SODIUM LAURYL ETHERSULFATE [EIRI-1477]

The sodium salts are familiar as pastes withabout 30 percent of active material as driedextruded material, dried flakes or tray-driedpowder all of high concentration. For specialpurposes as for examples as a foaming agentand detergent in tooth-pastes free, unsulphatedalcohol is undesirable because of the flavour itimparts. For same exceptional cases sodiumsulphate is unwanted. Sodium sulphate can beeliminated by dissolving out the sodium laurylsulphate with hot ethyl alcohol or isopropylalcohol. These solvents also take the freeunsulphated alcohol into solution and afterevaporating off the solvent a final extraction withacetone will dissolve the free alcohol and leavepurified alkyl sulphate as the residue.

CONSTRUCTION CHEMICALS[EIRI-1476]

Construction Chemicals, as the name suggests, are the chemical compounds used in constructionactivities, be it residential, non-residential or non-building. These compounds belong to a nichespecialty segment of the chemical industry andcan be used either in existing constructionprojects to speed up the work or in newconstruction projects to impart durability andstrengthen the structures. Constructionchemicals increase the cost of the project by 2-5% but the benefits are multi-fold. Certainchemical products help in minimizing thequantities of cement and water used in theconstruction. These compounds impart chemicalas well as physical properties in applications suchas cross-linking or phase change (from liquid tosolid). Construction chemicals are essential forhigh quality concrete and for promoting theimprovement of concrete performance. They alsoincrease the life of construction work and impartadditional protection from environmental hazards.

LIQUID GLUCOSE ANDMALTODEXTRIN FROM

BROKEN RICE [EIRI-1472]Starch is a group of polysacchrides, composedof glucopyranose units joined together by-glucosidric linkages. It conforms to the molecularformula, (C6-H10O5)u, where n varies from afew hundred to over one million. Starch is foundas the reserve carbonhydrate in various partsof plants and is enzymatically broken down togluose to other erbohydrates according to themetabollic needs of the plants. Industrially, starchis broadly divided into two types viz, natural andmodified. Natural starches, also designated asunmodified starches or simply starches, areobtained from grains such as and sorghum. fromroots like potato, tapioca and arrow root, andfrom the pith of the stems of certain palms such

a sago. They are further classified into cerealstarches and root starches. The characteristicsof the natural starches are changed by chemicalor enzymatic action and the products of thesereactions are termed modified starches.

ETHYL METHACRYLATE[EIRI-1474]

Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA) is a key intermediatechemical, due to its ability to undergopolymerization and copolymerization.Polyacrylates, a family of clear and relativelydurable thermoplastics, are the major source forthe consumption of EMA. At the end of 2008,there were almost 50 ethyl methacrylatemanufacturing plants globally (some uncertaintyexists over the precise number of plants in Chinawhere the very small localized plants arescattered over a wide geography) with plant sizesranging from 1 500 to 360 000 metric tons peryear (3.3 to 794 million pounds EMA per year).EMA can be commercially manufactured by anumber of routes. The conventional EMAprocess centers on the reaction of hydrogencyanide (HCN) and acetone to give acetonecyanohydrin. The cyanohydrin then undergoesacid assisted hydrolysis and esterification withmethanol to give ethyl methacrylate.

By the end of 14th century,a member of paper mill existed in Europe, particularly in Spain, Italy, France and Germany.Paper production requires a disintegration ofthe bulky fibrous material to individual or small

agglomerate fibres. This is called pulping. Theideal fibre for high grade paper should be long, high in cellulose content and low in ligrincontent. Most ideal raw material for paperproducts is bamboo. Other sources arebagasse and hardwoods like jute stick must bedeveloped and good quality paper pulp makeby blending with bamboo fibre.

Aggarbatti is the Indian name for the Incensestick, which is a well known product coming everyclass of people due to its attractive perfumerysmell. The use of perfumery compounds startedvery early in the history. It would probably hadits beginning with the Atlantions who flourishedat a period conjectured to antedate the christianera by about 23,000 years. For the earliestrecords of perfumery compound. It is necessaryto turn to Egypt Egyptian kings were very fondof perfumes in various forms. Perfumes wereused for three quite distinct purposes by theEgyptians. (1) As offerings to their deities, (2) Foraesthetic purposes during their lives. (3) Asprincipal agents for embalming their dead,Cosmetics and perfumes were evidently used byjewish women. In India, China and many otherAsian countries, natural perfumery compoundswere used in the prehistoric period itself. It wascustomary for the priests to burn incense beforethe Gods in the temples and this incenseprobably consisted of aromatic gums, resins andoleo-resins mixed with perfumed woods.

Today, with theadvancement in technology, refrigerators areavailable in different makes and models. Arefrigerator maintains the temperature slightlyhigher than the freezing point of the water. Thereis also a device known as the Freezer whichmaintains the temperature below the freezingpoint of water. As far as the types of refrigeratorsare concerned, it can be widely classified intofour types. They are Top-Mount freezerrefrigerator, Side-by-side refrigerators, Freezeron bottom and French door refrigerators. Themost common type of refrigerator is the Top-Mount Refrigerator.

AGAR AGAR [EIRI-1451]According to the US Pharmacopeia, agar canbe defined as a hydrophilic colloid extracted fromcertain seaweeds of the Rhodophyceae class. Itis insoluble in cold water but soluble in boilingwater. A 1.5% solution is clear and when it iscooled to 34-430C it forms a firm gel which doesnot melt again below 850C. It is a mixture ofpolysaccharides whose basic monomer isgalactose. These polysaccharides can besulphated in very variable degrees but to a lesserdegree than in carrageenan. For this reason theash content is below those of carrageenan, furcelleran (Danish agar) and others. A 5%maximum ash content is acceptable for agaralthough it is normally maintained between 2.5-4%. Agar is the phycocolloid of most ancientorigin. In Japan, agar is considered to have beendiscovered by Minoya Tarozaemon in 1658 anda monument is Shimizu-mura commemoratesthe first time it was manufactured. Originally, andeven in the present times, it was made and soldas an extract in solution (hot) or in gel form (cold),to be used promptly in areas near the factories;the product was then known as tokoroten.

NAIL POLISH [EIRI-1453]Modern nail polish is sold in liquid form in smallbottles and is applied with a tiny brush. Within afew minutes after application, the substancehardens and forms a shiny coating on thefingernail that is both water- and chip-resistant.Generally, a coating of nail polish may last severaldays before it begins to chip and fall off. Nailpolish can also be removed manually by applyingnail polish “remover,” a substance designed tobreak down and dissolve the polish. Nailpolishes, nail enamels or nail lacquers arecoloured or colourless and/or pearly viscous

liquid, composed of nitrocellulose, syntheticresins, plasticizers and organic solvents. Inaddition they include suitable pigments ascolouring agents.

HDPE, PVC & CPVCPIPES AND

FITTINGS [EIRI-1438]Today, more PVC Pipes are being used than anyother pipe product. PVC is a thermosettingplastic. In other words, it can only be softenedand molded into form once. If it is softened andremolded a second time it will lose some of it’sfavorable characteristics. Recently, ‘FuseablePVC’ has come to market to compete with thefuseable properties of HDPE Pipe. PVC is verycorrosion resistant. It is not a conductor and willnot have an electrochemical reaction with acidsand bases that it comes in contact with. For thisreason, PVC is sometimes used to coat othermaterials for protection. PVC also has a highchemical resistance. While it will react with somechemicals, there are a large number of chemicalsit will not react with, making it an excellent productfor industrial applications. Best Industries to Start and GrowNO CARB PASTE

(ANTICARBURIZING PASTE -WATER SOLUBLE) FOR HEAT

TREATMENT [EIRI-1439]Carbon paste (anti-carburizing paste) (watersoluble) is a very versatile item meant forapplication for parts that require no hardness(i.e. to be kept soft) after case hardening. Thebasic object of the paste alludes to its applicationfor protection of external and internal threads, serratious, blind holes etc. The specialty of thecarbon paste is that it is water soluble anddoes not chemically invade the steel on which itis applied. Further, the carbon paste or anti-carburizing paste is steady in its working effectin the furnace at atmospheres of carbonmonoxide. Among other characteristics that thecarbon exhibits, a salient one is that it does notabsorb moisture from the air during storage. Theformulations of carbon paste comprisecarbonates, potassium ferrocyanide, salts ofcertain organic acids, sodium hydroxide, calciumchloride, rosin soap etc. all - being water solublechemicals, so water glass (sodium silicate) orglue is used as a binder. In view of the versatileuse of the carbon paste for the end-userindustries, the demand of the product isincreasing at a rapid pace and it has get verygood future prospects.

POLY ALUMINIUM CHLORIDE[EIRI-1018]

Aluminium chloride hydroxide [1327-41-9],[10284-64-7], Alcl (OH)2 [14215-15-7],AlCl2(OH), produts, commonly known aspolyaluminium chloides (PAC), are used for awide variety of industrial applications. Othernames for PAC are basic aluminium chloride, polybasic aluminium chloride, aluminiumhydroxychloride, aluminium oxychloride andaluminium chlorohydrate. The presence ofpolymeric, aluminium - containing cations, thedistribution of which can differ greatly, typifiesPAC products. Although the formation ofpolynuclear aluminium species in solution hasbeen studied for over a centary, there is still muchcontroversy concerning aluminiumpolymerization reactions and the resultingproduct compositions. Polyaluminium chloride isa partially hydrolyzed aluminium chloridesolution, which may incorporate a small amountof sulphate, has been introduced in Japan,England and Australia as an alternative to alum.

Cosmetics Processes & Formulations Hand Book Rs. 900/- or US$ 90/-

Introduction: Antiperspirants are used primarily toreduce (auxi llary) wetness. Deodorants (exceptsoaps) are employed to reduce axillary odour. Sincethis is considered a non-therapeutic purpose and afunction of the body is not considered to be altered, they are classed as cosmetics.Several metal saltshave astringent properties including those ofaluminium, zirconium, zinc, iron, chromium, lead, mercury and several rarer metals.Mechanism of

deodorants and deodorant ingredients.Since axillary odour is largelyproduced by the action of bacteria on nutrients present in apocrinesecretion, any compound which inhibits, the growth of those micro-organisms found in the axillae will, in theory, exhibit deodourantproperties.
