Marsham Village News 25th Edition July 2014 The deadline for the next edition is Thursday 21 st August 2014. Any articles, letters or adverts should be sent to [email protected] or, if anything needs typing, to Linda and Eric at 3 Cranes Lane. Great news from the Defibrillator Project on page 8. One of the possibilities being explored by the group, like many other villages around the country, is to use the telephone box to house the defibrillator. With this in mind, they would like to know whether anyone in the village still uses the phone box. If you do would you please let Adrian Scargill know by telephone (734488), e mail ( [email protected] ) or a note through the door of 12 Old Norwich Road. As mentioned in an earlier edition of the Newsletter, we are planning a World War One commemoration issue with emphasis upon the men of Marsham who served in the 1 st World War. We have researched these men but if anyone could supplement that with photos or other information, that would be great. We are planning that it will be part of our November edition. A reminder that this is our last edition until September. Could I take this opportunity to thank Linda and Eric for processing some of the letters and articles that appear each month in the Newsletter and also our faithful band of volunteers who distribute and deliver it each month. Without them we could not get it to every home in the village. We hope that you have a warm and enjoyable summer. Don’t forget the Starting Handle Club’s Annual Summer Show. There are further details in this edition.

Village News

25th Edition July 2014

The deadline for the next edition is Thursday 21st August 2014. Any articles, letters or adverts should

be sent to [email protected] or, if anything needs typing, to Linda and Eric at 3 Cranes Lane.

Great news from the Defibrillator Project on page 8. One of the

possibilities being explored by the group, like many other

villages around the country, is to use the telephone box to

house the defibrillator. With this in mind, they would like to

know whether anyone in the village still uses the phone box. If

you do would you please let Adrian Scargill know by telephone

(734488), e mail ( [email protected] ) or a note

through the door of 12 Old Norwich Road.

As mentioned in an earlier edition of the Newsletter, we are planning a World War One

commemoration issue with emphasis upon the men of Marsham who served in the 1st World War. We

have researched these men but if anyone could supplement that with photos or other information,

that would be great. We are planning that it will be part of our November edition.

A reminder that this is our last edition until September. Could I take this opportunity to thank Linda

and Eric for processing some of the letters and articles that appear each month in the Newsletter and

also our faithful band of volunteers who distribute and deliver it each month. Without them we could

not get it to every home in the village.

We hope that you have a warm and enjoyable summer. Don’t forget the Starting

Handle Club’s Annual Summer Show. There are further details in this edition.

Letters to the Editor

The letters in this section are published unedited and do not necessarily reflect the views of the

editing committee. We see the Village Newsletter as a channel for people in the village to air their

views – positive and negative.

It is good to see and read information

and news from a number of

contributors to the Marsham Village

News each month such as: The W.I.,

the Parish Church, the Parish Council,

the School, the

Village Hall and letters to the editor. It

was also good to read news from the

Parish Council recently about the

situation at the Marsham Waste Plant

and I hope that the Chairman's Annual

Report will be published in full in your

next issue.

Unless one is able to attend the Parish

Council meetings it is very difficult to

find out about the work being done by

the council on our behalf and the

decisions taken. The minutes when

they are put onto the notice board are

already four to five weeks out of date.

We are very fortunate to have such a

well produced and attractive

newsletter supported by local traders

and delivered free to every house in

Marsham.

The Parish Council is at the hub of any

village community and it is vital that

they communicate with all their

parishioners as much as possible. What

better way than using the medium of

the Marsham Village News.

Yours sincerely

Will Ching

Starting Handle Club Summer Show

We again have many entries for this year’s show

featuring exhibits from all parts of the country.

Peak Vale Tractor Pullers will be returning and

they are hopeful of increased numbers of

participants for this the most powerful motor

sport on earth. The main parade ring feature this

year will be a Farming Year Display, this will

feature all the activities of the farming year with

vintage machinery, some of which is very rare and

is unique to the Marsham Show, and will not be

seen anywhere else in the UK. On Saturday

evening we will be having a tractor road run

around the local villages, followed by a hog roast

and barbecue and music by Farmer Dan and his

Irish Showband. This will be open to the public at a

cost of £9, it is essential to pre-book for catering

reasons, tickets will be available at the show. On

Sunday we have a special visit by the City Of

Norwich Pipe Band who will be performing a

marching and musical display. Also, of interest to

residents of Marsham, we will be displaying items

made in Marsham. On display will be the Soames

Steam Car and various other items manufactured

at the foundry, if any residents have any

photographs or memorabilia that can be added to

this feature we would be very grateful for any

assistance, contact Bob Parke on 01263 -732267.

Thank you for your support.

Kind regards, Bob Parke.

WI

At our May meeting we discussed and then voted on the 2014 WI Resolution about organ donation

which calls on every member to make their wishes known, and to encourage members of their families,

friends and local community to do likewise. Although 80% of the population say they are willing to

donate their organs only 30% are on the register, and 3 people die every day waiting for a transplant in

the UK where organ donation consent rate is among the lowest in Europe. There is no upper age limit

and registration can be made on-line, when you renew your driving licence, and donor cards can be

picked up at health centres and many other places.

We also discussed final arrangements for our craft entry for The Royal Norfolk Show. If you visited the

Show perhaps you took time to look around the WI marquee and have some tea and cake.

We now look forward to our summer supper meeting in July. In August our speaker will be Graham

Davy with his subject “Not worth much but valuable” and in September Max Marriner from the

Association for the Blind.

Our August meeting is on 27th

in the Village Hall. New or returning members are very welcome to

come along and join us, transport need not be a problem as we could arrange for you to be picked up if

you need to be – call me on 01263 732606 or email at [email protected].

News from Marsham Primary School

Last week, we held a Family Learning Morning at school.

This began with a wonderful session with the story teller

Paul Jackson. Children, family members/carers and

teachers alike sat enthralled listening to him tell a story.

He had us all in the palm of his hand, totally captivated.

You could have heard a pin drop!

The rest of the morning consisted of 4 activities that the

children and family members rotated round:

Creating symmetrical patterns using both natural

and man-made materials

Making a leaf man out of clay

Creating pipe cleaner minibeasts

Outdoor PE games led by Ryan from Football

in the Community

A great morning was had by all. A big “Thank you!” to all

family members and carers who joined us.

Page 8: Marsham Village News (25th Edition)

Our current target is £2500 to cover

purchase of a defibrillator and a

special outside heated cabinet as

well as installation. There will also be

additional costs for training and

information sessions. We also need

to ensure that we have funds

available for replacement pads and

for the future replacement of

batteries. If you can help with

fundraising or would like to make a

donation please contact Nicola

Hibberd on 01263 733557 or email

[email protected].

Thank you

Marsham Community Public Access Defibrillator Project

What a brilliant month of fundraising and donations.

Our new total now stands at £1198. Thank you to all those who attended our recent

quiz at The Plough Inn raising £270 on the night and to the children at St Michael’s

School in Aylsham who raised £88 at their recent Mufti day. Individual thanks to Mr

Dale for his donation and also to the Marsham resident who generously donated

£100. The Parish Council have also donated £100 on behalf of Marsham residents

from money raised through the recycling bins so thank you to everyone. We had a

very enjoyable afternoon on Monday 19th June with the children at Marsham School

who are designing some posters to help us with our fundraising. They were very

enthusiastic and keen to learn about the defibrillator project. Thank you to the

children and staff for your help. Look out for the posters around the village in the next

few weeks.
