Un paseo en SKATEBOARDIntroducción

Entrevista

Hoy he patinado.

In this edition, we are going to take a skateboard ride with 21-year-old Roberto Montaño, born in Alhama de Murcia, who has been skateboar-ding since he was 12. He works as a volunteer at a day centre for young people with behavioural problems and is currently preparing to take the entrance exam for a degree in social integration. But, he assures us, he will never give up his ska-teboard, even if it is just to get around town on a hot summer’s night.

Interview

How did you first get into SKATEBOARDING?

R.M: When I was about 9 or 10 I saw the film “Lords of Dogtown” and I was gripped. I began skateboar-ding when I was 12, because I was given a board as a reward for passing an exam... and I was attracted by punk music, the movement in Murcia and skate-board videos on online media.

How did you find skateboarding when you first started?R.M: We were really motivated, a group of around 10 of us went out every day to skateboard together around Murcia town centre. I say this because I am from Alhama and I caught, well, I catch the train al-most every day to skate in the town. We even meet up to skateboard in other street environments, such as Alicante or Barcelona. I have been to Barcelona several times. It is one of the best cities in Spain for skateboarding because of its infrastructure, its squares, marble curbs, steps and open spaces. Its skateparks are of excellent quality and varied, so we can do a lot of tricks.

A SKATEBOARDrideIntroduction

How do you think you have evolved in the sport and what is it like now?R.M: I have been skateboarding for 10 years. I was very motivated at first, spending two hours a day doing it. This dropped off a little generally later, for me, for the sport and for the group, but now there is new blood, youngsters of 14 to 16 years old, who have entered the sport with a lot of energy, driving us and reawakening the desire we had a few years ago to continue skating at a high level and to conti-nue enjoying it.

What have been your influences, how have you learned and developed the different tricks with your skateboard?R.M: I watched the older skateboarders in the Barnés (Murcia) skatepark. I followed the real ska-teboard scene closely at that time. There was an association called “Los Perros Skateboarding Mur-cia”, which organised regional competitions and set up skateboard modules in squares so people could practice. They did all this for free and they even awarded prizes (sports equipment) to the winners of the competitions. Naturally, through the online vi-deos you can watch and learn many tricks. It’s just a matter of practicing them and mastering them.

How do skateboarders get on together? Is there a friendly community, is there rivalry or do you all support each other?R.M: I have met many people. You connect with other people who skateboard. There is a healthy ri-valry, you can admire a skilful move, you applaud it even though someone else did it.

What is it that connects music, urban art and ska-teboarding?R.M: Rock music, punk, graffiti art and skateboar-ding are connected through the city, through rebe-llious, disconnected youth, as a way of expressing themselves.

Continuing with the theme of youth and rebe-lliousness, do you have any anecdotes or have you faced any problems while skateboarding?R.M: I could tell you many stories. One comes to mind of when a policeman fined me for skateboar-ding aggressively. I told him I always skated like that any I had never been fined before. I have also encountered people who have been somewhat aggressive, throwing eggs at me from some of the flats surrounding the squares where we often skate.

It is considered to be quite a risky sport. Have you suffered many injuries or hair-raising accidents?R.M: I have been lucky. The worst was a fractured tibia, and I broke my wrist after falling badly. People often tell us we are made of rubber, but in fact we learn how to fall.

Is it an expensive sport?R.M: The equipment is expensive (he says with a sigh). If you don’t need new wheels, you need a new board or new trainers. When you skateboard at a high level you wear out the equipment and it breaks easily. At most, a board can last me one month. I have broken boards on the first day I have used them.

At 21, has your enthusiasm for Skateboarding waned at all? Have you thought about giving it up or have you distanced yourself from it?R.M: It is always there, constantly, at times more intensely and at other times, less so. I have skate-boarded today.

We know you have achieved things with this sport. Tell us a little about your struggle to impro-ve and promote the sport.R.M: Well, for me it’s not a struggle, it is more a question of perseverance. I spent 6 years collec-ting signatures for a skatepark in Alhama. We finally achieved it and it was set up 2 years ago. It is sa-tisfying to have a place where we can skateboard freely. There are three skateparks in Murcia. They were very important for me when I started, but they are now neglected and run down. I’m involved in a few projects (he laughs).

Finally, where do you see this sport going in the near future?R.M: There are kids who are very much involved and I think they could have a great future in the ska-teboard world, but in Spain it is almost impossible to live off skateboarding. Only 4 out of every 1000 reach the top and an amazing level, but the sport itself is becoming more well-known and is more ac-cepted by people in general.

Thank you very much for you time and this enjo-yable interview.R.M: Thank you and Zenia Boulevard for this oppor-tunity for people to learn a little more about this sport.

Day 1 – Flight (approx. 4h.) MADRID – OSLOHotel check-in, and a brief stroll around the city. A good night’s rest in preparation for your adventure around Norway over the following days.

Day 2 – OSLO - LILLEHAMMER - DOMBASA wander through the immense Frogner park (one of Europe’s largest urban green spaces), to admire Gustav Vigeland’s sculpture arrangement, a collection of life-size human figures sculpted out of granite and bronze. Have fun surveying the sculptures in an array of curious poses. They are sure to leave quite an impression on you. We will visit the Bygdøy peninsula (still in Oslo) where we will travel back in time at the Viking Boat Museum with its three amazing original vessels, dating back over a thousand years.

On route to Dombas, we will stop off at Lillehammer, the city that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics. From the vantage point of the impressive ski jumps you can see the town and the enormous Lake Mjosa. It is well worth a brief detour. Continuing the journey, we can stop in Ringebu to visit its 12th century church. This is one of the world’s oldest wooden buildings and the original wood is still conserved.

Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the Flåm Train, one of the world’s prettiest railway journeys. It travels around Aurland fjord, climbing 860 metres above sea level to the moun-tain resort of Myrdal, and then returns to Flåm. During the hour-long journey, you can take in the fabulous landscape, its snow-capped peaks or lush green slopes, depending on the season, and be amazed at all the waterfalls that can be seen on almost every mountainside. We then drive on, through the kingdom of Voss, heading towards Bergen, the capital of the fjords.

In Bergen, the Bryggen (dock or pier) is a requi-red visit. Bryggen is the only commercial zone that remains from the Hanseatic period and has Unesco Heritage status.

In the evening, we will set out on our journey, skirting around the huge Handanger fjord with a valley surrounded by fruit trees and spectacular scenery, until we reach the end of the Eide fjord.

Day 7: EIDFJORD - OSLOWe will travel to Handargervidda plateau, the home of a national park of the same name, at a height of over 1000 metres and with a spectacular snowy landscape, which is almost lunar in appearance.

On the way, we will stop off to visit the majestic Vöringfossen waterfall. With a drop of 182 me-tres, it is the largest in Norway.

Returning to Oslo, we are treated to a landscape of hills and valleys, dotted with wooden farmsteads painted in the traditional colour of dark red.

Day 8: OSLO - MADRIDBefore your transfer to the airport, take the opportunity to visit the Museum of Cultural His-tory, an open-air museum located in Bygdøy. The museum’s 155 houses display the history and cul-ture of Norway’s different regions.

Day 6: BERGEN - HANDARGER - EIDFJORWe ascend mount Fløyen, a fantastic spot for en-joying panoramic views of the city of Bergen, but we will need to take the Fløibanen cable railway to get to the top, an unmissable ride lasting 7 mi-nutes. If there is time and you are accompanied by children, it is a good idea to descend on foot, as you will meet sculptures of trolls and elves along the path.

Day 3: DOMBAS - GEIRANGER - LOENWe begin the route looking out over the impressi-ve Slettafossen waterfalls before a drive along the breathtaking Troll Road (Trollstigen), that winds through some spectacular landscape.

We then continue to The Gudbrandsjuvet Gorge, halfway between Trollstigen and the centre of Va-lldal. There are a series of walkways and fenced bridges from which to view the roaring rivers and waterfalls.

We then cross the Nordfjord by ferry from Eidsdal to Linge and continue until we reach Geiranger,a picturesque and welcoming coastal village. From here we will take a one-hour mini cruise to Hellesylt, crossing the Geiranger Fjord, a Unesco listed site famous for its vertical mountainsides plunging into the deep waters of the fjord and its many waterfalls pouring from the mountains directly into the sea, such as the Brudesloret (Bri-de’s Veil) and the Syv Sostrene (Seven Sisters) waterfalls. We continue on our route towards Loen.

Day 4: LOEN - BOYABREE & NIGARDSBREEN GLACIERS - SOGNDALWe head towards the Fjaerland region to see the Boyabreen glacier and then on to the Sognefjord the longest fjord in Norway.

The route continues as far as the Nigardsbreen glacier, an arm of the Jostedal glacier, the largest in continental Europe, spanning almost 100km. It is a rare and magnificent experience to stand atop of a glacier. These are not the sort of places we come across every day, so having the chance to visit Norway’s most accessible glacier, is an opportunity not to be missed.

Llegó a Zenia Boulevard unos minutos después.

Writer s corner

He shot a sorrowful glance at the eyes loo-king back at him from the mirror. He ran those same eyes up and down the body that stood awaiting approval of its twin ima-ge. Everything was just right, the cinnamon coloured jacket, in beige and dark brown checks, over a cautious pale blue shirt de-corated with a brown and blue plant patter-ned tie, fastened in a large double Windsor knot. His long legs were encased in light brown trousers, with the outfit finished off with a pair of elegant chestnut brown and cream shoes which, despite the unusual two-tone combination, actually looked ex-tremely discreet. Gritting his teeth, he took a deep breath and, after a final turn this way and that to check both sides, he breathed out though his nose and, turning his back on the mirror, left his room in the hotel facing the sea. A few minutes later he arrived at Zenia Bou-levard. He parked his car in the car park and

riding up the escalator, disembarked in the Main Squa-re. He continued on his way up a brown tiled staircase, both flights giving him a beautiful panoramic view and, without further delay, made his way to the top floor res-taurant where he had a dinner reservation. The waiter received him in silence and took him to his table, left the menu and walked away. He unbuttoned his jacket and set down at the laid table. Once he had settled, he nodded a greeting while looking straight into the eyes looking straight into his from the chair oppo-site him. He smiled with a hint of tiredness, and a smile returned the tired expression. The waiter came back, quickly made a note of the order and went away, returning soon after with the chosen bottle of white wine, which he uncorked but did not ser-ve, before leaving again. And all without a single word being uttered. He poured wine into his glass. Opposite him, another glass received wine too. He raised his glass in a toast and the other was lifted too. “To you”, he said. “Becau-se there’s no-one else who matters more to me.” All through the evening he talked, at last saying out loud all the words he had been saying to himself for months, again and again under his breath, never letting them breathe the pure, fresh air of becoming sound. Word after word, sentence after sentence, fact after fact that was never a reproach, he said everything he knew he should have said before and that he had never dared say, in spite of knowing that not doing so was the best way of making everything he was now saying, at last, far worse. When he had finished, he asked for the bill, drained the last drop of white wine from his glass, left a few bank-notes, more than enough, on the table and got to his feet. He buttoned up his jacket, tugged at it a little with both hands, and, having composed himself, he turned away and walked out. Watching him go, the waiter went to the table, picked up the money, smiled when he saw the amount and, suddenly feeling free of the disagreeable unease cau-sed by the bizarre task entrusted to him, very carefully removed the mirror resting on the chair, which was cold and other wise unoccupied.

A story of friendship, of contemporary women who share their perspectives on love, friendship and hi-dden desires.

Olivia, after being left a widow, felt lost in her life. After living for years in the shadow of her husband, once he was gone, she didn’t recognise herself. She happened upon a small flower shop, the Angel’s Garden, where she took a job.

At the shop, she meets all sorts of women who stop by to buy flowers, but each for a completely different rea-son. One buys them for a secret lover, another to deco-rate her office, the third, to paint them, and the last, for her customers. Together they form a mixed group with diverse opinions on love, the family, work and friends-hip. All of them together need to face a radical change in their lives.

Mujeres que compran flores (Women who buy Flowers) is more than just a novel; it is a portrait of contemporary women, of their desires, their fears and their strengths. It is an adventure in search of the dreams of today’s woman. It is hard not to empathize with at least one of the characters, all of which are well defined and true to life, making the novel much more personal. Its simple, unpretentious prose invites you to enjoy this original, contemporary novel.

RecetasBuñuelos de VientoTípicos de Semana Santa

200 gr. de harina

100 gr. de azúcar

2 huevos

25 gr. de mantequilla

1/2 sobre de levadura

Ralladura de 1 limón

1 pizca de sal

1/2 vasito de vino blanco y aceite de oliva.

200g flour

100g sugar

2 eggs

25g butter

1/2 sachet baking powder

Lemon zest

Pinch salt

1/2 glass white wine and olive oil

Now heat the oil for frying the dough. Use a fr-ying pan or a saucepan. When the oil is hot, use a spoon add to small pieces of the dough to the oil.

Fry until rounded and golden brown. Remove the fritters from the oil and tip them onto absorbent kitchen paper to soak up any excess oil and then roll in sugar to coat.

METHOD:

In a deep bowl beat together the eggs, sugar, salt, lemon zest and butter.

Mix together the flour, baking powder and white wine and add to the previous mixture.

Beat everything together well. The dough should be of a firm texture and should not drip off the spoon.
