LExuS LF-A ROADSTER CONCEPT

he engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for express-ing their ideas about what a high-performance

sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF-A, they have removed the car’s top to create a high-performance roadster. The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet light-weight carbon-fiber and aluminum body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure’s strength and rigidity even without a top. Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is pow-ered by a high-revving V10 engine that approaches 5.0 li-ters in displacement. The V10, capable of more than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is

mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what the LF-A’s engineers refer to as a “front-mid” configuration. The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a transaxle that is controlled by paddle shifters. The torque tube is a structural member that adds rigidity to the drivetrain and chassis while also reducing vibration. Styling is rooted in the Lexus L-Finesse design philoso-phy, conferring the LF-A Roadster’s front end with a com-pact, low-profile, aerodynamic shape. Like its coupe coun-terpart, the LF-A Roadster stands just 48 inches tall, but the Roadster configuration adds a speed adaptive rear wing. The rear is marked by a pair of wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped taillights that bracket a pair of large grilles. These grilles vent the heated air from the car’s two rear-mounted

radiators into the LF-A Roadster’s aerodynamic wake. The radiators are fed cool air by two large intake ducts mounted just above the rear wheel wells. This aft radiator positioning not only allowed the designers to keep the car’s front profile low and tight but also aided the LF-A’s chassis engineers in their search for optimal weight distribution. Helping to provide balance and scale to the design, which features an overall length of 175.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.6 inches, are high-performance tires on turbine-styled alloy wheels. The front tires are 265/35R20s, while the rears are 305/30R20s. Like the LF-A coupe, the brakes consist of 14.2-inch cross-drilled, vented discs up front, and 13.6-inch cross-drilled, vented discs at the rear. The front brake calipers are six-piston units and the rear calipers use four pistons each. An “F” logo, located on each front fender of the Road-ster, indicates the vehicle’s status as a part of the new “F” marque. The name is derived from the original “F” designa-tion for the first Lexus LS prototype. That vehicle was inter-nally coded “Circle-F,” with the “F” standing for “flagship.” The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus’ first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the “F” code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development pro-cess. In addition, Fuji Speedway is the IS F’s home circuit, and the shape of the F-logo was inspired by many of the track’s turns. The all-new Lexus IS F sport sedan is the first production vehicle to carry the F marque.

LuxuRy WATCH SPOTLIGHT

reated as a professional-grade div-ers watch without compromise in both aesthetic and quality, the Kon-Tiki Diver is now available in 2008

for sale in North America through all fine Eterna retailers. No ordinary diver’s watch, the KonTi-ki Diver is a rugged yet beautiful timepiece in-tended for use a tool for seasoned profession-als. Its design and construction are flawlessly oriented toward functionality. Numerous inno-vations abound in the case construction, such as the hinged lid mechanism and the brilliantly unique sealing system, which all emphatically underscore the Swiss manufacturer’s daring mission to belong amongst only the finest pio-neers in the art of watchmaking. Renowned for their stately-designed timepieces since 1856 and currently owned by automotive legend Ferdinand A. Porsche,

Eterna was interested in creating a timepiece able to perform impeccably under the most rigorous conditions. The Eterna KonTiki Diver acknowledges how strongly divers rely on their equipment and how even slight imperfections in reading or performance can place a life in jeopardy. Dominating looks transcend the Kon-Tiki Diver’s true function as a diver’s watch, tell-ing divers how long they have been underwater and how long their air tank reserves will last. With the KonTiki Diver, Eterna has developed a professional tool for the wrist that fulfills the highest demands for function and design. In creating the timepiece, Eterna reexam-ined the functionality of a diver’s watch from the ground up. The concept for the case was at the center of its development. Designers took a sensible approach to design by completely separating watch movement protection and

wrist attachment from each other. The KonTiki Diver mechanical movement is watertight in a sealed container securely anchored to the watch bridge. The durable minimalist rubber strap, with a double-folding clasp and wet-suit extension, fastens the system tightly around the wrist in a way that looks great in and out of the water. Another technical highlight, and a real safety plus in diving, is the unique hinged lid mechanism that links the container and the bridge. The design allows divers to fold the container out of the bridge before beginning the dive after unlocking it by pressing two spring-loaded buttons. Divers are then able to set perfect diving time on the dual-direction ro-tating bezel, which can be easily read from the inside flange without risk of parallax error. By locking the container into the bridge,

the bezel is secured against possible unintentional rotation. Up to now, the KonTiki Diver is the only iteration of this unique solution for this safe-ty-critical mechanism until now. Standard diver’s watches do not have a locking diving bezel and therefore are made to turn only in a counter-clockwise direction. This means that any unintentional rotation of the bezel shows longer diving time than actually transpired forcing the diver to break off a dive earlier than necessary.

Sealing SyStem from the automobile induStry

Eterna has intelligently combined the advantages of a convention-al rotating bezel with an interior diving ring, meaning divers can easily adjust readings even when wearing wetsuit gloves and make time ad-justments on the minute circle stay reliably protected under the four-millimeter thick domed sapphire-glass crystal. This was made possible through an innovative technology transfer largely found in automobiles and available only through Porsche. On the KonTiki Diver, the rotating components (the bezel and the winding stem), are sealed with shaft seals. Such seals are usually used to seal the crankshaft in an automobile engine or the shafts in the trans-mission. In cooperation with highly efficient suppliers, Eterna miniatur-ized this auto system for the watch industry. This made it possible to build the KonTiki Diver without a screw-down crown that is watertight down to 1000 meters. The KonTiki Diver crown is ten millimeters in diameter and deeply fluted to make it possible for a diver to wind the watch movement un-derwater with his gloves on if necessary. To make this occasion rarely necessary, the watch also has an automatic winder and a power reserve indicator at 4 o’clock on the dial. In order to guarantee the greatest pos-sible precision and reliability, Eterna has installed a chronometer-tested

automatic movement in the KonTiki Diver. A diver’s watch must absolutely be easy to read under any light conditions. The black dial of the KonTiki Diver with its large white num-bers and wide hour and minute hands makes sure this is possible even under the worst conditions. The hands, numbers, and the raised index marks are treated with glowing superluminova to improve readability in the dark. The same treatment was used in the minute marks on the div-ing bezel.

a modern Watch With a great heritage Eterna paid close attention to robustness and functionality in the selection of materials and the processing for the KonTiki Diver. The bridge and rotating bezel are stainless steel as are the screwed strap horns. The engineers decided to use black, PVD-coated titanium for the construction of the container to save weight while not compromising stability. The caseback bears the KonTiki medallion commemorating the historic origins of this watch line. In 1947, the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific from Peru to Polynesia on a raft of pre-historic design named after the sun god of the original inhabitants of Peru: KonTiki. During this 8000 kilometer adventurous ocean journey, Heyerdahl wore an Eterna–a watchmaking masterpiece built by pioneers for pioneers. Since 1856, Eterna has stood for the manufacture of high-quality, mechanical watches. In its long history, Eterna has introduced many important industry developments as one of the pioneers of the art of watchmaking. Among the revolutionary innovations to come out of Eter-na are the ball-bearing mounted rotor for hand-wound movements and the chronograph with mechanical digital stopwatch indicator. This tradi-tional brand today belongs to Ferdinand A. Porsche and is thus one of the last major manufacturers anywhere in the world that is still not part of a major group. Eterna is also the manufacturer of the highly success-ful Porsche Design watch collection under license from Porsche Design.

LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO LP560-4: SETTING A NEW STANDARD

ith the new Gallardo LP560-4, Lamborghini once again sets a higher standard for super sports cars. With its new engine, permanent four-wheel drive transmission and new sus-

pension, it delivers improvements in both performance and dy-namics. In parallel, its innovative design takes Lamborghini’s unique classic lines one-step further. Powerful elegance has never been so defined before. The Gallardo LP560-4 is the successor of the most suc-cessful Lamborghini model of all time. Approximately 7100 Gal-lardo models have left the Sant’Agata Bolognese production plant since its launch in 2003. “The LP560-4 will consolidate this success story,” states Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “It will outclass its predeces-sor in every aspect; its dynamics are distinctly breathtaking and its design sets new standards. With the introduction of the Gallardo LP560-4, we will consistently continue Lamborghini’s growth strategy”. The engine of the Gallardo LP560-4 is a completely new development. All that remains of the original V10 is the number of cylinders that, in this performance category, create a per-

fect and unique synthesis of torque, force of movement, sporty nimbleness, compact size and low weight—In fact; they even changed the engine placement. The powerful heart of the new and evolved Gallardo LP560-4 is the new 5.2-liter V10 engine with an output of 560hp at 8000 rpm resulting in an increase of 40hp and a near 20-kilogram weight reduction over the previous model. The en-gine in the new model lies lengthways in front of the rear axle – hence the model description “Longitudinale Posteriore.” A mid-rear engine layout is an unbeatable concept in sports car production because the center of gravity being displaced next to the vertical axis creates exceptional driving dynamics. In addition to its innovative layout, the LP560-4 can ac-celerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, its speed at 11.8 seconds is 200 km/h and its top speed lies at 325 km/h. De-spite its clearly increased power, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by a staggering 18 per cent. The engineers in the Sant’Agata-based Technical Depart-ment have also improved traction, handling and stability at high speeds. The redesigned four-wheel drive transmission, the new suspension and the optimized aerodynamics as well

as the reduced weight and decreased friction between the compo-nents, all contribute to the overall improvements in the vehicle. Thus the Gallardo LP560-4 presents itself as a cutting edge super sports car also suitable for the racetrack. The car is also surprisingly suited to long-distance driving and, despite its extreme performance capabili-ties, is easy to control. The DNA of the Lamborghini brand undergoes constant evolution with each new edition developed by the Centro Stile, and the new Gal-lardo is no different. The 1410 kilograms aluminum-bodied Gallardo LP560-4 displays the brand’s telltale hard edges and clean surfaces, yet is decidedly fresh. Ornaments or embellishments of any form are alien to the ve-hicle. The newly designed front of the LP 560-4 squats deeply to the ground, which contributes to its aerodynamic efficiency. The enlarged, accentuated cooling intakes meet the demands of augmented engine power and increase the air circulation vital to a vehicle as powerful as this. The spoiler, positioned low between the air intakes, improvesaerodynamic equilibrium at high speeds. The body is not only extreme-ly light but also torsionally stiff and displays the highest safety charac-teristics. Thus the basis for the extraordinary handling characteristics of the LP560-4 is formed.

The completely redesigned rear gives the phrase “powerful el-egance” a new meaning: rear lights, air cooling vents, bumper and diffuser are arranged in precise positions on the car’s exterior, which make the LP560-4 appear extremely wide and bonded to the road surface. In addition, the rear diffuser has been newly designed and, coupled with the smooth underbody, contributes to the excellent steer-ing stability even at extremely high speeds. In fact, the aerodynamic efficiency has been increased by 31%.

...the Gallardo LP560-4 pres-ents itself as a cutting edge super

sports car also suitable for the racetrack.

The designers in Sant’Agata Bolognese have excelled them-selves with the clear-cut, pure, stark lines of the Gallardo LP 560-4. They also have demonstrated distinct attention to detail; the elabo-rate aluminum cap for petrol and motor oil are testimony to this, as is the rear camera, which has been integrated in a small fin in the independent rear spoiler as well as the finely crafted grille in the exhaust pipes. Despite its low exterior height, the Gallardo LP560-4 wel-comes its passengers with a spacious interior. The sports seats are covered with either fine leather or Alcantara(R) and provide comfort and support. Typical of sports cars, the seats are set low, but there is space behind the seats for luggage to compliment the already ample 110-liter trunk. The wide middle console characterizes the vehicle’s sporty dynamism. It accommodates the standard Lamborghini multime-

dia system as well as the air conditioning, which can be regulated by both the driver and passenger. Seven round instruments in the cockpit, complete with new graphic, provide the driver with essen-tial engine data and a multifunctional display between the speed-ometer and revolution counter. Furthermore, the individualization program, Ad Personam, en-ables the customer to create any combination of color and trim to create a highly personalized vehicle. Behind this program stands the philosophy that a super sports car of this nature should, after all, reflect the personality of its owner by enabling him to complete-ly indulge his expectations and wishes. As a consequence, extreme exclusivity is the trademark of Lamborghini’s individualization pro-gram. “Think the Impossible” states the motto, and that is exactly what Lamborghini continues to do.

ROM • MANUFACTURED IN CALIFORNIA SINCE 1990

The typical ROM purchaser goes through several stages:1. Total disbelief that the ROM can do all this in only 4 minutes.2. Rhetorical (and sometimes hostile) questioning and ridicule.3. Reading the ROM literature and reluctantly understanding it.4. Taking a leap of faith and renting a ROM for 30 days. 5. Being highly impressed by the results and purchasing a ROM.6. Becoming a ROM enthusiast and trying to persuade friends.7. Being ignored and ridiculed by the friends who think you’ve lost your mind.8. After a year of using the ROM your friends admiring your good shape.9. You telling them (again) that you only exercise those 4 minutes per day.

10. Those friends reluctantly renting the ROM for a 30 day trial. Then the above cycle repeats from point 5 on down.

The more we tell people about the ROM the less they believe it.From 4 minutes on the ROM you get the same results as from 20 to 45minutes aerobic exercise (jogging, running, etc.) for cardio and respiratory benefits, plus 45 minutes weight training for muscle tone andstrength, plus 20 minutes stretching exercise for limberness/flexibility.

icked Motor Works is the Premier Custom Auto Design House. One of the very few companies that does everything from A to Z when it comes to custom Design Porsches

and Exotic Cars. They have an Auto Design Department that designs and builds some of the most spectacular Custom Widebody Porsches and Exotic Cars. As well as aggressively enhanced Custom Auto Body Components. You can choose from the Amazing designs that Wicked has created or you can commission your very own custom design. Wicked will design it, prototype it, and build it. They make your imagina-tion a reality. Once designed, the prototype department will build a mock up of their new design or your new design. In the prototype stage, your thoughts and designs go from the mind, to paper to the actual part on the car. This is the stage where we integrate function and aerodynamics with the design. Once this stage is completed, we send the pro-totype to be produced to an actual end use part.of the car. It is an amazing process to see your ideas go from a thought to reality. Wicked Motor Works is very well known for their unique Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body Porsches. The very fa-mous Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body Porsches have been fea-tured on countless Magazine Covers, Auto Shows, and Pro-motional Events. Wicked builds a hand full of very special

Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body Porsches each year, as It is an 8 week process to build a complete Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body Porsche from start to finish. Each Wicked-7 has a full Steel Wide Body, with the rear Quarter Panels extended 7 inches wider then a stock Turbo Porsche and the front fend-ers extended 4 inches wider then a stock Porsche, all in steel. The Front Bumper, Rear Bumper, Rockers, and Deck-lid/Wing are all custom designed and built in a Mega Wide Body size to accommodate the Wider Body. And with each Porsche generational change, Wicked changes the body designs to follow and accentuate the most recent genera-tion. In otherwords, Wicked began the Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body program in 2001 with the 996 Porsche generation and Turbo body Style. Wicked build this look (996 Turbo Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body) from 2001-2004. Then in 2005 Wicked changed the Wicked-7 body style to the 997 Turbo Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body style body by fabricating and bruiting the first 997 Porsche Generation Turbo Style Body on a 996 Car-rera and 996 Turbo platform 2 years before Porsche began to offer the 997 Turbo for sale. Thus from 2005-2008 Wick-ed has been building the 997 Turbo Wicked-7 Mega Wide Body Style. Thus, although Wicked respects and stays true to Porsche’s Generational designs, they build each car in the Mega Wide Body Style and all of the body components are changed to Wicked’s designs.

For example, Wicked’s most recent Wicked-708 front Bumper is the most aggressive and intricate design to date. It features gap-ping open design to offer optimum air intake for the cooling system located behind the front bumper on the left and right side, as well as the center intake for the center radiator. All three gapping open-ings are adorned with Carbon Fiber inserts for give it an out of this world racing design look. The lower valance lip is also in a match-ing Carbon Fiber to tie the two tone paint color and carbon fiber combination look together. The design also features side shark fin outlets to allow air resistance to release air pressure and increase aerodynamics. The bumper also features a top vent air outlet to release the residual air from the center air intake. The factory blink-ers that normally stick out like a sore thumbs have been recessed back into the air intakes so that they do not stand out unless they are being utilized, this gives the bumper a very aggressive demonic look. The latest design for the rear Wicked-7 bumper (to be unveiled this Summer) changes the single left and right exhaust pipes to a double left and right exhaust pipes for a total of a four barrel Ex-haust pipe system, however Wicked moves the exhaust pipes high-er up about 7 inches, where they come out from the left and right side but from the center of the bumper as opposed to the bottom of the bumper. The entire bottom of the bumper is a full Carbon Fiber Diffuser System to allow for maximum aerodynamics. The center of the bumper is a Hex metal Mesh for optimum heat ventilation for high Horse Power Engines. The Four Barrel Exhaust Pipes Fea-ture an aggressive Carrera GT style surround Bezels that attach the pipes to the mesh. And finally the side Intercooler air outlets have a Shark Gill Design to move the exiting air to the rear of the car for increased aerodynamics as opposed to the stock horizontal outlets which push the exiting air downward. The design of the rear

bumper also compliments the design and material (Carbon Fiber) composition of the front bumper for a unified look and design. The current Rocker panels are made in house from metal as well and shaped and welded right onto each Wicked-7 design. Wick-ed utilized a GT2 Style rear Wing to date, in a Static GT2 Style and in a movable GT2 Style Blade. These two look are being replaced with two new looks. The first in a 997 GT2 Style and the second in a much sharper edged top and bottom blade ends as well as a dif-ferent shaped design. The Blade will rise with increase in speed for rear end stability and the rear of the blade will rise higher then the front when the brakes are applied to use wind resistance to slow the vehicle from high speeds. (Will be available this Summer) The New Wicked-7 Hood will have a 993 Style Hood, both in aluminum and in Carbon Fiber. Wicked Motor Works has no limits for your Custom Auto De-sign Needs. “Adventures are to the adventurous”, a great statesman once said. So it was in 2007 for a gathering of highly successful business and community leaders from around the nation as they stepped into their unique motor vehicles, strapped up their seatbelts, and began one of the most significant enterprises of their lives: The Fireball Run. For them, adventurers all, The Fireball Run would combine an inspiring time away from their busy , productive lives with the opportunity to give something back to the less fortunate children of the America they love. On a clear September morning, amidst a throng of cheering on-lookers, marching bands, and influential VIPs, the mayor of Orlando, Florida was ready to drop the green flag commencing a new chapter in the great lexicon of motor vehicle racing. Sexy convertibles, classic

sedans, antique autos, a myriad of trucks, and even a million dollar mo-tor coach had arrived. It looked like a political convention. People from different backgrounds, people of various ages, with sundry reasons for being there, had come together for a week of business networking, fun, and excitement. A diverse bevy of individuals, male and female, soon would travel across our great land, from Florida to Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Nevada, finally arriving in Los An-geles, the movie capital of the world. And at every stop along the way they would immerse themselves in the most important aspect of their journey, the search for America’s missing children. On race tracks in Houston and Las Vegas an Aston Martin duked it out with a Mazarati, a Bentley challenged a Corvette. Even the trucks got a piece of the action, as pickups pounded the pavement. The en-

gines roared and the “rally crews” worked almost to exhaustion. The spectacle was something to behold. Watching an enormous motor home traverse the curves of the Las Vegas Speedway or enjoying the pirate and his gal who became a cowboy and cowgirl the next day and a sailor with his ensign a day later are pleasures only 2007 Fireballers can recall. A “live” guy popped out of a coffin in one town. Then there was the “dictator” with the bull horn and Martin, the “negotiator”. These and other “secrets” are now part and parcel of Fireball lore. Whether it was “Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona” or find-ing the old mansion of the famous Louisiana Governor Huey Long , the Fireballers of 2007 have a storehouse of snapshots which will last forever in their minds as well as in their cameras. But how did all this begin? Fireball founder, J.Sanchez, an entre-preneur with a list of business credentials which include forays into the fast-paced worlds of advertising, movie making, and marketing took an interest in cross-country road rallying. As with all “doers”, he be-gan immediately to get involved with his latest “love”. He learned and practiced the art of racing on the track , participated in another cross country race, and then decided to start one of this own. But he real-ized that there were very few legal transcontinental rallies in America. That’s when his business savvy kicked in. A young man with the “gift of gab” and a positive, “can do” attitude, J. was able to attract similar rare people to his cause: the creation of the best road rally in America. For more than a year he traveled the country, making new friends and forging new alliances. Soon he adopted the name Fireball from Fireball Roberts, a famous NASCAR driver, crafted a brand name, and a star was born. The Fireball Run quickly became the talk of business people

across the country who wanted to find some “action” while still enjoy-ing a well-deserved vacation. And they were the type of concerned citizens whom J. had met during his own involvement in the Orlando Chamber of Commerce. That’s when J. found a new wrinkle which would help set his rally apart from all the others. He began working with leaders of organizations for missing children, he created the real “magic” of The Fireball Run. As the racers themselves fulfilled their individual dreams, they also found common cause. They would help fulfill the dreams of American children who had become the victims of neglect and abuse. The stage for success was set. And what a success it was! Entrants came from everywhere. From Ohio came an auto customizer with quite a sense of humor. A movie mogul with untold wealth arrived from California. The man who built a replica of the famous Batmobile was there with his duplicate of the big black machine with red highlights. He and his sidekick, Robin (his son), ran the race not only to the delight of the other drivers, but also to the amazement of people in every state. Business executives and CEO’s from the Carolinas to New Mexico joined the fun with four Orlando firefighters in a truck , lights flashing and sirens blaring. A 1967 Lincoln Continental convertible never put up its top, even when

36 luxuryautodirect.com

it rained. And a retired Ernest Hemingway (at least someone who looked like him) showed up with his wife. A few young fellows ran in their super-charged Dodge 2500 pickup. Two “priests” in a Corvette hooked up with entrepreneurs who in the “real world” were dealers in everything from rare art to radar detectors. A movie stunt crew helped with the H.D. filming, while professional race car drivers often assisted the “novices”. Mustangs and Vets, Bentleys and BMWs, a Hummer, the new Saturn Sky, and a Dodge Viper were among the gorgeous autos which graced this transcontinental excursion. And when they were off the race tracks, the drivers were like peregrines, wondering the highways and byways, searching for elusive markers which would help them accumulate points in order to win the “game”. Of course, besides needing gasoline for their cars, the participants had to run on their own “fuel”. For them there was a cornucopia of delights. Among the many wonders of Fireball, the food was a major attraction. Palates were always satisfied and no one ever went hungry in The Fireball Run. 2008. J. Sanchez is preparing for this year’s Fireball Run, Amer-ica’s other “Fall Classic”. New drivers are signing up every day. This year’s “Adventurally” will begin in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a city where hospitality knows no bounds. Already The Fireball Run 2008 website is presenting a message from a representative of the governor’s office, which incidentally is where the opening ceremonies will take place. Friendliness will abound in Cajun country before the interactive rally adventure takes its drivers up through mid-America, ending in Grand Rapids, Michigan. And the origi-nal Fireballers are just itching to put the pedal to the metal again. The dealer in classic automobiles has it on his list as a “must do”. The art critic eagerly awaits another chance to inspect the workmanship

and classic lines he recognizes in “coach building”. The young couple whose business took off after networking at Fireball 2007 want to “meet and greet” new clients in 2008. And the kids with the pickups are looking forward to a plain “great time”. Of course, it’s the competi-tion for the purists in the group. Some were beaten on the track last year. “Not again”, they say. And the work goes on. Products are being prepared and ordered. Flags, tee shirts, leather jackets, and Fireball patches are on the way. Invitational entry forms have been printed and are being processed. In every state along the route, meetings are taking place with public officials. Welcoming committees are being formed. First-class hotels are being inspected. The Fireball website is constantly updated. It’s the sequel! Fireball Run 2: Back to the Track! And this year’s Fireball is taking on a new theme: traveling back in time. Missions, clues, music - the entire live action game promises to spin you participants around, baby, right around to the 1980’s. So put on your daisy dukes, grab your caddy shack, and get ready to rumble on a new, intensified vacation that organizer J. Sanchez says, “will have you and your team on the go-go.” “Be advised,” he says, “ this time, it’s Personal. We aren’t playing pin-pong anymore!” So toss out your intelevision because it will take some “wierd science” for the “goonies” of Fireball 2008 to success-fully roll into each level of the new game. But never forget, all this will be just window dressing if not for the true “magic “of The Fireball Run”. Indeed, The Fireball Run is mainly for the kids. This is the only rally in America which has as its foremost goal the discovery of America’s missing children. So it’s The Fireball Run Redux. On September 25th, 2008 The Fireball Run continues live from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The “adventure to the adventurous”- the “Adventurally” for America.

BEST WITH THE SOPHISTICATION OF THE HERMES BRAND.

t the 78th Geneva Motor Show this past March, Bugatti and Hermès co-presented the fruit of their partnership: the “Bu-

gatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès,” associating the marques technical prowess with the expertise craftsmanship of the designer. In partnership with Hermès, designer Gabriele Pezzini has married Hermès distinctive style to the legendary Bugatti Veyron 16.4 magni-fying the car’s personality. This remarkable car features excep-tional characteristics already lauded by the public including an innovative, technological-ly advanced engine that creates a staggering 1001hp and an understated yet uncompro-mising silhouette that reflects the high per-formance capacities of its state-of-the-art engineering and design. The fascination exerted by this sports coupé, capable of reaching 407 km/h, is due in large part to its unique alliance of the very finest motor-racing technology with comfort-able handling for everyday driving. The 16-cylinder “W” configuration engine is fed by fourturbochargers and features 64 valves, gen-erating 1001 horsepower at 6000 rpm. The engine draws on its 8-liter displacement to deliver a maximum torque of 1250 Newton-meters between 2200 and 5500 rpm. Withfull-time all-wheel drive, the car’s phenome-nal power produces breath-takingly dynamic handling, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 2.5 seconds. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 benefits from

aeronautical and aerospace technologies, making it the fastest production car ever made. The car also features a braking system designed to deliver unprecedented powers of deceleration, estab-lishing a new industry benchmark. The carbon-fiber discs provide brake pressure of up to 180 bars, combinedwith eight-piston monobloc callipers and titanium pistons fit-ted with fine steel heads and ceramic heat protectors. Apply the brakes at speeds above 200 km/h, and the rear wing acts as an airbrake, positioning itself at an angle of 113 degrees in less than 0.4 seconds, augmenting the Bugatti Veyron’s al-ready impressive stopping power. The airbrake increases negative lift at the rear of the car to 300 kg, enhancing the braking torque on the rear axle. At 400 km/h, emergency braking will bring the sports car to a complete halt in less than 10 seconds. This, the world’s most fascinat-ing car, has pushed back the limits of physical engineering to offer a com-pletely new sensation for driver and passenger alike. But it has also ad-opted a radically different stance to that of other sports cars: its features

and finish are sure to impress the most demanding clientele, yet the newest incarnationleaves its sibling predecessors as far behind as its contemporaries on the track. Hermès and designer Gabriele Pezzini have lavished attention on the interior and exterior of this exceptional car, to cre-ate the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4: the “Bugatti Veyron Fbg parHermès.” The official name of the highly exclusive Bugatti Veyron

“Fbg par Hermès” refers to the historic Hermès headquarters on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in the heart of Paris’s eighth arrondisse-ment: the “Fbg” appellation evokes the house’s “faubourg” address. With the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès, the exacting standards of both Émile Hermès and Ettore Bugatti come together for the first time in this exceptional collaboration. It’s the sublime platform to exhibit the culmination of their extreme attention to aesthetic and technological quality and performance. Gabriele Pezzini has reinterpreted Bugatti’s traditional two-tone carriage work, fostering a fluid, harmonious transition between the car’s exterior and interior design. The color of the hood extends to the interior of the cockpit, and re-emerges behind, at the level of the rear

wing. As a tribute to the celebrated 1924 Bugatti Type 35—undoubtedly the most famous of all time—the new Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès features eight-spoked wheels in polished aluminum, central butterfly wheel locks branded with the letter “H,” and air vents around the rims reproducing the characteristic appearance of Hermès saddle-stitching. The horseshoe radiator grille and the lateral ventilation grilles flanking it are made from lightweight alloys with a design of interlocking “H’s” evoking the Hermès “signature.” The inner surfaces of the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès have been designed and scrupulously sheathed in bull calfskin by the Her-mès workshops in Paris. The care and attention to detail observe an extremely refined, minimalist formal vocabulary, reflecting the tradition of the very first vehicles Ettore Bugatti designed while keeping true to

the fundamental design principles of the house of Hermès. The door handles echo the fluid forms of handles on Hermès travel bags and luggage. And the dashboard, tradi-tionally finished in brushed aluminum, is here clad entirely in bull calfskin. Passengers aboard the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès will find a dashboard glove compartment designed to hold a selection of small travel accessories and a zipped Hermès wallet. Both seats are covered in two-toned bull calfskin, and the panel separating the cockpit from the central rear engine – traditionally made of carbon fiber – is covered in the same fine leather. The leather-lined trunk holds a specially-fitted “Toile H” and leather case, hand-made by craftsmen from the Hermès workshops. This exceptional model – in toning colors of ebony and étoupe, or ebony and brick – is priced at 1.55 million euros (not including tax), available at the end of 2008.

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance once again lived up to its credo – the most innovative annual automotive event. The three-day event, held March 7 – 9 on beautiful Amelia Island, Florida, offered some-thing for every enthusiast and a tremendous acknowledgement of a number of historic milestones. Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance honored the 100th anniversary of the Ford Model T with a wonderful display of this iconic automobile. A crowd favorite was the Model T popcorn wagon, on loan from the Saratoga (New York) Automobile Museum; museum staff offered fresh, hot popcorn in specially-created bags with the image of the Model T. General Motors was also honored with a parade of significant

vehicles from its 100 years, including a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado, the first GM front-wheel-drive car. Over 300 cars were entered in the judged show, many from pri-vate, seldom-seen collections. year after the unveiling of the GranTurismo, Mase-rati returned to the Geneva International Motor Show with yet another world premiere, the 2008 GranTurismo S. The ultimate expression of the

Trident coupe’s sportiness shifts the emphasis onto perfor-mance and driving enjoyment. Two main novelties are at the heart of the new Maserati: the 440 HP V8 4.7 engine and the electro-actuated gearbox with fast MC-Shift arranged in the Transaxle layout typical of high-performance sports cars that represents the technologi-cal DNA of all Maseratis. The GranTurismo S makes use of the high-performance brake system developed in collaboration with Brembo and introduced for the first time in the automotive field on the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S. The system features front

brake discs made with dual-cast technology - a dual casting of cast iron and aluminum, paired with aluminum mono-bloc 6-piston brake calipers, ensuring optimized braking perfor-mance. On the exterior the Maserati GranTurismo S is charac-terised by a number of aesthetic modifications that, although discrete, are highly effective and make the car body appear sportier without abandoning the sleekness of the lines mas-terfully designed by Pininfarina. The interior upholstered in Poltrona Frau leather and Al-cantara reflects the sporty flair of the Maserati GranTurismo S; the figure-hugging front and rear seats are distinguished by their new dynamic design with horizontal piping on the seats and seatbacks.

GEAR & GADGETS

Pagani has added its name to the list of luxury automakers branching out to produce other consumer products with its hi-fi home audio system. Built of carbon fiber and aluminum, the design of the system’s main control unit takes after the sound system in its supercars. Inspired by the unique four-pipe exhaust system on the Zonda, the bass tubes lie at the bottom of twin 350 watt tower speakers situated aside the control unit and amplifier.

The complete Hi-Fi stereo system is composed of an analog turntable for LP for 33rpm and 45rpm, CD player with D/A converter, stereo preamplifier, power amplifier, floor standing loudspeakers, and cables (segnal, loudspeaker and power). It is completely handmade in Italy and is designed to produce optimal sound for rooms ranging from 12 sqaure meters to 40-50 square meters. Additional power amplifiers and loudspeakers available by request to Pagani Automobili. www.paganiautomobili.it

tarting out in his garage in 1967 with the money he won as a semiprofessional bowler, Arlen bought his first Harley. Armed

with no more than a spray gun and a dream, Arlen stripped down his old Knucklehead and gave it a paint job of his own creation. After many an

appraising eye set sight on his work, Arlen entered it in a custom show. First show, first place! Then he was off. With nights spent in the garage working on a growing list of cus-tomers’ bikes, it wasn’t long before he rented his first store on East 14th St. in San Leandro California . By this time, Arlen’s son Cory had become a well-respected bike builder himself, designing his first bike in his mid-teens. The two of them have since become the leaders in custom bike building. Their unique flair for design was noticed by Victory Motorcycles, who was so impressed that they invited Ar-len and Cory to join the Victory motorcycle design team. With four decades of innova-tion and originality, Arlen and Cory present NESS MOTORCYCLES, LLC, the first com-pletely custom production motorcycle that is compatible with many products in the NESS Custom Product Line. Their refusal to imitate others, their sense of style, and their willing-ness to take risks, is still seen today in their product and their slogan: “Always Innovate, Never Imitate.”

Eternal Exploration. The KonTiki Diver

Eterna has redefined the functional requirements of a diving watch from the bottom up. The result is the KonTiki Diver, with its innovative hinged mechanism. The movement is housed in a case which can be raised and lowered. When the case is raised, the diving time is set using a bezel which can be rotated in either direction. With the case in the lowered position, the bezel is protected against accidental movements, and the displayof the correct diving time is guaranteed. Both the time andthe power reserve are clearly legible from the well-structured dial. With its revolutionary sealing system, the KonTiki Diver dispenses with a screw-in crown, and is water-resistant to 1000 metres. A new class of diving watch.
