This past month, Thumbstall Quilt Guild hosted a marathon sew day from 11:30am to 9:00pm at the Marcellus Library. They sewed quilts for the McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center in Syracuse. The center brings all essential services for abused children under one roof in a non-threatening child focused environment. As a child is preparing to leave the center, they are given a quilt or blanket, offering them a measure of comfort. They guild has partnered with McMahon/Ryan to provide as many quilts as possible. While patterns may vary, the initial focus of our quilts is the pinwheel. A symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention, it is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright future all children deserve. The guild met at the library on February 28 putting together 6 quilts for the beginning of this project. Guild members will be working on additional quilts on their own. In the past, they have gathered at the library and made Quilts of Valor for returning war vets, pillowcases for the children at the Seals Community Center on Syracuse's south side, memory bags for local hospitals, and bibs for Alzheimer’s patients at area nursing homes. The goal of the Thumbstall Quilt Guild is to reach out to the local community by providing the warmth and love of a handmade quilt.
