Valuing Your Business –Income Multiple Models

As we continue the succes-sion planning series, let’sexplore another method forvaluing your business,Income Multiple Models.

First, a word of caution. Toooften we see assumptionsand shortcuts made in thename of this method. Justbecause another businesswith 200 clients sells for

$400,000 does not meanyour business is worth$2,000 per client. Similarly, another business with annu-al revenues of $100,000 sell-ing for $150,000 does notmean your business is worth1.5 times annual revenue. There are too many factorsat play that these assump-tions do not account for.

For small businesses, a bet-ter option is using anincome multiple modelbased on Seller’sDiscretionary Earnings(SDE). SDE is equal to abusiness’s Earnings BeforeInterest, Taxes, Depreciationand Amortization (EBITDA)plus any compensation theowner receives from thebusiness. Take the business’snet income from a taxreturn and add non-cashexpenses (interest, deprecia-tion and amortization), theowner’s salary and any perksor benefits the owner

receives. These may includepersonal use of a businessvehicle, cell phone, insur-ance, retirement, travel, memberships and entertain-ment.

SDE multiples vary depend-ing on the business size andtype. A fellow SBDC con-sultant recently ran a reportwith data from over 10,000actual business sales. Themedian sale was 1.9 timesSDE while the mean salewas 2.5 times SDE. You canwork with acertified/accredited businessvaluation expert to deter-mine a reasonable SDE mul-tiple for valuing your smallbusiness.

Current budgetary projections require the Army to analyze the reduction of active component endstrength from a wartime high of 570,000 soldiers to 420,000 soldiers. As such the Army is analyz-ing the potential environmental and socioeconomic impact of end strength reductions of 1,000 ormore soldiers and/or Army civilians at 30 installations, one of which is Fort Riley.

The Army has completed what is called a Supplemental Programmatic Environmental Assessment(SPEA) and is making a draft finding of no significant environmental impacts resulting from the pro-jected end strength reductions. They do expect, however, socioeconomic impacts at most installa-tions.

The SPEA notice was published in the Federal Register on June 26, 2014(https://federalregister.gov/a/2014-14733). There will be a 60-day public comment period ending onAugust 25, 2014. Additionally the Army intends to conduct community listening sessions to receivepublic input before making final force stationing decisions.Updates on the SPEA process and the opportunity for public input will be communicated in theChamber’s weekly electronic newsletter and posted on the Manhattan Area Chamber ofCommerce website (www.manhattan.org).
