By I860 Sarah and Eber were living a few miles West in Carroll

County in the Hickory Level Community, Ga. Here they lived near

Eber's brothers, Reason and George along with Daniel and Canzadah

Eskew. It is not known for sure whether their first four were

born in Campbell or Carroll County. However, Vine and Miles Ebe

were born in Hickory Level.

Following the War Between the States, Eber and Sarah moved

to near Troy in Obion County, Tennessee where they lived for about

12-15 years, 1866-1878. During their years in Tennessee Jack and

Jim married--Jack to Sarah E. Escue and Jim to Lucinda A. Davis,

(also written Lucilda). Around 1872 Eber's brother, George arrived

in Tennessee and settled near Eber and Sarah. In 1878-1879 all of

the Rainwater families moved to Logan County, Arkansas where they

homesteaded lands near the area bounded by Deleware, Blaine and

Shoal Creek.

During these years in Logan County their remaining children

married except Martha Catherine. Samuel Simpson to Sarah Graves,

Vine to John Johnson, and Miles Ebe to Laura Frazier—all from

Neighboring families.Note: Eber and Sarah had 10 children. Four died very young without

names and dates. No family member knew more about them.1900 census states "10 children" between 1850 & 1865.

Eber and Sarah farmed as much as 200 acres until later years

when he disposed much of it. From 189̂ -1899 he had a contract to

haul mail between the post office at Elaine and Dardnelle. For

this he was given $150.00 for annum. He may have made purchases in

Dardanelle that he re-sold in Elaine giving rise to the story that

he and Sarah operated a small store "of sorts".

For a time all of Eber's and Sarah's children lived near by.

However, in 1891-92 James and Lu returned to Tennessee. In 1896

"Aunt Betty" died followed by Jack's death in 1898, leaving eight

children who were taken in by Sarah and Eber and the spinster amtt

Martha Catherine. In 1898-99 Miles Ebe and Vine, each with their

families moved to Tenn. near their brother, Jim, only to return a

year later.

Eber died on 6 May 190̂ and Sarah followed him in death on

July 1, 1906. They are both buried with some of their children

and grandchildren in Elizabeth Hall Cemetery near Elaine. Samuel

Simpson and Sarah along with other of the family are buried at

Graves Cemetery a short distance away. James and Lu are buried in

Obion County near Hornbeak, Tenn.

Grandchildren of Simpson, Vine and Jack still live in Logan

Co. Miles Ebe's and some of Jack's and Simp's children live in

Oklahoma. James* children live in northwest Tennessee and southeast

Missouri.

My father was the son of Miles Ebe--William Ira (189̂ -1982)

and I am Jerry Allen Rainwater — 9 May 1925, Mrth.

Julia Britt and Reason Rainwater and family moved from Ga.

to Ark. They were living in Ga. when Sheridan made his raid and

burned the depot (from Aunt Rose Vaught Boucher).

"I would place the general area where Reason, George, and Eber

lived at a point near where present day highways 6l and 166 inter-

sect. This intersection is the approximate location of Hickory

Level (now extinct). I think Reason and George lived a few miles

north towards Villa Rica. As you look at a map none of them were

more than 10 miles away from McWhorter, which is the general area

James and Apposley lived in."(taken from letter by Jerry Rainwater,

desc. of Eber Rainwater)

Mrs. Allie (Gray) Hallifild told Aunt Rose Boucher, Aunt

Mattie Vaught, and Julia Ada Pritchard that her parents or family

were neighbors to the Reason Rainwaters and that she remembers that

Grandmother Julia (Britt) was a wonderful person and a real good

cook. She said that the Gray's and Rainwater children had played

together many years, near Blacksprings, Montg., Ark. Dr. Jack Gray,

Jr., veterinarian, now living in McAllen, Texas with wife Verna,

is grandson to this Dr. Gray. After Grandma Julia died, Grandpa

Reason Rainwater married again and the wife was not very congenial

with Clementine, so Clementine left home and lived with Dr. Gray's
