  • FST FORUMSWho Was The Real Louise Seger?by Mary Donofrio

Always...Patsy Cline is the story of an unlikely connection between Cline and Louise Seger, one of her biggest fans. While many people know about Patsy’s life and career, Louise lived a fascinating life as well. The real Louise Seger was born on May 31, 1932 in Jackson, Mississippi to Fred and Ruby Everett, and developed a love for music thanks to her step-father, Dick Alexander, who was a popular bandleader and musician along the Gulf Coast. At seventeen, Louise was voted Miss Biloxi. As a part of her prize, she went on tour with the popular country radio show “Louisiana Hayride,” even striking up a friendship with Grand Ole Opry legend Little Jimmy Dickens. After graduating college, Louise moved to Houston. She worked a variety of jobs from the oil industry, modeling, singing, and even owned a nightclub in Houston for a time. A mother of two, Louise met Patsy not long after her divorce from her first husband. As immortalized in Always...Patsy Cline, they remained in touch for the rest of Cline’s life through phone calls and letters, with Seger often getting calls in the late hours of the evening. In 1961, when Patsy got into the car accident that left her in the hospital for a month, Louise wrote her every single day. In an interview with Country Weekly Magazine, she recalled the last time she saw Cline after another performance in Houston. “I told her I was getting married and moving to Brazil,” said Seger. “She said, ‘Louise, you’ve got to be crazy.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you might be right.’ The last glimpse I have of Patsy in my mind was after the Houston show,” Seger continued. “She held up a bottle of bourbon, winked and said, ‘I’ll see you, hoss.’” Louise moved to a remote area in Brazil, and when her impending marriage fell through, she stayed there with her children, enrolling them in school there. It wasn’t until she heard of Cline’s death that she made plans to return back to the States. Louise never shied away from talking about her relationship with Patsy, and gave many interviews over the years. Always...Patsy Cline was written based on the stories she told author Ellis Nassour for his book Honky Tonk Angel: The Intimate Story of Patsy Cline. Louise passed away on October 28, 2004, and is remembered fondly by many friends and fans.

Nashville to New York by Rebecca Leap For many musicals, success is defined by a Broadway marquee, but Broadway is far from the only place a show can thrive. Few musicals demonstrate this quite so well as Always… Patsy Cline, which began its life in the heartland of America and spent nearly a decade gaining steam before finding the lights of New York City.

In 1988, Ted Swindley was the Artistic Director of Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, and he desperately needed a show to put on his stage. After happening upon an interview with Texas housewife Louise Seger, he discovered not only a Cline connection to the Houston area, but the heart of a show that would one day capture hearts from Atlanta to Australia.

The original production, which hit the stage in October of that year, was a modest one-act cabaret performance, but the response from local audiences was anything but. The play was a bona-fide hit with local audiences, though Swindley was dubious of any broader appeal. “I thought the show would be one with a little local appeal for Houston audiences,” Swindley told Houston Press in 2013, “but [I] soon found out that Patsy is a huge star and the story of her friendship with Louise is universal.” Just how universal, though, he could have never guessed.

Swindley returned to his script two years later at a theatre in South Carolina, when it began to take shape as the

full-length musical audiences know today. After adding ten

new songs and an act break, audiences raved as much as ever. With so much success, Swindley dedicated himself to the show, which caught the eye of executives from the Grand Ole Opry, who caught a performance of the show in Atlanta.

Following a one-night-only performance at the Grand Ole Opry House in 1993, a full-scale production was mounted in Nashville a year later. The Nashville production received an encore run the following summer, while the rest of the country was also catching on to Swindley’s sleeper hit. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts opened the show at their Garner Galleria Theatre in August of 1995. Chicago’s Northlight Theatre began their own run in 1996. And finally, on June 24, 1997, Always… Patsy Cline found its Off-Broadway home at the Variety Arts Theatre, where it received rave reviews and ran for 192 performances.

In the twenty-plus years since Always... Patsy Cline closed Off-Broadway, it has become a staple in regional theatres all over the world. From Australia to the UK to right here in Sarasota, FL, Seger and Cline’s friendship and Patsy’s timeless tunes continue to enchant audiences, and will keep casting their spell for years to come.

DENNIS & GRACI MCGILLICUDDY FST is important to us because we believe so strongly in the transformative power of the arts. For close to 30 years now, we have been so fortunate to experience first-hand how that transformative power works its magic in the hands of an organization that is not only experienced and dedicated but so highly skilled in their craft. The values of the theater and its leadership, as reflected in its mission, and as manifested in its work, whether it be on the mainstage, in the cabaret, in its education and community outreach programs: these are values that we so strongly believe in. As a consequence, it is a privilege for us to be a part of, and supportive of this great theater.

ANNE H.S. NETHERCOTT When asked to define giving, Anne said: “My mother used to say the best way to find you is to lose yourself, by focusing on the needs of others rather than on oneself.” So giving has always been an important family value, which in childhood was reinforced by the community experience of surviving the Depression. Anne is proud to be a supporter of FST.

ARNOLD SIMONSEN & RONDA MONTMINY Florida Studio Theatre is far ahead of any theatre in Sarasota. We try to see every play as the actors are truly professional. Richard Hopkins deserves much credit for the success of FST.

We encourage you to take photos of the set and share to social media! We just ask that you please recognize the scenic designers:
