My goal as a teacher is to provide the best environment in which students will be able to learn the skills and knowledge needed for success. School is not just for scholastic development, it also includes emotional and social development. All three components are needed for a complete education. My job as an educator is to guide students in acquiring the necessary skills to help them become productive members of society. In order for education to be beneficial, there need to be set guidelines for the classroom that need to be followed. This way, the classroom will run smoothly and be beneficial for all.

An effective classroom will be one with minimal confusion and abundant opportunities for students learning. It will be shaped with everyday enriching routines that promote interactions and organization. Students will be given a set of expectations for what is suitable in order to institute a positive classroom environment. As a flexible educator I feel it will be more beneficial for the students, if together we brainstorm additional rules. We will then discuss why it is important to have such rules followed by concrete examples like role playing. In the classroom, the students will be aware of what I expect from them.

Principles of management

The principle for the classroom must be detailed in order to prevent student misconduct. I am committed to making my classroom challenging as well as safe. I aim to engage my students through the curriculum and interacting with them one on one. Student needs are crucial in my classroom. I want my students to be comfortable with others students and with me. I want to encourage all my students to participate in class in order to learn from each other as well as from me. I want to motivate students to learn and keep their attention through engaged learning. I want to include students in the creation of classroom rules and give them a sense of responsibility in what goes on in the classroom. I believe that is students fell that they have a part in the workings of the classroom, they will be more motivated to engage in the class and learn.

Classroom management is the foundation of a cooperative classroom. If a child isdisruptive they will then endure the consequences implemented with four step consequences. The first step will be a warning and the fourth step will be a conference with the parents or guardians of that child where their problem as well as a possible solution will be discussed .

Classroom Rules:

1. On the first day of class, students will be given a chance to develop the classroom rules ( classroom constitution), with my guidance.

2. Students will copy the classroom rules onto a piece of paper and sign it acknowledging their agreement and it will be kept for my records. I will also hang the classroom rules on the bulletin board for all to see.

3. I will type up a copy of the classroom rules and send it home with students for parents to review and sign. It will also be collected for records.

4. I will use a combination of positive and negative reinforcement. If a child has good behavior for the day, they will be rewarded with a star. I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement because I believe that by rewarding a child for a good behavior I am letting them know that they have met my expectations for behavior. When a child collects five stars for five days of the week they will receive a treat on the last day of the week, Friday.

5. The classroom will be arranged into groups. I believe in cooperative learning. That way, students can learn from each other and still be graded for their individual work. The groups that follow directions and do their work will be rewarded. Some of the rewards can include free homework pass, extra points on quiz, being first to line up or hand out papers. If a group as a whole misbehaved, minutes can be deducted from their gym or recess and may have to do extra work during that time.

6. If specific students continually misbehave, they will get three warnings. After the third warning, I will keep them from gym or recess and talk to them. We will sit down and try to figure out what happened, why they did it, and how they can improve their behavior and what they think their punishment be if they did it again. They usually come up with a much harsher punishment than we would think of. If the behavior still continues, I will schedule a meeting with the parents and the student.

6. I will also have the daily schedule on the board for students to see. This way they will know where we are at during the school day.

7. I will periodically scaffold during group work to make sure that they understand what is going on and that everyone is doing their part. There will definitely be individual work, but mainly group work because I have noticed from my experience that a mixture of both work gets the best results. There are some students who work best alone while others understand better in groups. This way we can accommodate both types of learners.

During the first week, I will call the parents and make sure that hey did receive the classroom rules and if they had any questions for me. I will also explain to them that they are an important part of their student’s education and that there are after school programs to help their children if they ever needed them. I will also tell them that I am always willing to meet with them if they have any questions. They just need to call the office and make an appointment.

Management philosophyMy role as a teacher is to be a positive role model. I would like to be a felicitator. I am anopen constructivist that works well for me. An example of Classroom Constitution:

When students are involved in making their own rules, they establish ownership of the rules and view them as their own. A society needs laws to be civilized and our classroom is our mini society with it‘s laws. It can be our mini constitution. We will create a constitution to demonstrate how students should behave in our society. Some of the sample rules can include:

Keep your hands and feet to yourselfRaise your hand if you need to talk or get up and wait for permissionTreat others as you would want to be treatedBring all needed supplies to class

We can also add detailed mini-rules that are obvious but can serve as a reminder. The classroom rules are like a constitution and can be changed with a majority vote, but the teacher must approve the change, they can’t override the decision. Students need to know the rules in order to follow them. The rules will change as needed and everyone will get a chance to vote on the rules unless I see them as important and necessary fort he classroom to run smoothly.

Classroom duties and student duties

The classroom will be arranged in groups of five or six students depending on number of students. My desk will be at the front of the classroom and I will constantly walk around the classroom making sure everyone is doing their work properly. I can’t sit at my desk

more than a few minutes. I guess I just got used to it. It also ensures that all students are doing their work because they know that hey are periodically checked. Each group has a person who passes and collects papers, another who makes sure that the group area is clean. They can rotate duties ensuring that every student gets a chance to participate. They give students a greater role in their classroom. These rules and duties make them more responsible for the classroom and give them a greater sense of community. It also saves time for instruction and less passing out papers and cleaning up at the end of the day.

The classroom is a learning environment that should make students comfortable enough to learn and be able to ask questions and converse with their peers through group interactions. In order for that to occur without disrupting the classroom, there need to be set guidelines that govern the classroom. I also believe in hands on activities when possible. Students need to have order in for fun education to occur. The students know that and follow the rules. In the event that they aren’t able to do that, a few days without their groups and lots of dittos will surely change that. I believe that students should have fun when learning but if they aren’t able to maintain proper classroom etiquette, I can be strict and by the book. That is my last option. I believe that when students are engaged in their own learning and are given choices in the workings of their classroom that they will have fun and learn better. When students learn something differently, they seem to retain it longer. There are many new and innovative ways of teaching various subjects and I intend to try them out for my classroom. I intend to keep my class on its toes and keep them guessing what we are going to learn next and how we are going to do it. It keeps them engaged and interested and that is the best way to learn.

Procedures and Routines:Beginning the school day:As students arrive to the class a morning message will be on the blackboard. Studentswill have 10-15 minutes depending on what is to be done. This is reinforcing the lessontaught throughout the weeks. Sometimes the morning message will be a way assessingprior knowledge.Other activities will include:• The lunch menu• Calendar• Upcoming events• Job chart• Bulletin board• Behavior chart

Leaving the room:Before students are to leave the room I will instruct them to put away their instructionalmaterials then I will ask call them according to number order to quietly line up. Howeverif we are walking in the hall way I will ask the students to:• Put their hands at their sides• Walk in a straight orderly line• Do not touch anything that could be possibly hanging on the walls

• Students are to raise their hand if they would like to go use the bathroom or drinkwater• There will be a job chart for students to help around the classroom• Students will be called according to number order to line up• Line leader will be selected to model to the students appropriate behavior

How classroom rules and expectations for behavior are established:I will discuss my expectations with the students. Then the students and I will brainstormpossible rules for the class.• Record suggestions• Place suggestions into categories, tweaking them• Finally we will role play the decided rule• Go over safety roles• Time management• Minimize chaosI will emphasize the positive parts of the rules rather than just focusing on the negative. Iwill reward them if they follow the rules appropriately.

Non Negotiable classroom rules:• Be prepared• Listen and follow directions• Respect self and others• Listen quietly while teacher or others are speaking• We follow all school rules

Building/ district rules:• No running in the halls• All guests must sign in to the main office

Parental Involvement:It is essential to have parents involved throughout the year, to make sure that their childhas a successful year. In the beginning of the year parents will receive a letter statingwhat my expectations are for the school year and parent involvement will be stressed.These are some ways they can be involved:• Parent-Teacher Conferences (each making period)• Volunteering (field trips, special projects, etc.)• Parent Day( Various days where parents are welcomes to come and spend an houror two with the class)• Open house• Weekly letter• Calling list• Email• Positive phone calls

Letters/ Progress Reports

Each student will have a planner in which they will write their homework and what they worked on that day so that parents will know what their children did that day of they chose to review it at home. The parents will sign it and students will bring it in the next day. Parent letters will be sent out at the beginning of each month explaining what students will be doing that month and how they can help them at home. There will also be comments about students progress weekly on their planners. Some tests will also be sent home to be viewed and signed. There will also be a monthly progress report sent home. It will include their progress in each subject, have at least two positive comments and include any concerns. If a meeting is needed, I will indicate that on the report. I will also be sure to call all the parents at least once a month with positive comments as well as talk about what they can do improve their students’ education. I believe in commenting on the good things that students do before the bad, especially if that student has low grades or behavior problems. This really raises their self esteem and makes their parents proud and they won’t dread the monthly phone calls.

Physical layout of the classroom:In my classroom I will have:

• Teacher and student’s desks• Back table• Book cases• Computers-technology centers• Center area• Bulletin Board• Word wall• Fish tank• Carpet• Author’s chair• Literacy centers• Math center• Science center-plants, magnifying glasses• Storage cabinets• Library• Over head projector• Permethen board• Paper shelves• Writing utensils storage

My class will be:

• Traffic free-separate group work areas from other concentrated Ares likewater fountains

• Students will be easily seen at all times depending on the type of teaching you do will will affect room layout.• Each table will have a try of supplies for students ranging from pencils to scissors,crayons and markers.• Students’ tables are arranged in circular patterns to make visibility of thechalkboard, bulletin board, overhead projector and screen.

Plan to deal with disruptive student behaviors:A disruptive student will go thought four disciplinary steps before their parents are tobe asked to come in. All students start the day with green cards and it’s all up to themif they would like to get punished or rewarded.• 1st Step : Verbal warning• 2nd step: They are to go to behavior chart and flip their card into yellowWhen students fail to respond to verbal warning, they flip their cards and they get tomiss five minutes of recess.• 3rd step: They must flip their card to red. Student will lose entire recess and do work instead. I will also make a phone call home if student continue to misbehave.• 4th step: A phone call home. If the student is misbehaving daily then thiswill involve a conference including the teacher, student and parent or guardian.The conference will focus on the importance of the guidances that were notfollowed and the choices and promises that the students will make.Rewards When rules are followed each day a student can earn• 1 star sticker• 20 stars=a prize they can choose• A marble gar for reward when its filled there will be a pizza party• Homework pass for students that earn 20 stars• Call home: child is doing good

Lesson Plan

Lesson plans will be modified and arrangements will be made for the special ED students to accommodate their needs.• Students with visual disability will be moved closer to board• Students with dyslexic disability will get special books to help them.• Students with span attention will be seated up front.• Students that are bilingual will have a modified lesson plan
