President’s Message

Hi everyone

Another year…come and gone! The Tracking Club had some successful tests with passes and you have read about some of them in past news letters or will see them here. Enjoy and con-grats to all who passed!

We had a nominating committee, thank you Tommy Caisango and Jane Craig appointed in November. The current Officers and Board at large has conceded to remain in office so I thank you all. Remember anyone who wishes may still run if they are at the March meeting or someone can nominate them if they have a written letter from that person. Just sayin!

We will have a few things going on to raise some money for the Treasury. A raffle is being held to raffle off a beautiful embroi-dered tracking gear bag made by Rachel Richard and donated by Marjorie Butcher. There is still time to buy tickets, so please see the flyer in this newsletter and it is also on our website. www.tcocf.net

Thank you to those who have already made ticket purchases, some of you have been most generous!

There will be a VST Workshop fun day to be held at Lee Vista on April 7, 2019 and a flyer will be made for it shortly. It will be limited to 12 working spots and to have a working spot you must have a TD, TDU or certified dog to handle at the work-shop. There will be audit spots as well if you wish to come and observe and learn about VST and your dog is just not quite ready yet.

January 19/20 2019 is the TDX held at Colt Creek Park with Fran Smith and Susan Boyd judging. If you can help get in touch with Paul Reep he is the test secretary. [email protected]

February 9/10, 2019 will be a TDU/VST held at Lee Vista with Ron and myself judging. Carroll Dyer is test secretary. [email protected] is her email.

March 16/17, 2019 is the TD being judged by Robin Scott and Dianne Tharp held at Lee Vista and the semi- annual meeting with elections as well. Hope to see you all there. In the meantime, I wish you a happy New Year filled with much love, health, happiness and good dog times whatever your chosen venue is.

Mazie led us to her VST and Champion Tracker titles in the fall of 2017 when she was 5 years old. It was truly an amazing moment and so very confirming of all the hard work and miles we had put in during our training together--she has taught me so much along the way. We continued tracking regularly through 2018 because we both love it— and with the outside hope of possibly making it to the AKC National Tracking Invitational (NTI) held this year on October 6-7th at the Bernheim Arbore-tum in Kentucky.

We received our invitation on August 1st. So many AKC Champion Trackers had sent in their entries, and it was exciting when in early September, I found out that we had indeed made the draw!! Mazie was the LAST dog pulled, and I was over-whelmed, thrilled, and humbled. Only 12 dogs in North Amer-ica would be at the exhibition, and we had some work to do! We immediately stopped our Scent Work training (air scenting) and focused solely on Tracking (ground scenting). For the next month, Mazie and I fine-tuned some skills and revisited some obstacle work. The NTI runs are a hybrid of VST/TDX tracks.

It was great after the 15 hour trip to the NTI to meet up with the Florida contingent who were there to volunteer with others to help make this wonderful event happen. Jane Craig, Fran Smith (and her sister, Margi Lehnertz), Dianne Tharp, as well as Lisa Beever were there as tracklayers (most of the tracklayers at the NTI were judges in their own states). There were many breeds of dogs who attended from across North America – from Cali-fornia, Canada, and even a dog from Alaska! Six dogs ran each of the two days with a set of two judges serving each day. Being drawn last, we would be running in the Sunday group.

During the NTI, the weather in Kentucky was atrociously hot for the season (in the mid to upper 80’s and with very high humidity). Understandably, this was extremely tough for many dogs. However, it was a joyous celebration at the event, with the AKC group and the host clubs giving great encouragement to all. There was a terrific banquet one night with beautiful presen-tations and ribbons for each team. Every handler and dog were not only lovely to meet but also amazing to watch work on the

gorgeous grounds.

Finally Sunday ar-rived, and it was a little nerve wracking—but what a gift, as I drew track #2, and Lisa Beever turned out to be our wonderful tracklayer! Our track started in a busy loca-tion at the site in front of the Educational and Gift Shop buildings. It had lots of uninten-tional cross tracks with visitors and dog walkers, as well as paths to cross of various non-veg and veg materials, woods, hills, and two roads to navigate. We even had a picnic table with people sitting right near our start! AKC TV was there the whole week-end filming a production of the NTI and following and record-ing the teams all along their runs. That was slightly intimidating (along with the large gallery), and honestly I was just praying in the moment for the black dog to please start well!

Mazie certainly showed up that day. She was motivated with a “shot gun” start and just pulled hard and tracked beautifully the whole way. It was such fun to see her doing what she has shown me she can do so well. She moved confidently and quickly in the footstep and found both her intermediate articles with no problem. We had a little assistance on the second to last turn, and she continued on to nail her last turn and ran to the glove! The judges were so complimentary, and I was very proud of my Mazie. The AKC film crew did an interview with us later in the day. I came away from the NTI with new friends, and I felt very grateful and happy--and also truly thankful for all who have encouraged us along our way.

It was a real honor for us to be able to track at the NTI, and what an incredible experience and journey it has ALL been with Mazie—just blessings and hard work with my good “black dog”.

Tracking behind Skye is like being led on a wild ride! We started training right when he was about 10 weeks old and, since I’ve

never trained a dog that young, I relied heavily on Ron Seeley’s puppy training articles and the advice of so many around me. It turns out that Skye LOVES the sport and took to it with ease. We went from straight lines to turns while he was still wearing his baby harness!

At 10 months old he certified! Exciting, but it put me in a bit of a dilemma. Skye’s talent had exceeded my tracking abilities. In the past I have had dogs that allow me to follow slowly enough where I can think about the rules, terrain and obstacles, but Skye moves very fast and without looking to me for input. I quickly knew that one of us needed to change and it clearly was me.

We spent the summer training TDX … single flag starts, un-marked tracks, obstacles, articles, pavement and distractions. During those sweltering months, we grew as a team and, for the first time ever, I trusted my dog. I followed without calculat-ing, looking around or guessing. I followed without asking for guidance or trying to lead my dog. As I followed, Skye gained confidence and we became a team.

On November 4, 2018 we passed our TD test! An amazing ac-complishment, but an accomplishment made even more special by the fact that Judge Robin Scott, Judge Jane Craig and Track-layer Ron Seeley are people who are all very close to my heart

and have been with me on a journey that be-gan long before Skye. The day was not without my analytical gymnastics. I pulled track 5 and had hours to contemplate the effect of the delay and whether the heat would become problematic. The difference on that day was that when it was our turn and I hooked the lead to Skye’s harness, we transformed into that magical team we’d grown into. We traveled effortlessly along the bumpy terrain and I followed Skye, without question, right to the glove!

I present to you … Debonair JJ Celebrates Freedom TD

Thank you, my tracking family, for everything!!

Dog TreatsThese will get any dog’s attention and yet won’t offend those sensitive human noses. Easy to make and last for at least two months.

Vegetable oil

2 (6-ounce) cans tuna in water or 1 can (15 to 15 ounce) salmon, undrained

2 large eggs

1 to 1 ½ cups rice flour or unbleached all-purpose flour

1 Tablespoon garlic powder

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8-inch square cake pan.

Place the tuna or salmon, including the water, in a bowl and mash with a fork until the clumps are out. Transfer to a blender or food processor and process until liquefied. Add the eggs and extra water, a little at a time, if needed to liquefy completely. Pour into a mixing bowl, add the flour and garlic powder, and mix until it has the consistency of cake mix. Spread into the prepared pan and sprinkle with lots of Parmesan cheese. Bake until the edges pull away and the texture is like putty, about 15 minutes. Turn out of pan and let cool. Use a pizza cutter and cut into teeny squares. These freeze beautifully.
