A Good Laugh

An old man went to the Doctor complaining that his wife could barely hear. The Doctor suggested a test to find out the extent of the problem. “Stand far behind her and ask her a question, then slowly move up and see how far away you are when she first responds.” The old man ,excited to finally be working on a solution for the problem, runs home and sees his wife preparing supper. “Honey,” the man asks standing about 20 feet away “what’s for supper?” After receiving no response he tried again 15 feet away, and again, no response. Then again at 10 feet away and again, no response. Finally when he was 5 feet way “ he asked, “Honey, what’s for supper?” She replies ‘For the fourth time, it’s lasagna!”

There seems to be a

relationship between

obesity and obstruc-

tive sleep apnea.

Evidence shows that

sleep deprivation

slows your metabo-

lism, which can, in

dramatic cases, slow

to the point where

you can’t lose weight.

When someone is di-

agnosed with sleep

apnea and they start

using a CPAP

machine at night,

they will improve

their sleep. While a

CPAP machine is not

weight loss equip-

ment, many people do

Sleep Apnea and Weight Loss

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is an involuntary cessation of breathing that occurs while

the patient is asleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing

during their sleep sometimes hundreds of times in one night.

What is a CPAP Machine?

CPAP is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine that blows

air in to your airways to keep them open at night while you sleep.

chine because sleeping

better causes metabo-

lism functions im-

prove. It also can

break a vicious cycle

where sleeping poorly

causes less motivation

to do physical activity

thus making people

more likely to gain

weight.

Most people are una-

ware that they have

sleep apnea, but there

are a few easy ways to

see if you should get

checked. According to

Dr. Frankie Roman

from JD Doctor’s Hos-

pital, “if your neck cir-

cumference is 17 inch-

es or more for men or

16 inches or more for

women then there’s a

good possibility you

have obstructive sleep

apnea.” On the next

page you will find the

Epworth Sleepiness

Scale. It’s a self test

you can take to see if

you have symptoms of

sleep apnea. If you

suspect you may be

suffering from sleep

apnea, you should seek

medical attention.

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale

P A G E 1 5

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in contrast to feeling just tired?

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale below helps to measure if you may have a

problem that may require medical attention.

Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate number for each sit-

uation. Write down the number corresponding to your choice in the right

hand column. Total your score at the bottom.

0= No Chance Of Dozing

1= Slight Chance Of Dozing

2= Moderate Chance Of Dozing

3= High Chance Of Dozing

Sitting inactive in a public place (e.g. theater)

As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break

Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit

Sitting and talking to someone

Sitting quietly after lunch without alcohol

In a car, while stopped for a few minutes in traffic

TOTAL SCORE:

Analyze Your Score: 0-7: It is unlikely that you are abnormally sleepy.

8-9: You have an average amount of daytime sleepiness.

10-15: You may be excessively sleepy depending on the situation. You may

want to consider seeking medical attention.

16-24: You are excessively sleepy. It is advised to seek medical attention.

In order to more efficiently follow Medicare

guidelines requiring us to verify shipments prior to

sending, we are now using an Automated Call

System to ensure you are ready to receive your

quarterly testing supplies when they are due.

Automated Call System

HOW IT WORKS:

System will call your primary phone number between 2PM and

3PM EST daily starting 14 days prior to your next shipment.

If you answer the call, you will be prompted to answer questions

using your telephone keypad. (It does NOT respond to voice

commands)

If you have a voicemail, the system will leave a message with two

questions. “Will you be within two weeks of your supplies running

out by your next ship date?” and “Is your shipping address and

doctors information the same since your last shipment?” If your

answer is YES to BOTH of the questions, you do NOT need to

return the call and your supplies will be shipped as scheduled. If

your answer is NO to either question, then you will need to call

ASM at 855-362-3344.

For your convenience, you can also answer the

questions online at our website at

www.AllStatesMedical.com. On the home page

you will find the link to re-order your supplies

anytime within 14 days of your next shipment.

***PLEASE NOTE. Some caller IDs do not recognize our phone number and may say “Unknown Number.” These calls are, in fact, from ASM even though the ID does not say so.
