• When the twentieth century started, there were 18,684 inhabitants but since this moment the number of inhabitants started to decrease. Now in Llanes there are 13,232 inhabitants and most of them live in the coastal zone

• An important problem today is that in Llanes there aren’t a lot of young people, old people represent the 30% of the total population.

• But when the summer arrives the number of inhabitants increases because of the great number of tourists that visit Llanes.

Natural monuments• The beautiful beaches and the “bufones” are the most important

natural monuments in Llanes. The most important beaches and “bufones” in the district of Llanes are:

• Borizo beach.• Gulpiyuri beach• Cuevas del Mar beach. • Barro beach.• Toranda beach.• The Bufones of Santiuste, these are on the eastern part of Llanes,

on the coastline.• The Bufones of Arenillas. These are situated next to the village of

Vidiago, between the rivers Purón and Novales.

Important monumentsThe most important monuments in Llanes are:

• Los cubos de la memoria. They were created by Agustín Ibarrola. They are situated in the port of Llanes. They are big blocks of cement painted of different ways.

• El paseo de San Pedro. Situated over the El Sablón beach, it is a long walkway built in 1847 . From here you can see a fantastic panorama of Llanes and the Sierra del Cuera

Important buildingsThe most important buildings in Llanes are:

• The casino: It was made in the XlX century by Juan Álvarez Mendoza. It is situated in the centre of Llanes. It is famous because in the past it was an Indianos house.

• Indianos houses: In the past the people from Llanes immigrated to South America and there they made a lot of money and when they came back they built big houses.

• The town hall is an important building too.

Celebrations In Llanes there are some typical festivals like:

La Magdalena: it is celebrated in July. In this festival people dance El pericote.

Other festival is San Roque: it is celebrated in August and it starts with a procession and finishes with some typical dances.

Another festival celebrated in Llanes in August is Nuestra Señora de Andrín, popular because some people wear typical clothes called trajes de llanisca.

La Virgen de la Guía is one of the most popular festivals in Llanes. It is celebrated in September. If you go to this festival you can see a night procession and the day after you can attend mass.

Typical foods

In Llanes you can find different dishes but the most poupulars are:

•FABADA ASTURIANA

Ingredients: It is made with sausage blood, rump steak, bacon, white beans and salt

•PITU CALEYA

Ingredients: It is made with chicken, onions,carrots, leeks, brandy, garlic, red pepper, white wine, oil and if you want salt

•TORTOS

Ingredients: corn flour, flour, hot water with salt and ½ of milk.

Mountains All the south part of Llanes has got limestone mountains. A lot of

tourists don’t know that the wall of limestone mountains cover the view of Sierra del Cuera and the highest point in Llanes: Peña Blanca, it is 1177 meters.

Between the two ridges there are some valleys .The largest of these valleys is La Llosa de Viango. The only different between these valleys and Picos de Europa valleys is that these valleys are green and pastoral
