While based on the 599 GTB Fiorano with the same transaxle

layout and engine type, this prototype is an extreme track car. Fer-

rari’s engineers have carried out extensive work on the engine’s

combustion chambers and inlet and exhaust tracts. These modi-

fications, combined with the fact that internal attrition has been

reduced and the maximum revs have been boosted to 9,000 rpm,

helped achieve the target power output of 700 hp at 9,000 rpm.

Particular attention was also paid to cutting the weight of the en-

gine unit components. This was achieved both by optimising forms

- as in the new crankshaft - and adopting exclusive materials, as in

the carbon-fibre used for the intake plenums. A new gearbox shift

strategy cuts overall gearchange times to 60 ms.

The 599XX is characterised by an innovative electronic concept called the “High Perfor-

mance Dynamic Concept” which has been designed to get the maximum performance

from the car by managing the combination of the car’s mechanical limits with the po-

tential of its electronic controls. The mechanical and electronic systems work together to

get the maximum performance from the car under extreme high performance driving, for

consistent lap times. The sporty handling has been improved thanks to the adoption of

second generation SCM suspension system. Track usage is also made easier thanks to

the new “virtual car engineer”, a screen in the car that provides a real-time indication of

the vehicle’s efficiency.

The 599XX’s aerodynamics were honed in numerous wind tunnel test sessions with the

result that the car now boasts 280 kg of downforce at 200 km/h (630 kg at 300 km/h).

The front underside of the body is completely faired-in and the vents that channel hot air

from the engine bay have been moved to the bonnet.

The “ActiflowT” system increases downforce and/or cuts drag depending on the

car’s trim cornering conditions, courtesy of the use of a porous material in the dif-

fuser and two fans in the boot which channel the air flow from under the car out

through two grilles next to the tail-lights. Winglets have been added to the rear

buttresses to increase downforce. while synthetic jets have also been incorporated

into the rear of the car to control and smooth the air flow and to reduce drag.

Ferrari’s engineers have also used F1-derived “donuts” which partly cover the

brake discs and wheel rim. These have the dual function of improving both aero-

dynamics and brake cooling.

In terms of the bodywork, composites and carbon-

fibre have been widely used and the engineers drew

on their experience in working with aluminium to

reach the weight target. The development of increas-

ingly high-performance materials has also benefited

the carbon-ceramic material braking system. The

brake pads are now made from carbon-fibre which

means that the calipers are smaller whilst guaran-

teeing the same efficiency. The new racing carbon

ceramic braking system also delivers shorter brak-

ing distances and is generally more efficient due to

the weight saving.

The 599XX comes with slick tyres (29/67 R19 Front

and 31/71 R19 Rear) specifically developed to

maximise stability in cornering and increase lateral

acceleration. They are fitted to 19 x 11J wheel rims

at the front and 19 x 12J at the rear. •

Pininfarina Extra, operates in sectors different from transportation, maintaining a link with the Pininfarina

Group identity, which is strongly associated with the design of sport cars, technological products and able

to generate strong emotions. A world where the key words of design are: Elegance, Essentiality, Innovation.

So where does one go to enter this world of extraordinary design and function? Well we at Luxury Auto

Direct Magazine did not have to travel very far at all. A pristine example of the latest in design from Pininfa-

rina Extra is located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It is the brand new automotive showroom of Euromotorsport.

This magnificent example of design and functionality did not just happen overnight. Armed with over twenty

years of experience in the automotive business, owner Gene Morales wanted to create something new. To

build something that was missing for consumers in the automotive buying experience. It was about creating

an experience for the buyer and building a long term relationship built on knowledge, confidence and trust.

To establish a reputation of being around long after the initial transaction occurs and being a part of the ex-

otic car ownership experience from start to finish. As owners expand their collections, face new challenges

and require more support and advice, Euromotorsport is there for them.

At over 9000 sq ft , the Pininfarina Extra designed showroom is both inviting and expansive. It is also

the only automotive showroom in the United States ever designed by Pininfarina Extra. It even has a

Pininfarina Extra “Badge” to authenticate the project.

One of the first things you notice is just how welcoming the facility is. The typical car showroom image

of a “”Lets sell you something” is not to be found here and has been replaced with an environment that

projects confidence and elegance. Take for example the comforts that have been added to insure a five

star experience. With an attention to detail that only Pininfarina Extra can deliver, materials have been

imported all the way from Italy to find their new home in this stunning showroom.

The Pininfarina kitchen is just one perfect example. All components are Pininfarina including the striking

red chairs, sleek Euro style cabinets , fixtures and just about everything else. One can’t help but feel as

if you are surrounded by the exquisite interior of a fine automobile. New car smell and all.

Even the receptionist desk is a work of art, in fact it’s the only one of its kind in black. As for the work

space at Euromotorsport, all of the offices are filled with the finest in Pinanfarina designed furniture to

ensure a comfortable and relaxed environment for clients to relax in. Additionally, a multi screen wall

display is placed conveniently for guests to enjoy while they sit in modular furniture that is both sleek and

crisp in its design. One of the last design elements to arrive was the wall art. Images including the Ferrari

Enzo, the one of a kind P45 and renderings of the Birdcage 75 concept car were all being hung on the

walls of this dream facility just as we were going to press.

With all materials approved in advance by Pininfarina Extra, we asked owner Gene Morales what was the

most unique challenge in the design. “That would be the ceiling, it is a work of art on its own“ says Morales.

Created from thin gauge metal specially chosen to fit the exacting standards of Pininfarina Extra,

the ceiling posed a design challenge from the very beginning. Once the material was finally ap-

proved, it was then shaped and put into place. The end result was perfection as it flowed like

waves along the ceiling.

Fortunately, Morales did not have to go far to work with the design team. Pininfarina Extra has an

office locally and that fact saved both time and money. Managing Director Franco Lodato worked

direct with Morales and was given absolute control over every aspect of the project from start to

finish. Lodato is well known with projects that include the Maserati Birdcage 75 Concept car, the

RAZOR phone, Reebok Pump and a host of others.

In the end, the overall design of this showroom is not just the external embellishment of function. It is

an aesthetic and functional solution for the collective and individual needs of car enthusiasts who are

very passionate about their cars. As a whole it represents lasting values and performance, a trademark

Already the serial version of the Carrera GT presents itself with an abundance of ultra-light and high-strength

carbon material. And GEMBALLA continues this trend in the MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition by using it as the

main component of all body parts. Each single element of the GEMBALLA aerodynamics design is optimised

in the wind tunnel, produced in perfect surface quality and accurately fitted into the automobile.

The core part of the newly designed MIRAGE GT front is the striking apron with the enhanced air inlets for

an improved ventilation of the front coolers. In combination with the new front lip, GEMBALLA does not only

achieve an aggressive look, but also generates additional downthrust. Also the front wings and the bonnet

are replaced by proprietary development components. At the flanks, you find newly designed side skirts.

These calm down the air duct between the axles and send additional cooling air to the brake system through

integrated passages. The new diffuser which is fitted into the new rear skirt stabilises the rear section at high

speeds and in connection with the enlarged rear wing, it generates contact pressure at the rear axle. Further

advancements are provided by the individually adjustable Gurney flap which is inserted in the wing profile.

The body kit is perfected with the GEMBALLA roof channel as well as the air scoop of the engine compart-

ment and the rear view camera casing.

But the GEMBALLA MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition does not only impress with its fascinating design. As a result of an

optimised engine management and a special exhaust system with sport catalysts and pneumatic valve control, not

only the engine performance and the acceleration improve significantly. Due to its 670 hp / 493 kW at 8,000 rpm

and 630 Newton metres at 5,700 rpm, the ten-cylinder accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in breath-taking 3.7

seconds. The top speed is 335 km/h and therefore also faster than the basic model. For an enhanced gas pedal

response, the GEMBALLA technicians fit a sports clutch with special pads. Especially when driving stop and go in

city traffic, this is an enormous advantage and allows a smooth and bucking-free take-off.

The running gear components in the MIRAGE are especially adjusted to the enhanced engine performance and

sporty driving manner. They consist of four individually adjustable coilover dampers in a unit with progressively

coiled double springs. For everyday use, the electro-hydraulic height-adjustment is extremely innovative and enor-

mously helpful. By pushing a button in the passenger compartment, it is possible to lift the body by 45 millimetres

at the front- and rear axle and therefore allows driving over obstacles such as underground car park entrances and

traffic ramps. Also by pushing a button or by reaching 80 km/h, the MIRAGE lowers itself to its original level. As the

perfect wheel-tyre combination, GEMBALLA gits the multi-part rims GT SPORT Forged in the dimension 9.5 x 19 and

12.5 x 20 with tyres in the serial measurement 265/35 ZR19 at the front axle and 335/30 ZR20 at the rear axle. •

Fabspeed Motorsports manufactures high performance exhaust systems for exotic auto-

mobiles such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Maserati, Mercedes Benz and

BMW. Founded in 1992 by Joseph Fabiani out of Ambler, Pennyslvania, their mission is

to provide customers with quality performance products, competitive pricing and unpar-

alleled service. Fabspeed is compromised of automotive artists; people that eat, sleep,

and dream engineering, g-force, horsepower and style.


Fabspeed, being no stranger to tuning high performance exotics, was pleased to get the call from Jason

Kable from “The Fleet Wholesale” in Baltimore, MD, on partnering together on this build. The owner pur-

chased the car from Mr. Kable “sight unseen” with intentions of completely transforming this car into what it

is today without even seeing the car until it was delivered to him. The Bentley has a 6.0 Liter, double-vee 12

cylinder engine with twin turbos crammed under the bonnet. It produces 551 bhp at 6100 rpm and 480 ft/

lb of torque at 1600 rpm at the crank.

While the car was at The Fleet in Baltimore, it was completely stripped of its original paint and received a

new paintjob with the addition of the flat black hood, roof, trunklid and also blacked out trim accents and

lights to give it that “murdered out” look. A set of Savini SV 08 22 inch wheels with a carbon fiber lip were

custom built specifically for this Continental. An aftermarket RENNTECH digital lowering module was in-

stalled which allows owners to set the car 50 mm below the stock setting, with 8 levels of adjustability. The

Bentley resembles liquid midnight when you see it roll by, like its own black hole absorbing light and sound

as it travels past you.

From Baltimore, the car was shipped to Fabspeed Headquarters in Ambler, to undergo the performance

upgrades. Priority order of business was for Jeremy D’Avella, General Manager/Performance Specialist to

map out Fabspeeds plan of attack for the Bentley CGT. First the car was strapped down to Fabspeeds AWD

DynoJet 434XLC2 to test baseline horsepower and torque. Fabspeed has the ability to monitor and log many

different parameters of the cars computer system with Dynojet’s sophisticated data-logging software.

We asked D’Avella to describe Fabspeed’s

tuning Methodology. “Vehicle manufac-

turers typically tune conservatively. Fab-

speed/PES precisely adjusts the ECU maps

that affect parameters such as fuel, timing,

boost pressure and throttle response. Part-

throttle fueling and timing are optimized

to deliver better highway fuel economy, as

well as smoothness. The result is a car with

better drivability and more performance.

Important engine data such as air-fuel ra-

tios, cylinder knock activity, EGT’S are care-

fully monitored during testing. We always

encourage the customer to consider our

complete performance package for bal-

anced, reliable performance.”


In stock form this Bentley put down 412hp and 445 ft/lb torque measured to all four wheels. Now it was time

to install the Fabspeed 80mm downtube/secondary catbypass package which replaces the OEM secondary

catalytic converters and resonators. Along with the removal of the catalytic converters, Fabspeed utilizes an

H-Pipe to improve mid-range torque and exhaust balancing. These performance products will bolt directly up

to the stock muffler system which in fact is a straight through design when the Pierburg valves are open. With

the performance products and custom ECU upgrade installed, overall power was tested at 512WHP/738

ft-lbs of wheel torque, or 691BHP/996 ft-lbs of torque to the crank. That’s pretty impressive for just bolt on

exhaust products and a custom ECU upgrade, but then again that’s just tuning and that’s just what Fabspeed

does. This Bentley Continental GT was prepared for Robb Rill at Darkcyd Racing and specifically tuned for

the Gumball 3000. •

November 15th in Bay Front Park overlooking the water. The event is a

yachts in the heart of downtown Miami at the EPIC HOTEL marina. At-

While there are multiple sources of assistance for fallen officers,

there is a lack of support for those who have endured nearly fatal,

debilitating injuries that have kept them and sometimes their care

takers off the job for an extended period of time.

The IOAF seeks to grow the fund by building support from businesses and individuals who recognize

the sacrifices made by the men and women of Greater Miami’s police departments to ensure the

safety of the community. The IOAF is a registered 501(3)(c) charity. •

The history of F&M’s atelier dates back to

the early 1960s, when a young and passion-

ate race car enthusiast, Antonio Faralli (but

everyone calls him Mario), decides to open

up a small company in his homeland, the

beautiful Tuscany.

As the years passed by, out of the passion for racing and the experience gained in the construction of many

different racing cars, the desire to offer a new service crops up: classic car restoration, utilising both acquired

knowledge and his own experience. It’s an incredibly successful activity, in some ways ahead of its time,

solely devoted to bring back to life some really extraordinary classics, some of which are one-offs of immense

value. The results are fantastic, the company quickly becomes the reference point among the many Italian and

foreign classic car owners/enthusiasts who keep coming back.

As the years go by, Mario is joined in his work by his two sons Walter and Andrea. In the meantime, Rossello Maz-

zanti and his son Luca start collaborating with him as expert bodywork painters. The two families become good

friends, they share the same passion for cars and, most of all, the same vision on life. In particular, the young Walter

and Luca become really good friends, as well as work colleagues. They are soon joined by Mino Camilotti, an auto-

motive mechanical engineer with years of experience specializing in developing supercars such as the Pagani Zonda,

the Lamborghini Murcielago/Gallardo and racing pedigree in the FIA GT championships. His contribution adds the

necessary project engineering and validation for each new model, as well as an international outlook to the company.

Their vision is to bring back the Car to its rightful place, in a

world invaded by too many regulations, conformity and lack

of fantasy. From impersonal means of transportation, useful

but lifeless, to Car with its own personality and alive. The

brief is clear: the car will have to revert to the past tradition

of Italian coachbuilders of between 1930s to 1960s, both in

terms of building and construction methodology, and also in

terms of freedom allowed to the final client to define his/her

car. Based on state-of-the-art technology for the engineering

validation, each car will be handcrafted in its entirety. Like a

made to measure haute couture suit, each car will reflect in

every detail the F&M style and the taste of its proud owner.

At the recent Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo unveiled numerous major developments heralding the re-

launch of the brand on the global stage. Protagonist of the event was the new Alfa Romeo 159 (saloon and

Sportwagon versions). The new 159 is designed to express a sporting yet seductive personality and boasts

road holding and performance that set new standards for this class of car. Two new engines in particular

(a 200 HP, 1750 cc turbocharged petrol engine and a 170 HP 2.0 JTDM diesel) place the Alfa Romeo 159

firmly in market segment D, in the power range that accounts for over half of Alfa Romeo sales.

Under their fascinating and highly personal exterior, all Alfa Romeos offer a choice of superb engines, all

packed with the latest technology and bursting with performance. Alfa Romeo engines are the perfect em-

bodiment of the sporting soul that has always set the marque apart from the competition. The Alfa Romeo 159

is certainly no exception. Starting from April 2009, the new 159 will be available with a brand new engine:

a 1750 cc turbocharged petrol engine that conforms to Euro 5 standards and develops 200 HP between

The new 1750 cc turbo petrol engine (manufactured by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies) comes combined

with a six speed manual gearbox and boasts advanced ignition control solutions including direct fuel injec-

tion, two continuously variable valve timing units, a turbocharger and a revolutionary scavenging control

system. The resulting performance is comparable to – or better than – that of many 3 litre engines while still

delivering fuel consumption typical of a compact four cylinder unit.
