..THE HISTORY OF KISPEST..

The 19th district of the capital, Kispest lies on the south-eastern part of Budapest.Its quarters are the garden city, called Wekerle, Kispest Dormitory, Suburb of Kispest, Upper

Kispest and Traditional Kispest. 

Kispest is a 131-year-old district, which was connected to Budapest on January 1st 1950. It has nearly 70 thousand inhabitants.

 The story of the district dates back to the times before the the Hungarian conquest.

Archaeologists revealed here a Sarmatian grave from the 4th century, an Avar cemetery from the 6-9th centuries, and church foundations from the Árpád-age.

..KISPESTI DEÁK FERENC HIGH SCHOOL..

Our school, the Kispesti Deák Ferenc High School can be found in the centre of Wekerle, Kispest.  

Though our high school’s building doesn’t fit in with the architectural environment of Wekerle, its nicely kept park, walking yard, well-maintained sport grounds ensure a pleasant suburbian mood.

..THE PAST – VALUABLE HERITAGE PRESERVED IN TIME..

The most famous part of Kispest is the hundred-year-old Wekerle district, an internationally renowed representative of the graden city movement.

It is a world of unique atmosphere, a strange mixture made up of the coloured window shutters of its houses based on a variety of standard designs still representing a uniform style and

diagonal roads lined with trees.The unique character of the district is the result of its intact beauty and the architectural genius

behind its design, having created a wonderful mixture of simplicity and the traditions of Hungarian rural architecture.

The garden city design ensures quality living conditions in a human-scale environment instead of a housing estate made up of boring rows uniform buildings.

..THE PRESENT – DIVERSE URBAN SPACE..

One of the characteristics of Kispest is the fact that rather than a single traditional centre, it has several functional centres, an eloquent testimony of its diversity.

With its library, schools, shops, law court and local market, the Kossuth square is the cultural hub of the district.

The mayor’s office is at the Városház square.In addition to the Kós Károly and the Templom squares, this square has traditionally hosted

various district events.The third neighbourhood with central functions, also a sacred ground, is the Templom square

and its vicinity with the buildings of the major established religions.

..THE FUTURE – A MODERN KISPEST..

Due to its geographical location, Kispest serves as the major eastern gateway between the inner city, the outer districts and the conurbation.

This central location provides the basis for the dynamism of developement: this is where the main road network as well as tram and bus lines are linked with the inner districts and the

underground.By virtue of its functions in commerce, services, recreation and tourism, the city gate as a

multifunctional urban fabric will be able to satisfy the needs of both the local community and those who in the past commuted across Kispest without stopping.

This new centre will determine the 21-century look of modern Kispest.

Links between Kispest development projects and the South Pest region:People arriving by rail or road from other towns will arrive at a quality area, worthy of the image

of Budapest;The new developments of the city gate and the new district centre will attract services formerly only available in downtown districts, which can benefit the entire population of South Pest: the higher-quality services and recreational facilities of the new centre will serve the whole region;By virtue of its new development projects, Kispest will also encourage the development of more

peripheral districts;The development of Kispest intermodal traffic links will improve the accessibility of

Pestszentlőrinc, Pestszentimre, the settlements in the southeast conurbation as well as of the Ferihegy international airport;

Due to the transversal link, the new district centre will be organically connected to the recreational/tourist developments of the Ráckeve-Soroksár arm of the Danube.
