be extended as they had been previously used by car carrying airline Silver City which had move to Lydd. Dakotas and brand new Hawker Siddley 784 twin turbo prop aircraft were used for flights to Jersey, Osten and Montpelier. 1968 saw

247,000 passengers using Lympne. Lympne Airport provided local employment with over 300 working for Skyways.Lympne became Ashford Airport in 1969 and was opened by Ted Heath MP.A new runway had replaced the grass one after a serious landing accident in 1965, in which all survived the upturned 748 as it rolled over in poor weather. Personalities were remembered with affection which included several former employees, too many to mention here, save for Cpt. Murray (Andy) Anderson who had flown PRU Spitfires in WW2 and gone on to fly Lysanders in and out of France at night dropping off and collecting SOE agents. He continued a flying career in the civil sector including Skyways. Several other Cpts. had been RAF pilots in WW2. We learned that Prince Charles and the Duke of Edinburgh flew into Lympne often in a Queen’s Flight Andover (a military 748) to visit the Brabourne estate. After a management buyout in 1971 Skyways became part of Dan Air. The last Dakota flight left Lympne on 31 /10/74 returning to

Lydd ending a 19 year golden era of aviation history for Skyways at Lympne. Our next meeting on May 2nd presented by John Simpson on the stories of Douglas Bader and Roger Bushell (Great Escape Big X) at Lympne before, during and after the war. We meet every two months at 7.30pm in the East Bar of Lympne Castle. There is no admission charge. Please note

we are working with SHAL to avoid clashing dates in future, albeit holiday commitments may make this more difficult for our July meeting. From September this should be the case, as we look to occupy the first Tuesday in the month. For more Information please contact:John Simpson 01303 265078

Studying History and Archaeology in Lympne (SHAL)

Our next meeting, on Tuesday 11 April, 7.30 pm, St Ste-phen Church, will be our AGM when we will be reviewing our activities of the past year. This will be followed by a short presentation and taster session to introduce our summer project on Roman food. New members and visi-tors are always welcome. For further information about SHAL please contact Fiona Jarvest on 01303 237143 or email [email protected], or visit our website www.shalstudygroup.org.uk. In March Rod le Gear gave a highly interesting and enter-taining talk on Underground Kent. Rod began by telling us that we were lucky to live in this area - no underground mines and tunnels to cause subsidence! There are millions of blocked-up water wells in Kent, which sometimes open up. One in a school playing field was oval shaped and associated with an old brick field. When bricks were needed in large quantities for building, any areas of land with underlying clay were turned into brickfields, with wells being dug to supply the water needed. Dene holes were also dug to mine chalk to mix with the clay, and also for agriculture to improve acid or heavy clay soils In Broadstairs there was a large brickfield and dene hole with many tunnels running under the town.Home owners there cannot get insurance for subsidence! The traditional way to fill a hole would be to drop a tree stump down, which would jam half-way, to be covered by a brick or flint cap.As the tree stump rotted, the plug would move, causing the hole to open up. One such shaft, 70ft deep, opened up in a front garden; another was a brick-lined slurry from a cow shed, containing the rotting remains of animals from a foot and mouth disease out-break.Canterbury Cathedral is completely surrounded by a drain, large enough to walk through, which was built in the 12th century, regularly maintained over the centuries, using a variety of materials. Many existing tunnels were used in WWII by the Home Guard and as air-raid shelters. Ramsgate tunnels and, of course, Dover Castle, are open to the public. In 1903 William Nichols

produced a theory that different sections of the chalk mines of Chislehurst Caves were made by the Druids, Romans and Saxons. However the earliest documented evidence for a chalk cave is in 1737, with the “Druid” section still being worked in 1860! In WWI the caves were used by Woolwich Arsenal and in WWII as

a public shelter and subsequently as a live music venue. The caves are open to the public daily and, again, well worth a visit.

LITTER WATCH Friday 10th March saw the continuing fight against the huge amount of rubbish dumped by irresponsible lorry drivers and users of the highway along Otterpool Lane Lympne. The litter pick led by KCC Warden John Lodge and Derek Cowell who has worked for years with a group of volunteers to keep our village clean and litter free, met at 10 AM bags and litter picking sticks in hand. Volunteers answered the call as part of the Clean Kent Campaign, and worked hard to return a section Otterpool Lane to clean and tidy area. The evidence of this antisocial behaviour was clear to see when many large bags of rubbish were piled up at the end of the event. Help us to continue dealing with this issue which blights our village. If you see rubbish being thrown from vehicles, on no account approach the driver but please take the number and make of the vehicle and importantly the name of the company on the vehicle and send the details to the Parish Council at [email protected] and we will do our best to follow this up.

APRIL- the month of fun and frolic – well at least it is for the lambs. There are plenty on The

Marsh, but in Lympne usually one of the best places to see them is leaning on the field gate just above Shepway Cross. After the lovely weather in March the garden is also having a frolic. The hedges are greening up and the grass is going ballistic – keep those blades high for the first few cuts.Try removing the moss by scarifying, apply some moss treatment or just be happy with some moss – at least its green! Don’t let the weeds get on top of you – mulch like mad to suppress them. Prepare your containers for planting out next month. You could decide to sow some of them now with salads and herbs – cut and come again lettuce, rocket, chives, parsley and mustard would be a good choice.Still time to plant perennials – look out for cheap local plants at the Village Hall car boot sale on Saturday 15 April.

Stanford with Postling WI are holding a Breakfast Brunch on Saturday 29th April 10.30am-12 noon.At 5 Honeywood Close, Lympne. A sausage, bacon and egg roll with toast & marmalade will be served . Also tea or coffee. The cost is £3.50, & there will be a Tombola. This is a fun event so come and join us for breakfast.

Gardening by Kent Gardener

COUNTRY MATTERS with Michael Owen- Lambing starts on the 20th March and as usual we separate the ewes into four groups; Romney’s/Kent’s, Suffolk crosses, mules and mule teg’s. We hope to have some local assistance for the busiest three weeks of lambing, helping out with the feeding and cleaning. Romney’s are the local sheep breed to Kent and were exported world wide, in particular to New Zealand, where they still dominant. In 1944, an emergency landing of a Flying Fortress over shot Lympne Aerodrome and landed in the field by the County Members. My father took the family up to see it. A young member of Lympne (not so young anymore) went to investigate after the Americans had put a guard on the crashed aircraft. The guard informed the youngster that he would count to 5 before shooting. Young J said he has never run as fast in his life.An unusual sighting last week was a raven on one of our dung maxels. The only raven I have ever seen outside of the Tower of London. Ravens are very rare locally, but are occasionally seen along the South Coast. Rooks are much more commonly sighted around us and are often a pest to our maize silage. One heron has taken nine gold fish from our water trough. The gold fish are used to keep the water in the trough clean for the cows. The heron is now after the spawning frogs and tadpoles, which emerge at this time of year. And as always, buy British.
