NEXT REGULAR MEETING

The next meeting of the Lower Cape Fear Coin Club will be on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Carolina BBQ Restaurant, 1602 South College Road beginning at 6 pm. The program will be on Kennedy half-dollars by Jim Savage.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Hello once again! Our 2015 Azalea Coin Show has concluded. Per most of the people involved in the show, it was an unqualified success. Most of the dealers I talked to were pleased with our new location at the Elks Lodge. Foot traffic throughout the show was heavier than previous shows. An increase in attendance helped the dealers considerably. On the negative side, the lighting on the exhibit floor was not bright enough. This made it somewhat harder for collectors to view the dealer’s coins. The Elks let us down regarding the lighting. It was mentioned before the show that brighter lighting was going to be installed, but it was not.

Ray Flanagan did a great job with the exhibits. Everything looked first rate. Bob Neale, O.T. Thompson, Jim Savage, Franklin Fussell, and

of course Ray put out informative displays. Thanks guys, it was a great addition to the show!

Karen Foster and Ray Flanigan did a wonderful job getting the word out about the show. I saw a number of articles in the Star News pertaining to our event. Their efforts helped immensely with us getting good attendance.

Kid’s Corner was a huge success with over 200 kids attending!!! I was able to help out some in this corner and everyone involved was having a great time. Karen Foster, her daughter ‘Kat’ along with Jim Savage, worked tirelessly at the kid’s station the entire show. Every child who walked away from kid’s corner was very happy. We may be mentoring future collectors! I also want to mention, that many of the dealers at the show donated coins to be given away to the kids as prizes. I do not know who the specific dealers were, but I wish to thank them. The Azalea Belles, the Civil War Round Table and the Gold Pan Event, all added to the positive experience of our show. I personally wish to thank all who helped with this event. Getting the tables set up, putting up signage, coffee, donuts, manning the front desk, managing the raffle and door prizes, and even the help we got from non- members of our club, was much appreciated. Thank you all!

Now, it’s back to business. Possible changes to the constitution and bylaws, getting our web site up to date, membership drive, and getting our budget balanced are a few of the things we need

to address going forward. We have some work to do, but we will certainly have some fun along the way.

LAST MEETING

The last meeting of our Club was attended by twenty-five members and guests. Bob Neale and Ray Flanigan led a VERY informative discussion on the subject of GRADING. More emphasis will be placed on this subject in future meetings.

Attendance Prize was won by Mike McKinnon.

The 50/50 drawing was won by Chris Vandall, who seems to be winning everything lately.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

This month’s question was submitted by David Quante of the Myrtle Beach Coin Club.

‘WHY is the amount of silver in a silver dollar (.773 ounces troy) different than the amount of silver contained in four quarters, two half-dollars or ten dimes (.723 ounces troy)? The amount of gold in all our GOLD coinage is EXACTLY proportional. The amount of gold in four 5 dollar gold pieces equals the amount of gold in one 20 dollar gold piece. The amount of silver in all of Canada’s coinage is EXACTLY proportional. Four quarters, ten dimes or two half-dollars equals a silver dollar (.600 ounces troy). Why are Morgan and/or Peace dollars different?

The April 22 BM was held at McAlister’s Deli on South College Road. Among the many subjects discussed: Our recent Coin Show, the C&BL revisions, increasing membership and our website. Tom Bromley was volunteered to move forward on our website re-design and Jim Savage became our newest life member.

The next Board meeting will be held on May 27, 2015 at Carolina BBQ, 1602 S. College Rd. All members may attend to voice their opinions. If you want to help on committees, let someone know. Come early to eat. All meetings begin at 6:00 pm.

MEMBER NEWS

Karen Foster’s husband Rob went home from the hospital the last week of March. He’ll continue rehab for a while.

Karen Foster and Jim Savage presented participants in the Annual Azalea Festival Children’s Arts Show with a specially made souvenir card and medal for their hard work. Wilmington’s Mayor, Festival dignitaries and the famous Azalea Belles also attended the event at the Community Arts Building.

OUR APRIL 2015 AZALEA COIN SHOW

Our Azalea Festival Coin Show was, in a word, WOW! Co-Bourse Chairmen Charles Campbell and O. T. Thompson did a great job organizing the Show by making sure the dealers were located almost where they wanted to be and had what they needed. For the very first time in

decades, all Club members and dealers had an opportunity to wear nametags and every dealer had a professionally prepared sign. A new security company served us well and NO problems were reported. A full house of dealers was ready for a little rain to ‘push’ Festival visitors inside to view excellent exhibits and numismatic treasures. Traffic was continuous BOTH days with a record number of visitors. Show Chairman Mike McKinnon kept everyone on an even keel the whole weekend. Friday evening set-up was a ‘first’ for us and fully half of the dealers took advantage. It will be difficult to improve on this Show BUT we’re going to try anyway.

A special ‘Thank You’ goes out to member Bob Doleman for the majority of these photos. He always has his camera with him and catches many interesting activities on film.

Chris VanDall did his usual superb job as Raffle Chairman accounting for the tickets sold and lining up members to ‘man’ the door. Many members helped out Friday afternoon setting up the tables, hooking up the wiring and other basic chores necessary to ensure a smooth Saturday opening.

THE Civil War Roundtable representative, Bob Cooke, had an impressive display of Civil War memorabilia and information at our entrance. This display generated much interest and accented our theme this year…’The 150th

Anniversary of the End of The Civil War’. Bob had so much fun that he ended up applying for membership in our Club. If any of you are interested in joining this organization call O. T at 910-520-8405 for more information.

The Charlotte Gold Mining Company showed us how to pan for gold. One person found a pea-sized gold nugget and another found seven flakes of gold!

Many LCFCC members displayed some of their favorite numismatic items including currency, coins and even rare Civil War relics. Our exhibit area was the largest in recent memory!

U. S. MINT NEWS

On May 5 a very special ten-cent set will be issued. It will be the first ever reverse proof silver ten-cent piece EVER made by the Mint. A limited edition of 75,000 sets will be sold and an early sell-out as expected. The cost of each set is $61.95.

NCNA NEWS

Perhaps a ‘project’ for the NCNA (Or any other regional or national numismatic organization or publisher.) to think about could be a small three-chapter booklet titled A GUIDEBOOK FOR HOBBY CLUB MANAGERS. This would be applicable to ALL hobbies and not necessarily just numismatics.

The first chapter could be on ‘How to Organize or Start a Club in Your Area’. The second chapter could be titled, ‘How to Run a Club Meeting’. The third chapter could be on, ‘How to Organize a Successful Club Show’. Surely other chapters would come to mind during the brainstorming part of this project?

Anyone who has been in any hobby long enough has a few ideas which could be shared and incorporated in this endeavor…all that’s needed is someone to head this up, ask for input and get it printed.
