STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 2013-2016

• In the future LUAS will be an internationally recognized and networked, multidisciplinary and regionally influential higher education institution

• LUAS’s main task is to train experts and real professionals for different sectors of working world with a proactive and productive approach, and to help in regenerating the region's competence base with RDI activities.

• According to the current FUAS strategy (2012-2015), the FUAS institutions will provide all services in UAS-level education, research and regional development required in the wider metropolitan area, using learning environments which foster internationalisation.

Mission• The mission of Lahti University of Applied

Sciences is to educate experts and real professionals for different sectors with a proactive and productive approach, and help to regenerate the region's competence base.

Profiles• Our profiles are integrated pedagogy,

practise-based innovation, and student entrepreneurship.

Focus areas• Design, environment, and the development of

welfare services according to the Lahti region strategy for competitiveness and economy.

• Focus areasThe focus areas identified for Lahti University of Applied Sciences are: design, environment, and the development of welfare services.

• The responsibilities for the strategic focus areas of the FUAS alliance are allocated between its members as follows: LUAS has the lead responsibility for the development of the Environment and Energy Efficiency focus area, HAMK is responsible for Technological Competence and Entrepreneurship, and Laurea is responsible for Societal Security and Integrity. The Social Welfare focus area is developed jointly by the three members.

• ProfilesThe profiles of LUAS are focused on integrated pedagogy, practice-based innovation and student entrepreneurship.

• The educational profile of FUAS describes it as an international pioneer in workplace-oriented pedagogical solutions integrated into RDI, and a motor for applied research, pragmatic innovation and RDI integrated into student-oriented education in the wider metropolitan area.

• New products, spaces, services, experiences and systems are developed through design thinking, in cooperation with users and businesses.

• At LUAS, design thinking is human-focused, interactive, experimental, iterative and optimistic.

• Design and visual communication are seen as art and humanities based approach to designing, developing and researching better future for us all.

• Our design and visual communication are founded on positive, critical and regenerative thinking.

• A good example of a cross-disciplinary competence area is service design, which introduces design thinking into service development in different fields.

Focus areas ENVIRONMENT

• Lahti region aims to become the leading cleantech cluster for environmental research, education and business.

 • By 2017, Lahti University of Applied Sciences will be a nationally and

internationally recognised educator, developer and research organisation in environmental technology and cleantech competence.

• LUAS together with its partners generate a new way of thinking and new solutions and applications for global challenges.

 • LUAS operates in accordance with the principles of sustainable development,

and the principles of social, ecological and economic sustainability are incorporated into all its operations.

• In the Europe 2020 Strategy, innovation partnerships are identified as key methods for solving societal challenges.

• LUAS is focused on the welfare of the aged and families, the prevention of exclusion, the service and management system reform, the production of e-welfare services, and the promotion of service entrepreneurship.

• Lahti region is a mega-province in sports, and exercise as a health-promoting activity is highlighted in the region's strategy for competitiveness and the economy.

• A joint objective is to turn the Lahti region into a centre of excellence for research, competence, education and business in health-promoting exercise.

• Integrated pedagogy refers to the way different types of knowledge are combined to develop expertise by linking theoretical knowledge to experiences and action to thinking.

• Key aspects of learning and competence are professional expertise, the development of

expertise, guidance, and competence evaluation.

• Learning is collaborative; students, staff members and workplace partners all learn together.

• Teachers are enablers of students' learning and growth, they construct pedagogically appropriate learning environments with a workplace-oriented approach.

• RDI activity is a key arena for learning, learning environments are both national and international.
