THIRD INFANTRY DIVISION
JANUARY 2015
SOLDIER OF THE QUARTER 04-14
As Major LaFlash announced last month, Soldier of the Quarter, SOTQ, is a new system that gives additional recognition to soldiers from each platoon as
well as from each DMOS. Recipients of the SOTQ will be those soldiers who are active for the 3 months of that quarter and who go above and beyond the normal
call of duty. This month we are proud to announce our first Soldiers to be named SOTQ. Currently we have a soldier from 1st and 3rd platoon. DMOS SOTQ will
begin at the end of this current quarter, to be awarded in April. Candidates for SOTQ are recommended by Platoon, Squad, Fireteam, and DMOS Leadership. Can-
didates are then reviewed by BMO staff to determine if the soldier has been active the entire time, performs a uniform inspection, speaks with their Chain of
Command about their performance, and in some cases may conduct an interview with the candidate.
Congratulations to the current winners and good luck to you soldiers fighting for your selection next quarter!
FIRST PLATOON - SERGEANT ALEKSANDAR TODOROVIC
Since his enlistment early last October, CPL Hoehn has demonstrated a pattern of outstanding per-
formance both in his squad as a Fireteam Leader and through his DMOS work for both RRO and FIG. CPL

signed tasks in addition to extra duties performed through his own initiative. His steadfast and dedicated
character has made him a valuable member of Third Platoon Blackhawks, Second Squad Jesters. Accom-
plishments of Fourth Quarter, 2014:
SGT Todorovic’s resourcefulness and sound judgment combined with his self-motivation contribut-
ed greatly to successful reorganization of 1st Platoon over the past quarter. As a member of FIG, through

With the end of 2014 and the start of 2015 we look back as leaders and see what areas we need to focus on for the up coming year! As 2014 was a very
eventful year with the launch of our new state of the art website and PERSCOM system that is being talked about by many other realism units, but we also had
great strides in our leaders! As of the new year we have four of our squad leaders that lead combat squads that had just enlisted into our great 3rd Infantry Divi-
sion in 2014! This shows me the type of leaders we have, to grow through the ranks and be called upon to lead a squad into battle is no small task and our squad
leaders do it without hesitation and with great pride!
Also in 2014 we saw some of our great combat leaders retire or leave the 3rd Infantry Division. Captain Jon Erickson is a soldier that retired in 2014 that
has given a lot to the 3rd Infantry Division Realism Unit. Jon Erickson, a name that will be forever immortalized within the Third Infantry Division as a man who
never wavered and continued to lead with passion and dedication for over 8 years. First joining the Third Infantry Division in 2006, Captain Erickson found him-
self climbing the ladder at an incredible rate, volunteering for leadership positions as they became available, eventually all the way up to Executive Officer. We
honor him for all he has done for this unit, its personnel, and the gaming community as a whole. His leadership was present in all aspects of the unit, vocally with-
in Teamspeak, visibly in on our America's Army and Arma 3 servers, as well as with his impalpable contributions on our website.
We also had great leaders like Master Sergeant Jeffery Doten that retired in October of 2014 and Sergeant First Class Dennis Scott who as well retired in
October 2014. But as we lose these great leaders that once lead their soldiers from the front, we also gained great leaders in 2014, as I said before, four of our
squad leaders are new enlistees of 2014! Great leaders like Staff Sergeant Ty Jenkins, Sergeant Arthur Cantu, Sergeant Matthew Breen who was a returning vet-
eran, and new appointed squad leader, Corporal Gary Hunter. To have these new leaders in the position that they are in makes me extremely proud of the foun-
dation we have set up and I am confident in our continued growth in the coming year.
In 2015, I look forward to the further development of our soldiers and leaders. Already this year we have conducted two leadership schools, Warrior Lead-
ership Course Class 15-01 and Advanced Leadership Course Class 15-02. These soldiers spent 3-6 hours in the classroom to develop themselves on how to be
better leaders in our unit so they can continue to develop the soldiers they lead everyday! This is the commitment these soldiers swore as Non Commissioned
Officers to do and uphold.
I look forward to the growth of our realism unit and the community around us in the year of 2015. With the quick growth of our America's Army platoon
and the strong dedication of our soldiers in Arma, I see no reason why we can't continue to grow and develop our soldiers and future enlistees and continue to
show the realism community what the 3rd Infantry Division Realism Unit has to offer for the next year!
We as soldiers in this unit have a lot of work ahead of us for 2015. In 2015 our great unit turns 12 years old, which is no small task for an online gaming
community. We also have some great soldiers returning from Leave of Absence and we look forward to having them back among our ranks on active duty sta-
tus. I will be pushing for greatness as I feel that is what this unit is! I ask every soldier in this unit to do the same and to push yourselves and your fellow battle
buddies! The sky is the limit for the 3rd Infantry Division Realism Unit in the year of 2015! Lets make it happen Soldiers! - War Eagle 6
SGM LONG (RET) AND MAJ LAFLASH 2006 - PFC LAFLASH, IRAQ
As a Second Lieutenant, Audie Murphy was awarded the Medal of Hon-
or for his actions in France, 1945, Jan. 26th. The military career of Audie Mur-
phy covered nine World War II campaigns fought by the 3rd Infantry Division:
Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, RomeArno, Southern France, Ardennes-
Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe. He lied about his age to enlist in the
United States Army on June 30, 1942, and before his 20th birthday had
earned every U.S. Army combat award for valor available during his period of
service, including the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Colmar Pocket on
Jan. 26, 1945. Second Lieutenant Murphy commanded Company B, which was
attacked by six tanks and waves of infantry. Murphy ordered his men to with-
draw to prepared positions in woods, while he remained forward at his com-
mand post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone.
Behind him, to his right, one of our tank destroyers received a direct hit
and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. Murphy continued to
direct artillery fire which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infan-
try. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, Murphy climbed on the
burning tank destroyer, which was in danger of blowing up at any moment,
and employed its .50 caliber machinegun against the enemy. He was alone
and exposed to German fire from three sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens
of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, los-
ing infantry support, began to fall back. For an hour the Germans tried every
available weapon to eliminate Murphy, but he continued to hold his position
and wiped out a squad which was trying to creep up unnoticed on his right
flank. Germans reached as close as 10 yards, only to be mowed down by his
fire. He received a leg wound, but ignored it and continued the single-handed
fight until his ammunition was exhausted. He then made his way to his com-
pany, refused medical attention and organized the company in a counter-
attack, which forced the Germans to withdraw. His directing of artillery fire
wiped out many of the enemy; he killed or wounded about 50. Murphy's in-
domitable courage and his refusal to give an inch of ground saved his compa-
ny from possible encirclement and destruction, and enabled it to hold the
woods which had been the enemy's objective. Source

SPC D.Cantu Reporting
The 3rd Infantry Division Headquarters uncased their colors during a cer-emony at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, Dec. 7th. Around 200 Soldiers from the Marne Division have become part of the 9,800 U.S. troops that will remain in Afghanistan after NATO's International Security Assistance Force mission ends, Dec. 31. As Operation Enduring Freedom draws to an end this month, the mission will change to a non-combat Resolute Support Mission. The divi-sion's responsibilities will include logistical, medical, sustainment, signal and fuel support across Afghanistan, as well as the physical security at Bagram Air-field. Most of these roles will allow 3rd ID Soldiers a chance to work closely with not just Service members from other branches of the U.S. Military, but a chance to work hand-in-hand with many of our allied partners. The mission will shift focus to emphasize the pro-cesses and systems that will enable the Afghans to sustain their security forces and pro-tect their people for the long-term. Source
