1. What are the key factors to consider for leveraging a software solution to deliver demonstrably better EHSQ results and deliver value to the company?

2. With so many options, what are the critical success criteria for selecting the right solution partner? Before we address these questions directly, let’s look at your challenges

and what may have led you to this point.

Why it MattersLives, Reputations and Enterprise Value are at Stake.

Today, Manufacturers are under consistent pressure from rising stakeholder expectations. They range from protecting the well-being of workers and the environment, to ensuring compliance in the face of rapidly-evolving global requirements while supporting the mass production of materials.

Success in business means more Manufacturers are taking the journey to sustainability and operational excellence to overcome for the impacts their operations have on the environment and worker health as well as ensuring the continued production of their products.

The successful deployment and adoption of EHSQ software can advance this journey by streamlining processes, engaging workers, and providing insights that enable proactive actions – while reducing costs and greatly enhancing EHSQ outcomes.

Recognizing that you must execute your critical function with constrained resources yet deliver against high expectations, this guide seeks to answer two important questions:

EHS, Operations, Maintenance

and Quality need to share

information and communicate

to ensure compliance with

environmental and safety

regulations, permits, policies

and procedures. Any lack of

collaboration can result in

shutting down production due

to quality defects, unplanned

maintenance, or incidents.

Sustainability and Operational Excellence Meet Budget RealitySustainability and operational excellence have

become interrelated strategic pillars within

Manufacturing. Your executives are focused on

building strong core values and corporate cultures

around supporting management systems, standards

like Smart Manufacturing, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.

These are the programs that drive continuous

improvement and ensure long-term license to

operate. But what do these seemingly nebulous

concepts have to do with EHSQ? Let’s look at some

useful definitions and examples. LNS Research

defines Corporate Sustainability as: “The set of

leadership, business process, culture, and technology

capabilities an organization establishes to maintain

its social license for conducting business in a

particular community.” DuPont emphasizes

sustainability in their

Corporate Purpose Statement: “DuPont is a science

company. We work collaboratively to find

sustainable, innovative, market-driven solutions

to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges,

making lives better, safer, and healthier for people

everywhere.”1 DuPont describes a Mission of:

“Sustainable Growth - the creation of shareholder

and societal value while we reduce the

environmental footprint along the value chains in

which we operate.” This “footprint” is defined as, “All

injuries, illnesses, incidents, waste, emissions, use of

water and depletable forms of raw materials and

energy.” Turning to the other interrelated corporate

priority of Operational Excellence, or the continuous

improvement of corporate execution to drive

improved performance against objectives, the link to

EHSQ is also apparent.

Page 5: MANUFACTURERS’ EHSQ BUYER’S GUIDE - BLRinteractive.blr.com/Global/FileLib/EHSDA_Campaigns/manufacturing... · Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Ergonomics, and Quality are all

5

According to LNS Research, because of increased regulatory,

societal, and social realities (including consumer demographics social

media) EHS has been transformed from being reactive to being

necessarily proactive:

“More than ever before, adverse events can immediately throw

a wrench in the gears of an organization, both operationally and

financially. As a consequence, leading companies today have grasped

that EHS is a key pillar to enterprise Operational Excellence (OpEx),

and are incorporating it into their business plans.” 2

McWane executives have solidified

these concepts by creating a program

that moves beyond compliance and is

rich in training and education, “By inte-

grating our EHS efforts with human re-

sources functions, McWane is also cre-

ating a corporate culture with a shared

commitment by corporate and plant

management, environmental, safety

and human resources professionals,

and every team member that not only

supports but demands excellence.”

Page 6: MANUFACTURERS’ EHSQ BUYER’S GUIDE - BLRinteractive.blr.com/Global/FileLib/EHSDA_Campaigns/manufacturing... · Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Ergonomics, and Quality are all

But even in highly committed organizations, much of the burden falls on EHSQ professionals. Your role is critical to driving toward sustainability and operational excellence.

6

You need to be a visionary, but of a different kind. The world you live in is the land of the worst-case scenario. The land of what-could- go-wrong. And the stakes are even higher for Manufacturers:

Many, if not most, EHSQ professionals are in this business because that’s

where their passions run – others may enjoy providing great customer

service or making a big sale, but you are driven to contribute to a more

sustainable manufacturing environment, spotless compliance records, getting

employees home safely, reducing environmental impacts, and ensuring the

production of safe defect-free products.

And everyone owes a greater debt

to your passion for excellence than

they probably understand. After

all, if somebody didn’t constantly

stress about the environment,

health, safety, and quality, the

company would suffer when those

tragic and costly scenarios come

true for your organization.

Within ESHQ functions, it’s easy to

feel that you’re continually getting

more and more asked of you: new

regulations to comply with, new company processes to own, and the list goes

on. These challenges come in the face of tight or shrinking budgets and in the

heat of competition for scarce corporate investment resources. And while

that’s admirable, your passion and expertise could do so much more if there

were a better way to harness it.

If somebody didn’t constantly stress about the environment, health, safety, and quality, the company would suffer when those tragic and costly scenarios come true for your organization.

What is Possible? The fact is, more is expected and more is possible for the EHSQ function today. Compliance and risk avoidance are still incredibly important, but you can do much more than that.

Technology now makes it possible to harness cutting edge software,

secure cloud, mobility, and powerful analytics to engage employees,

connect supply chains, and automate processes. It also provides insights

that free EHSQ professionals to be more strategic and proactive in

advancing their journey to sustainability and operational excellence. The

impact is meaningful to the bottom line.

Companies with exemplary

EHSQ programs outperformed

the S&P 500 average by 3-5%8

With such an opportunity to leverage technology, there comes a big

decision – what is the right software choice to help you get there? And

what are the key considerations for that choice? You might be surprised,

with so much focus on technology, that the right solution is about much

more than software.

Three Critical Factors for Assuring EHSQ Software Success

Whether your approach is a point solution for

Management of Change at one site, Incident

Management for a region, or a comprehensive

platform to manage EHSQ information across

the department, site, region, or world, it is

imperative you find a functional fit. This fit is not

only important now, but you must also consider

the future evolution of your organization,

changing regulations, and innovations that may

provide ongoing program improvements and

system performance.

Configure vs. CustomizeWhen looking at software options, consider

the implications of configuration versus

customization. Will you have to acquire and

support the IT infrastructure lifecycle and

ongoing associated cost of change? How will

future upgrades work and how much will they

cost? Is there customization required to meet

your needs or can you gain key functionality

“out-of-the-box”?

Mobilizing Your WorkforceMobility and mobile extensions to platform in

support of operational excellence programs

becoming a requirement in all purchasing

decisions. It’s not a surprise. According

Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility Barometer – State

of Mobility in Manufacturing, mobile workers

saved or recovered an average of 42 minutes

per day. This is in addition to the other benefits

including; enhanced data collection for real-time

decision-making and improved communication

across the organization.

Finding a functional fit may be challenging, but it’s critical.

1 Finding the Right Software Functional Fit

Page 11: MANUFACTURERS’ EHSQ BUYER’S GUIDE - BLRinteractive.blr.com/Global/FileLib/EHSDA_Campaigns/manufacturing... · Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Ergonomics, and Quality are all

11

Every EHSQ software company employs industry

experts and most will claim a depth of experience

in your specific industry. Every vendor also

employs competent software engineers and

product managers who seek to understand client

needs and build the best software that they can.

Today’s software development and operations

technology – including public and private clouds,

security, database scalability, etc. – are starting

to converge. Software companies cannot

differentiate on tools and processes alone. That’s

why you need reliable manufacturer specific

references as well. These references will confirm

their expertise when it comes to manufacturing

specific (purpose-built workflows, best practices,

templates, industry standard reports, user

shortcuts)? Or rather, have requirements been

interpreted by a software specialist ‘doing their

best’ to understand?

You might want to check to see if their website

contains manufacturing specific content in the

form of blog posts and whitepapers?

The fact is, Environmental, Occupational

Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Ergonomics,

and Quality are all highly specialized areas

that require deep domain expertise to truly

automate and drive value.

Buyer beware: if your vendor is

ready to just take your order (your

requirements document) and

build it or give you a ‘tool kit’ to

develop your EHSQ application,

consider the full implications over

the lifecycle of your platform

Over 11% of Cority's client base is in manufacturing

accounting for some of those with large global

operations such as Siemens, Logan Aluminum, 3M,

Owens-Corning and more.

2 Choosing a Software Expert or an EHSQ Expert

Page 12: MANUFACTURERS’ EHSQ BUYER’S GUIDE - BLRinteractive.blr.com/Global/FileLib/EHSDA_Campaigns/manufacturing... · Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Ergonomics, and Quality are all

12

Is the software you are considering instilled with expertise of EHSQ professionals who have walked in your shoes?

Page 13: MANUFACTURERS’ EHSQ BUYER’S GUIDE - BLRinteractive.blr.com/Global/FileLib/EHSDA_Campaigns/manufacturing... · Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Ergonomics, and Quality are all

13

Selecting the right software to fit your needs and a vendor that offers deep domain expertise is difficult enough.

Now recognize the stark reality of enterprise software failure:

We all know that no matter

what a software solution can

offer, it cannot be realized if the

implementation or adoption of

the solution fails. The commercial

software landscape is riddled

with project failures. Delays and

misunderstandings are sadly the

norm. And it’s not uncommon

for expensive software to

gather dust on a shelf when an

implementation falls short.

The critical consideration here is

your chosen vendor’s track record

of deployment and adoption

success. What is their deployment

methodology? Ask for proof and

examples. Determine if they

understand what can go wrong

and how to mitigate that.

Are they clear on the expectations

of you and your organization or

do they just want a quick sale?

Seek out industry experts and

multiple references.

14

Finally, ask them two critical questions:

1. What is your track record of

deployment success?

2. What is your client retention

rate (asked another way, what

percentage of your clients churn

each year)?

For Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

software companies, the industry

average for deployment success is

91%9. Look for the companies that

deliver clients into production

successfully and consistently and then

work to keep their clients satisfied and

successful. And remember that every

vendor – even the worst at delivering

clients successfully to production and

gaining user adoption – will have ‘go-

to’ references to back up their claims.

Dig deeper.

Finally, be diligent about who you’ll be

working with once contracts

are signed. Vendors often put their

best foot forward in the sales cycle,

then offload to less qualified people

after the sale. Who will be on your

actual team? What experience and

credentials do they have? What is their

customer satisfaction rating?

Look for the companies that deliver clients into production successfully and consistently and then work to keep their clients satisfied and successful.

dynamics of a constantly changing

industry. Whether it be a new

EU Directive, OSHA rule or EPA

regulation, the ground we stand on

is constantly shifting. SaaS makes it

easier to stay current with changes.

model is greatly simplified and

enhanced, Our popular user

community allows for peer-support
